Pesantren communication culture is quite distinct from other cultures, as it has its own unique, unique, and distinct culture. The santri's obedience, sincerity, and respect for the Kyai exemplify its uniqueness. The author attempts to raise this unique communication culture as a research theme by researching a salaf (traditional) Islamic boarding school, An-Nidzam Sukabumi, and a modern Islamic boarding school, Pondok Pesantren Kholaf (modern) Assalam Sukabumi. The research focuses on the unique characteristics of each of the two Islamic boarding schools. This study employs a qualitative approach based on ethnographic methods because it is highly relevant to its focus on the language spoken, communication patterns observed, and communication culture of pesantren. The findings indicated that the communication cultures of the salaf and Khalaf pesantren were significantly different. The An Nizam salaf pesantren placed a premium on regional/Sundanese languages in daily interactions while simultaneously suppressing learning in religious sciences from the yellow books. The Kalaf/modern Assalam Islamic boarding schools placed a premium on Arabic and English instruction. The use of English in daily interactions and an understanding of the spiritual sciences are explored through classically taught contemporary books.

This chapter examines the poorly documented centuries in the middle of the first millennium AD. It recovers economic structures and daily interactions from archaeological evidence, as well as from mainly later documents. The nature and impact of the Roman to Anglo-Saxon transition within the study area is considered, and demographic and agrarian trends are set out. The character of early royal involvement in the area is assessed, looking in particular at the evidence for a possible great hall complex at Benson. It is argued that princes and kings had a visible impact on the land and on landscape memorialization, but that the strongest driver of perceptions were the localized territorial farming units to which inhabitants belonged. In this period of poor crop storage facilities, hunger and the threat of starvation had a particularly acute impact on the way the landscape was experienced.

COVID-19 pandemic has had a big impact on both adults' and children's everyday lives. The conversations about biological processes such as virus, illness, health have started to occur more frequently in daily interactions. Although there are many guidelines for parents about how to talk to their children about coronavirus, only a few studies examine what children are actually curious about coronavirus and how they make sense of the changes in their everyday lives. This study addresses this need by examining children's questions and parents' responses about the Covid-19 Pandemic in Turkey. Using an online survey, we asked 183 parents of 3 to 12-year-olds to report their children's questions about coronavirus and their answers to these questions. We analyzed children's questions and parents' responses using several content categories (Menendez et al., 2020). The majority of children's questions were about the nature of the virus (34%), followed by lifestyle changes (20%). Older children were more likely to ask about school/work and less likely to ask about lifestyle changes than younger children. Parents responded to children's questions by providing realistic explanations (48%) and reassurance (20%). Only 18% of children's questions were explanation-seeking "why" and "how" questions. Parents were more likely to provide explanations if children's questions were explanation-seeking. Family activities such as playing games and cooking were the most common coping strategies reported by parents (69.2%). The findings have important implications for children's learning about coronavirus and how adults can support children's understanding and help them develop coping strategies during the Covid-19 pandemic.

AbstractIn our account of artistic identities among electronic music artists, we point to the notion of persona as a key element in a triadic framework for studying the dynamics of identity. Building on pragmatist theory, we further draw on Pizzorno’s concept of mask and Luhmann’s notion of second-order observation to highlight the dual properties of persona: whether like a mask that is put on or like a probe that is put out, persona is a part that stands apart. Persona is an object that alter can recognize and by which ego can be recognized; but what is recognized defies the person’s complete control. We thus conceptualize identity as a multi-sided relationship that involves person, persona, and others. Building on our ethnographic research among electronic music artists in Berlin and New York, we characterize this relationship in terms of attachment between artist and persona, between artist and audience, and between persona and audience. These attachments are variable and independent from one another. The resulting model is an analytic tool to examine identity as the ongoing outcome of the three-way dynamics of such shifting attachments. We are attentive to persona because the creation and curation of online profiles have become a pervasive element in many people’s daily interactions in both social and work situations.

One of the aspects that moulds a Muslim’s personality is to awaken the spiritual through the concept of tazkiyah al-nafs. This awakening of soul by self-purification is important in shaping one’s behavior in society. This realization is closely tied with two main relationships in life that is the relationship between one and the people around him (habl min alNas), and one’s relationship with his Creator (habl min Allah). Hence, in the development of Malay literature this situation can be observed in local Malay novels. It is evident that virtuous values as depicted by the author are portrayed through the development of the character’s in thiswork. Thus, this paper reveals the contention of tazkiyah al-nafs in Pasir Lintang written by S.M. Noor that highlighted through variety of stories how man tries to achieve good character (mahmudah) by avoiding heinous nature (mazmumah) in his daily interactions. The study clearly shows that tazkiyah al-nafs is expressed by the author through four maqamat in Islamic psychotherapy namely tawbah (repentance), sabr (patience), raja’ (hope) and khawf (fear) as a useful message for the readers in facing the challenges of life.

This study explores the use of multiple reactive tokens ( duis) in responsive turns in Mandarin, particularly in the sequential and interactional environments that project them in daily interactions. Data analysis of over 100 unscripted conversations between two or three native speakers indicate that an increase in the number of duis co-occurring corresponds to a higher level of listenership, resulting in a hierarchy of displayed stances ranging from neutral to active to affiliative. I argue that almost no practice of multiple duis in conversation is guaranteed to work mechanistically and automatically, as it requires at least a two-party collaboration. Multiple duis as reactive tokens in interaction are systematic, conversationally strategic, and sequentially as well as socially organized. Furthermore, they are recurrent patterns at the discourse level that must be recognized as routine practices in conversation, as their format can help accomplish unique interactional tasks that exhibit strong coherence and utility at the interactional level.

Embracing and embedding the rich cultural knowledge, languages, concepts and skills that Aboriginal families and children bring to playgroup is key to empowering families as their children’s first teachers and strengthening young children’s self-esteem, pride, confidence and identities. In this article, we share our story of how we have explored and upheld the strengths of Yolŋu identity, cultural knowledge and language in the Galiwin’ku Families as First Teachers (FaFT) playgroup early educational program. We highlight the ways we have supported mothers to embed gesture, sign language, Yolngu Matha language conventions, Yolŋu kinship, clan concepts and dance into their daily interactions with their children at FaFT. We reflect on what has empowered mothers to feel agentic in their children’s learning in these playgroups and to build strong Yolŋu identities in young children and argue that playgroup is a vital educational platform through which to deliver culturally meaningful early learning experiences for Aboriginal children prior to preschool.

Metaphors are ubiquitous features of spoken and written language that permit us to experience one thing in terms of another. “Seeing is believing” helps us understand the abstract concept of belief in terms of the concrete sense of sight. Derived from two Greek words that mean “to transfer,” metaphors transfer certain attributes from the source domain, in our example, Seeing to the target domain of Believing. The chapter explores how metaphors have cognitive properties and allow us to learn new things and to express abstract ideas and complex relations. Metaphors are a powerful trope of figurative language and commonly appear in both formal medical writings and the informal daily interactions of doctors, patients, and the public more generally. The chapter describes how metaphors connect abstract and concrete domains and offers an array of examples that helps us decipher how metaphors originate from human experiences and how they evolve. It explores how metaphors frame perceptions and shape reality and their potency in the language of the clinic.
