AbstractWe delineate the four principal surface plasmon polariton coupling and interaction mechanisms in subwavelength gratings, and demonstrate their significant roles in shaping the optical response of plasmonic gratings. Within the framework of width-graded metal–insulator-metal nano-gratings, electromagnetic field confinement and wave guiding result in multiwavelength light localization provided conditions of adiabatic mode transformation are satisfied. The field is enhanced further through fine tuning of the groove-width (w), groove-depth (L) and groove-to-groove-separation (d). By juxtaposing the resonance modes of width-graded and non-graded gratings and defining the adiabaticity condition, we demonstrate the criticality of w and d in achieving adiabatic mode transformation among the grooves. We observe that the resonant wavelength of a graded grating corresponds to the properties of a single groove when the grooves are adiabatically coupled. We show that L plays an important function in defining the span of localized wavelengths. Specifically, we show that multiwavelength resonant modes with intensity enhancement exceeding three orders of magnitude are possible with w < 30 nm and 300 nm < d < 900 nm for a range of fixed values of L. This study presents a novel paradigm of deep-subwavelength adiabatically-coupled width-graded gratings—illustrating its versatility in design, hence its viability for applications ranging from surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy to multispectral imaging.

Fuzzy control charts are proposed to solve the problem that traditional control charts cannot be applied to fuzzy quality characteristics. First, fuzzy quality characteristics are converted to representative statistics, which are fuzzy mode transformation, fuzzy level midrange transformation and fuzzy level median transformation. Control charts are designed based on the Poisson distribution. Second, the effects of the different statistics are analysed. Direct Fuzzy Control Charts are designed to avoid some information omission when translating fuzzy quality characteristics into representative statistics. The area ratio that falls within the control limits is used to conclude whether the process is relative out of control or in control. The performance of the control charts is analysed by MATLAB simulation. Finally, an example of an energy metre assembly is given to prove the proposed method.

A review on the rotating stall in the vaneless diffuser of centrifugal compressors is presented showing that different stall modes characterized by different numbers of cells can be detected within the diffuser even if the operating condition remains unchanged. The interaction between the inlet perturbation and the stall cells near the diffuser outlet is supposed to be the trigger of the stall mode transformation. In order to determine if the inlet perturbation will interact with the downstream stall cells, a characteristic time analysis is proposed to estimate the characteristic time of the perturbation in radial and tangential directions. An additional theoretical model which focused on the development of the vaneless diffuser rotating stall is presented to determine the propagation velocity of the cells. The comparison between the characteristic time in two directions shows that one stall mode is able to evolve into another stall mode if a critical condition is met, and the stall mode transformation is more likely to start from a mode with a higher number of cells and is more likely to occur in the diffuser with a large radius ratio. Experimental results are also employed to validate the proposed critical condition, and good agreements are obtained.
