Bestselling organizational, behavioral, and academic authors such as Dan Pink, Peter Senge, John Medina, Clayton Christensen, and dozens more illustrate that despite research-based, proven actions regarding organizational, managerial, and strategic planning best practices as well as innovative thinking that is impactful or efficacious, organizations continue to employ behaviors that are dysfunctional, ineffective, and lead to poor outcomes. Some of these same authors amongst others point out that this is as true in higher education as any sector. But while other industries are primed for innovative solutioning to these issues, education employs systems and processes that prohibit transformation. Reaching Education 3.0, meaning to leverage the best learning practices through the confluence of neuroscience, research-based learning design, and educational technology, will require innovative strategies and practices. The question is whether colleges and universities can push through existing, dysfunctional infrastructure and move forward to help students learn, succeed, and thrive.

It will studies popular writers such as Derek Prince and Rebecca Brown and academic authors such as Charles Kraft and Ed Murphy to assess the accuracy of such views in comparison to the biblical data on curse to propose a more robust and sound theological, ministerial and misssiological understanding and praxis for how Christians may engage with curses.

Background and Objectives: We sought to assess and compare the publication rates of research presented at two French general practice congresses (Collège National des Généralistes Enseignants (CNGE, National College of General Practice Teachers) and Congrès de la Médecine Générale de France (CMGF [French General Practice Congress]) and the European General Practice Research Network (EGPRN) meetings held in 2010 and 2015. Methods: We included all oral presentations from the 2010 and 2015 CNGE, CMGF and EGPRN meetings. We searched subsequent publications up to December 2018. We collected study themes, study designs, author qualifications, and journals for all published presentations. Results: Overall, we included 701 oral presentations; 33% of the 2010 presentations, and 30% of the 2015 presentations were subsequently published (P=.40). For both years, the overall publication rate was higher for presentations from the EGPRN meetings compared with the French meetings (55.6% vs 27.1%; P<.05). Published articles mostly concerned clinical research and quantitative methods from academic authors. Seventeen percent of articles from the EGPRN meetings were published by BMC Family Practice and the European Journal of General Practice, whereas 32% of articles from the French meetings were published by Exercer, the French Journal of General Practice. Conclusions: More than half of the presentations at the 2010 and 2015 EGRPN meetings were published, whereas the publication rate from the French meetings remained under 30%. Further efforts are needed to increase the publication rate of general practice studies in peer-reviewed international journals.

Much has been written to inform academics about revising a dissertation and completing a book, but most of this advice focuses on first-time authors. By contrast, there is little advice directed toward more experienced academic authors that considers the conditions they confront when writing a second book, such as increased demands on them to provide institutional and professional service. Second-time authors may also enjoy the assurance that comes from having established a relationship with a publisher or having achieved tenure. This article offers three lessons about how writing a second book is different from writing the first. It considers how experienced authors’ relationships with publishers may change with a second book, and it examines ways to situate a second book in the course of a long academic career.

AbstractThe paper reflects on academic literature on the international normative and institutional framework related to hate crimes. Various theoretical and pragmatic issues have been discussed by academic authors, such as the challenges coming with the obligation of states to record hate crimes or to conduct efficient investigation, the limits of the potential impact of international review mechanisms, or the aims and content of resolutions adopted by international institutions and judgments delivered by the European Court of Human Rights. However, a wide range of practical and conceptual issues related to the existing international standards and the efficiency of international review mechanisms remain to be discussed in the academic sphere.

AbstractArticle Processing Charges (APCs) are significant charges for publishing Open Access (OA), and have no accepted standards for authors to source the funds or negotiate the charges. While there is a growing body of literature exploring academic authors’ perceptions of OA publishing, there is little data on how authors pay for APCs. The aim of this study was to examine how authors prepare for and fund APCs, as well as their perceptions of these charges. In early 2021 the authors deployed a survey to Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai faculty members via email. The survey was completed by 310 faculty, representing 10.6% of the active researcher population. Our findings show that about 50% of respondents include anticipated APC costs in grant applications, and that 16% of faculty will pay APCs using personal funds. Questions evaluating perception of APCs show that while the majority of respondents support the concept of Open Access, most believe that charges are too high and should not fall on authors.

Here we present a new text analysis tool that consists of a text analysis service and an author search service. These services were created by using or extending many existing Free and Open Source tools, including streamlit, requests, WordCloud, TextStat, and The Natural Language Tool Kit. The tool has the capability to retrieve journal hosting links and journal article content from APIs and journal hosting websites. Together, these services allow the user to review the complexity of a scientist’s published work relative to other online-based text repositories. Rather than providing feedback as to the complexity of a single text as previous tools have done, the tool presented here shows the relative complexity across many texts from the same author, while also comparing the readability of the author’s body of work to a variety of other scientific and lay text types. The goal of this work is to apply a more data-driven approach that provides established academic authors with statistical insights into their body of published peer reviewed work. By monitoring these readability metrics, scientists may be able to cater their writing to reach broader audiences, contributing to an improved global communication and understanding of complex topics.

This chapter provides the reader with comments on the Hague Principles from the perspective of South African private international law of contract.Private international law in the Republic of South Africa is historically based on Roman–Dutch and English law, but is today influenced by domestic constitutional values, especially in the fields of international family and succession law. In the realm of the international law of obligations, the impact of the English common law is particularly strong. The notion of ‘the proper law of the contract’ is therefore widely used to indicate the law applicable to contractual obligations. The sources of private international law of contract are almost exclusively case law and the opinions of academic authors. The South African courts have always followed a comparative approach in respect of private international law, initially under the influence of an internationalist understanding of the conflict of laws. The courts would therefore certainly be entitled to refer to the Hague Principles as persuasive authority in the interpretation, supplementation, and development of the rules and principles of South African private international law.

AbstractCreation and exchange of knowledge depends on collaboration. Recent work has suggested that the emergence of collaboration frequently relies on geographic proximity. However, being co-located tends to be associated with other dimensions of proximity, such as social ties or a shared organizational environment. To account for such factors, multiple dimensions of proximity have been proposed, including cognitive, institutional, organizational, social and geographical proximity. Since they strongly interrelate, disentangling these dimensions and their respective impact on collaboration is challenging. To address this issue, we propose various methods for measuring different dimensions of proximity. We then present an approach to compare and rank them with respect to the extent to which they indicate co-publications and co-inventions. We adapt the HypTrails approach, which was originally developed to explain human navigation, to co-author and co-inventor graphs. We evaluate this approach on a subset of the German research community, specifically academic authors and inventors active in research on artificial intelligence (AI). We find that social proximity and cognitive proximity are more important for the emergence of collaboration than geographic proximity.

In the introduction to the volume the editors offer an overview of concepts that will appear throughout the book and set the scene for readers with a summary of the Irish political and economic context. The chapter then sketches the kinds of policy analysis the volume encompasses, providing readers with a guide to the wide-ranging and diverse contributions. These contributions include those from practitioner authors who provide a number of case studies and other examples of policy analysis from their own experiences, and academic authors who provide insights into a variety of approaches to the study of policy analysis applied in Ireland since independence. The chapter also outlines how the chapters of the volume are grouped in four subsections.
