Abstract In the past ten years, terahertz technology has developed rapidly in wireless communications, spectroscopy, and imaging. Various functional devices have been developed, such as filters, absorbers, polarizers, mixers, and modulators. Among these, the terahertz phase modulation is a current research hotspot. It is the core technology to realize flexible control of the terahertz wavefront, beam scanning, focusing deflection. It is indispensable in terahertz wireless communication, high-resolution imaging, and radar systems. This review summarizes the research progress of terahertz phase modulators from the two major types: free space and guided wave integration. Among these, the free space terahertz phase modulator is realized by combining the tunable materials and artificial metasurfaces. Based on different types of tunable materials, the terahertz free space phase modulator combining the semiconductor, liquid crystal, phase change materials, graphene, and other two-dimensional materials are introduced, and the influence of different materials on the phase modulation performance is discussed and analyzed. The monolithic integration and waveguide embedding methods are introduced separately, and the characteristics of different forms of terahertz-guided wave phase modulation are also discussed. Finally, the development trends of terahertz phase modulators, possible new methods, and future application requirements are discussed.

Nanocrystal gel networks can be responsive, tunable materials, but deliberately designing their structure and controlling their properties have been challenging. By employing reversibly bonded molecular linkers, gelation can be realized under conditions predicted by thermodynamics. But, simulations have offered the only microscopic insights, with no experimental means to monitor linking leading to gelation. Here, we introduce a metal coordination linkage with a distinct optical signature allowing us to quantify linking in situ and establish the structural and thermodynamic basis for assembly. Due to coupling between linked indium tin oxide nanocrystals, their infrared absorption shifts abruptly at a chemically tunable gelation temperature. We quantify bonding spectroscopically and use molecular dynamics simulations to understand bonding motifs as a function of temperature, revealing that gel formation is governed by reaching a critical number of effective links that extend the nanocrystal network. Microscopic insights from our colorimetric linking chemistry enable switchable gels based on equilibrium thermodynamic principles, opening the door to rational design of programmable nanocrystal net-work assemblies.

Abstract Dynamic structural color based on tunable optical resonance plays a key role in applications including encryption visualization, camouflage and colorimetric sensing. However, the current design requires either complex growth processes of the high-quality tunable materials or complicated circuit designs. This work makes a humidity-swelling hydrogel layer for metal–insulator–metal (MIM) structure in the dynamic multi-color display. Here, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel structure is patterned through grayscale e-beam lithography and the controlled PVA thickness leads the programmable reflective resonance covering the entire visible range. By varying the ambient humidity between 9.8 and 90.1% RH, the reflective resonance of the structure is tailored across a wavelength range over 100 nm. Our materials platform of humidity-sensitive hydrogel resist presents a novel approach of the stepwise and reversible optical tunability for photonic devices.

Tunable ferroelectric capacitors, which exhibit a decrease in the dielectric permittivity under an electric field, are widely used in electronics for RF tunable applications. Current devices use barium strontium titanate (BST) as the tunable dielectric, but new applications call for tunable materials with specific performance improvements. It is then of crucial importance to dispose of a large panel of electrically characterized materials to identify the most suited compound for a given set of device specifications. Here, we report on the dielectric tuning properties of Ba1−xCaxTi1−yZryO3 (BCTZ) thin films libraries (0 ≤ x ≤ 30% and 0 ≤ y ≤ 28.5%) synthesized by combinatorial pulsed laser deposition (CPLD). An original CPLD approach allowing reliable and statistical ternary phase diagrams exploration is reported. The effects of Ca and Zr content on tunability, breakdown voltage and dielectric losses are explicated and shown to be beneficial up to a certain amount. Compounds close to (Ba0.84Ca0.16)(Ti0.8Zr0.2)O3 exhibit the highest figures of merit, while a zone with compositions around (Ba0.91Ca0.09)(Ti0.81Zr0.19)O3 show the best compromise between tuning ratio and figure of merit. These results highlight the potential of BCTZ thin films for electrically tunable applications.
