It was almost certainly Ovid who joined together the narratives of frustrated desire of Echo (in love with Narcissus) and Narcissus (in love with his own mirror image). This he did by exploiting the Latin word imago, which defines both the visual reflection and the acoustic one. The illusion produced by the reflection is the central theme in Ovid’s story, and it is also the principle on which the two stories are closely intertwined, replicating the theme of reflection in both structure and language, and offering a reading of reality as a space dominated by ambiguities and deceptions. Narcissus’ ‘tragicomedy of errors’ implies at the same time a discourse on the fictitious nature of all literary texts, but his figure is also an emblem of the poet bent over in admiration of his own virtuosity, and in particular of Ovid himself, who was said by Quintilian to have been ‘too in love with his own brilliance’.

Measles, known from the early ages, is caused by a paramyxovirus. A Persian colleague named Rhazes (854-925 A.D.) was likely the first to distinguish smallpox from measles, this milder disease getting the name “morbilli” (little disease) from the Latin word morbus (disease). Being one of the most contagious infections, a measles-infected individual may on average transmit the virus to 12-18 susceptible persons from 3-4 days before to soon after first clinical symptoms appear. Essentially only Man’s (and some monkey species’) disease, measles is potentially eradicable by vaccination, provided vaccine uptake exceeds 95 % for a long enough time. This remains a challenge, and we likely will continue to have measles with us for a long time.

Stress refers to the strain from the conflict between our external environment and us, leading to emotional and physical pressure. In our fast paced world, it is impossible to live without stress, whether you are a student or a working adult. There is both positive and negative stress, depending on each individual’s unique perception of the tension between the two forces. Stress bears deliberating effects on both the employees and the employer. As per Dr H seyles, Stress is defined as “a state of psychological and physiological imbalance resulting from the disparity between situational demand and the individual’s ability and motivation to meet those needs”. The word stress has its origin in the Latin word string ere to draw tight. In the 17thcentury the word was used to describe affliction and hardship. The meaning of the word later included the concepts of pressure, strain or force. Today the description of stress includes an outside stimulus and the person’s response to it. Several studies have focused on the possible relation between stress, illness and different ways people respond to it. These studies distinguish the various aspects of stress which a person may face in life, e.g. stress at home, in personal life or at work. This review focuses on stress at work, with particular emphasis to the nursing profession, in an attempt to explore possible management strategies that may decrease it (Golubic etal., 2009, Lu et al. 2009).

The Elizabethan poets and critics realized that the English verse line was neither merely syllabic (like French verse) nor quantitative (like Greek or Latin verse), but, they argued, governed by the regular disposition of accents. What seems obvious to us was not so to them. Accent did not belong to any metrical system known to sixteenth-century humanists; it pertained to the spoken pronunciation of the individual (Greek or Latin) word, and to the teaching of grammar, where it was known as prosody. The chapter outlines the place of accent in ancient and early modern grammatical theory before discussing George Gascoigne’s revolutionary theory of English metrical accent. It then looks at some subsequent developments in thinking about verse and accent in later sixteenth- and seventeenth-century writers and consider grammar as a neglected place of criticism.

In the writings of St. Augustine, the Latin word cor occurs more than 8,000 times, being one of the most important, though ambiguous, terms of his anthropology and spirituality. As a synonym for the inner man (homo interior) it encompasses the whole affective, intellectual, moral and religious life. In this sense, it is the privileged place for a personal encounter with God. The analysis of Augustine’s writings reveals a link between the concept of the Trinity and indications concerning the spiritual life of man. Reflections on the “heart” can be put into a kind of triptych: creation “in the image of God,” illumination by Christ, and dilatation by the Holy Spirit. The impact of God on the human heart should find its completion in a voluntarily adopted attitude of adoration, humility and love.
