Stress refers to the strain from the conflict between our external environment and us, leading to emotional and physical pressure. In our fast paced world, it is impossible to live without stress, whether you are a student or a working adult. There is both positive and negative stress, depending on each individual’s unique perception of the tension between the two forces. Stress bears deliberating effects on both the employees and the employer. As per Dr H seyles, Stress is defined as “a state of psychological and physiological imbalance resulting from the disparity between situational demand and the individual’s ability and motivation to meet those needs”. The word stress has its origin in the Latin word string ere to draw tight. In the 17thcentury the word was used to describe affliction and hardship. The meaning of the word later included the concepts of pressure, strain or force. Today the description of stress includes an outside stimulus and the person’s response to it. Several studies have focused on the possible relation between stress, illness and different ways people respond to it. These studies distinguish the various aspects of stress which a person may face in life, e.g. stress at home, in personal life or at work. This review focuses on stress at work, with particular emphasis to the nursing profession, in an attempt to explore possible management strategies that may decrease it (Golubic etal., 2009, Lu et al. 2009).

Its aim is to explore various sources of stress in kindergartens in the City of Zagreb, as well as stress intensity regarding years of work and education group in which they have been working. The study involved 257 educators from Zagreb, aged 22 to 65. For research purposes, the Scale of Assessment of Stress at Work of the Educators was used. The scale describes situations the educators meet daily and asks them to estimate to what extent particular situation is stressful. The research has shown that the greatest intensity of stress in educators is caused by parent behaviour. Additionally, prolonged work experience reduces stress in certain situations. The research results contribute to a better understanding of the work of educators and specific sources of stress in their work environment. The changes in organizations appear as a reaction to the organizational environment changes. In order to manage these changes successfully, the managers need to anticipate and design alternative strategies by preparing different options.  Nevertheless, the complexity of the global environment forces the managers to adopt strategies for their organizations that are facilitating the creation of new strategic competences and competitive advantages to face the environmental rapid changes. In this context, this paper is aiming to illustrate the main directions the change management may consider to change the organization strategies in order to harmonize them to the external environment, such as: integration versus externalization, flexible specialization and flexible organization, standardization versus adaptation, market segmentation, relationship building and maintaining and communication integration.  However, the new strategies are based on a changed attitude of the managers towards the competitive advantage that is dynamic and focused on creation rather then to operations.

Nurse retention is of extreme importance in modern healthcare given the ever increasing nursing shortage and the high cost of training newly hired nurses. Research has repeatedly demonstrated that stress is strongly correlated with nursing staff turnover. This study examines the relationship of Secondary Traumatic Stress, Burnout, Compassion Satisfaction, personal life stress and nurse demographic characteristics with having considered leaving the nursing profession due to work-related stress. A survey was administered to nurses at a large pediatric and women’s hospital in the southern United States. Bivariate analyses (n = 496) indicated being Caucasian (p < .001), working fewer hours per week (p = .009), experiencing more personal life stress (p < .001), having higher Burnout (p < .001), or Secondary Traumatic Stress (p < .001) scores or lower Compassion Satisfaction (p = .015) scores were significantly associated with increased likelihood of having considered leaving the nursing profession. In multivariable logistic regression analysis, after variable selection, higher levels of Burnout (p < .001), more life stress (p = .010), being Caucasian (p < .001) and working fewer hours (p = .004) were all significantly associated with higher odds of considering leaving the nursing profession. Interventions to reduce work-related Burnout and help nurses cope with stressful life events are needed to increase retention of nurses in the profession.

This article reports on role player expectations regarding the education of nursing research. The importance of the role player expectations are two-fold: firstly as a factor in the external environment influencing and guiding the formulation phase of the development of standards and secondly, due to the clear indications of problems regarding nursing research in the nursing profession in literature. The role player expectations were elicited using a qualitative, exploratory and contextual design. The role player population included nurse educators, nurses in managerial, clinical and research positions, students and the medical profession. The data was gathered using the naïve sketches and qualitative data analysis was done using Morse & Field’s approach (1996:103-107) in combination with Tesch’s data analysis approach as cited by Creswell (1994:154-156). Sixty initial categories were narrowed down to six final categories, which are the research learning programme, personnel, students, departmental policies, funding and support systems.

An ageing population is accompanied by an increased number of older adults living with HIV. So far, our knowledge regarding the life experiences of older adults living with HIV is still poor and under researched. The purpose of this study is to present new knowledge by interviewing nine Finnish HIV-positive individuals of 50 years of age and older. The data were analysed by inductive content analysis. Living with HIV is shaped by unique personal life experiences. These experiences played an important role on how the interviewees assessed their lives and their future as HIV positive individuals. Most of the participants reacted negatively to their HIV-positive diagnosis. However, throughout time they had found meaning in their lives and had developed a degree of positive attitude towards life and future which was articulated in terms of a good overall balanced life. Since caring is the tenor of the nursing profession, nurses should be able to identify and implement methods for assessing how successfully older adults living with HIV age and intervene in an informed way whenever needed.

What constitutes successful management of public enterprises? Executives of successful enterprises from 14 commonwealth countries exchanged their experiences and outlined strategies at two roundtable meetings under the auspices of the Commonwealth Secretariat, London. This paper is a summary of the views of the executives presented at the two meetings. In recent years, public enterprises in developed and developing countries have been criticized for not fulfilling the expectations placed on them. The case studies and the discussions at the two meetings, however, reveal that many public enterprises have been managed, successfully. The strategies outlined by the executives relate to managing the external environment, the enterprise-government interface, internal management, building enterprise culture, managing human resources, and the role of leadership.
