Human Representation on Environmental Speech in Terms or Transitivity Process

The role of activists in raising humankind’s awareness regarding environmental or ecological issues or phenomenon has gained so much attention since it is spread and told in many different ways. One of them is taken by sharing the idea through speech and statements that are being spoken before the world leaders, politicians, and any other occasions. This study focuses on the speech of an environmental activist regarding climate change, Greta Thunberg. The analysis was conducted on the transitivity analysis, i.e. the distribution of experiential meaning on the speech that was presented at the United Nations Conference of the Parties on Climate Change, 2018. The result shows: 1) the distribution of material process is the dominant one (41,8%), followed by relational process (19,4%), mental process (17,9%), verbal process (14,9%), behavioral process (3%), and existential process (3%); 2) through the process distribution, human beings seem to have their big roles in causing the climate change, but at the same time they are the ones who can prevent it. Therefore, the speech is regarded as beneficial discourse based on Stibbe’s ecolinguistics standard. This type of discourse has to be promoted in order to raise ecological awareness in society.

The Commentary of City Promotional Films Based on Transitivity Theory: A Case Study of Xi’an and San Francisco

Based on Halliday’s theory of ideational function, this paper selects the commentary of city promotional films of Xi’an and San Francisco and analyzes them from the perspective of the transitivity system. The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the language skills of the two commentaries and to provide ideas and methods for the audience to understand such explanatory texts. This paper focuses on the following two questions: 1) How do the six processes of the transitivity system distribute in the two commentaries? 2) What are the specific functions of the six processes in the two commentaries? The results show that 1) there are two kinds of processes frequently used in explanatory texts, namely material process and relational process; 2) the frequency of mental, verbal and existential processes is relatively low; 3) behavioral process has no occurrence. The reason may be that although the textual structure and description focus of the two commentaries are different, they both belong to the applied style of oral explanation, so that they share the same social functions of shaping the city image, highlighting the city connotation and managing the city brand.

Temporal Brokering: A Measure of Brokerage as a Behavioral Process

Extant research in organizational networks has provided critical insights into understanding the benefits of occupying a brokerage position. More recently, researchers have moved beyond the brokerage position to consider the brokering processes (arbitration and collaboration) brokers engage in and their implications for performance. However, brokering processes are typically measured using scales that reflect individuals’ orientation toward engaging in a behavior, rather than the behavior itself. In this article, we propose a measure that captures the behavioral process of brokering. The measure indicates the extent to which actors engage in arbitration versus collaboration based on sequences of time stamped relational events, such as emails, message boards, and recordings of meetings. We demonstrate the validity of our measure as well as its predictive ability. By leveraging the temporal information inherent in sequences of relational events, our behavioral measure of brokering creates opportunities for researchers to explore the dynamics of brokerage and their impact on individuals, and also paves the way for a systematic examination of the temporal dynamics of networks.

Targeted Engagement of the Action Selection Network during Task-Oriented Arm Training after Stroke

Action selection (AS), or selection of an action from a set of alternatives, is an important movement preparation process that engages a frontal-parietal network. The addition of AS demands to arm training after stroke could be used to engage this motor planning process and the neural network that supports it. The purpose of this case series is to describe the feasibility and outcomes associated with task-oriented arm training aimed at engaging the AS behavioral process and the related neural network in three individuals with chronic stroke. Three participants with mild to moderate motor deficits completed 13 to 15 sessions of task-oriented arm training that included AS cues for each movement repetition; cues dictated movement direction, height, or distance. Before and after training, individuals completed an AS brain-behavior probe during functional MRI. AS behavioral performance improved after training (increased accuracy, decreased reaction time) in all participants while brain activation in the AS network (dorsal premotor, parietal, dorsolateral prefrontal cortices) decreased in two participants. Gains in motor function were also found in all three participants, especially on patient-reported measures of perceived difficulty and confidence to complete upper extremity functional tasks. It was feasible to target the AS behavioral process and the related neural network through the addition of AS demands to functional, task-oriented arm training in three individuals with mild to moderate motor dysfunction poststroke.

Re-domesticating social media when it becomes disruptive: Evidence from China’s “super app” WeChat

This article examines the emerging phenomenon of the non-use of WeChat Moments. Drawing upon semi-structured interviews with 21 users who used Moments for at least 6 months, then voluntarily discontinued their use of the feature, we discuss the complex dynamics of Moments use, exploring the implicit micro-behavioral process of social media practice. Countering the purported hyper-centrality of WeChat, we identified a periodic loop of “use, non-use, reuse” of Moments, suggesting that people suspend their use of Moments periodically to “re-domesticate” technology. Through the prism of the domestication approach, we argue that the re-domestication of Moments is a “reboot” of the whole process of domestication through four key stages: re-appropriation, re-objectification, re-incorporation, and re-conversion. Re-domestication is a process that allows people to take a retrospective look at their lives and transform Moments from a disruptive app feature into an instrumental apparatus conducive to their personal and professional well-being. By examining this process, we discuss how people use innovative ways to regain their autonomy and agency in their daily interactions with WeChat.

TRANSITIVITY IN THE TENTH GRADE STUDENTS’ RECOUNT TEXTS (A SYSTEMIC FUNCTIONAL GRAMMAR: SFG)

This research aims to analyze the use of transitivity in the tenth grade students’ recount text and to find out the types of processes that are mostly found in the text. The data are taken from five recount texts written by five groups of the tenth grade students in one of the senior high schools in Cimahi. The researchers used descriptive qualitative as the method of this research. From the whole data, the researchers found 69 clauses and those are divided into seven types of processes as stated by Halliday. After classifying them, the researchers only found six types of processes which are: material process found in 45 clauses (65.2%), mental process found in 11 clauses (16%), relational process found in 5 clauses (7.2%), existential process found in 4 clauses (5.8%), behavioral process found in 2 clauses (2.9%) and verbal process found in 2 clauses (2.9%). While meteorological process was not found in the data. The most commonly process found in the data was material process which consists of 45 clauses for the recount text was retelling something happened in the past which experienced by the students. Transivitas Teks Mantra Warok Aji Gebyagan Pada Paguyuban Reyog Ponorogo

Alip Sugianto, 2020, The Aji Gebyagan spell is a warok mantra as an introduction to the Gebyagan ritual. Spell data were analyzed using the transiveness of the Linguistic Functional Systemic approach. The aim of this research is to find out more deeply the meaning of the spell of aji gebyagan and to reveal the ideational meaning. The results obtained by verbal processes 33%, attributive relational processes 33%, relational identification processes 25% and behavioral processes 9%. The data shows that the dominance of attributive verbal and relational factors indicates that warok has a closeness in mental processing that is reflected in the spell to get the blessing of God. In addition, there is also a behavioral process as the goal of the spell of safety in the Reyog Ponorogo performance.
