The existing methods of confering hydrophobic properties to various building materials are considered. Obtaining special, including hydrophobic, properties of water-emulsion paints is a very relevant task. Previously, a method was developed for producing an emulsion of a polysiloxane stabilized with polyvinyl alcohol. The paper describes the possibility of using a hydrophobisating emulsion of polyhydrosiloxane as a functional additive for an acrylic water-dispersion paint. This emulsion is capable of forming coatings on dense and porous surfaces with an adjustable contact angle up to 105 °. The use of this emulsion, with its sufficient coalescence for volumetric hydrophobization of coatings, makes it possible to obtain a high contact angle on the surface. In the paper, it was assumed that the partial introduction of small amounts (up to 10 %) of a hydrophobizing emulsion into water-dispersion paints would allow achieving the contact angle of wetting for similar coatings consisting exclusively of emulsion. It is shown that the introduction of small amounts of a hydrophobizing emulsion with an auxiliary coalescing action of ethylene glycol makes it possible to impart hydrophobic properties to the surface of the resulting coating. When the optimum concentration of ethylene glycol in the coating is reached, dissolution and transport (yield) of polysiloxane to the surface is ensured. The research carried out made it possible to develop a paint composition with a hydrophobizing emulsion with a contact wetting angle of about 100 °, which ensured the hydrophobicity of the previously hydrophilic coating of a water-dispersion acrylic paint.

Blood is key evidence to reconstruct crime scenes in forensic sciences. Blood identification can help to confirm a suspect, and for that reason, several chemical methods are used to reconstruct the crime scene however, these methods can affect subsequent DNA analysis. Therefore, this study presents a non-destructive method for bloodstain identification using Hyperspectral Imaging (HSI, 397–1000 nm range). The proposed method is based on the visualization of heme-components bands in the 500–700 nm spectral range. For experimental and validation purposes, a total of 225 blood (different donors) and non-blood (protein-based ketchup, rust acrylic paint, red acrylic paint, brown acrylic paint, red nail polish, rust nail polish, fake blood, and red ink) samples (HSI cubes, each cube is of size 1000 × 512 × 224, in which 1000 × 512 are the spatial dimensions and 224 spectral bands) were deposited on three substrates (white cotton fabric, white tile, and PVC wall sheet). The samples are imaged for up to three days to include aging. Savitzky Golay filtering has been used to highlight the subtle bands of all samples, particularly the aged ones. Based on the derivative spectrum, important spectral bands were selected to train five different classifiers (SVM, ANN, KNN, Random Forest, and Decision Tree). The comparative analysis reveals that the proposed method outperformed several state-of-the-art methods.

In recent years, with the rapid development of the building industry in western cities during the period of “Western Development” in China, the paints industry has developed rapidly and become more mature. In addition, waterborne inorganic exterior wall paints have been a great choice in the building industry because of their reduced volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and less toxicity and odor. However, the problem of stain resistance for exterior wall paints in western cities has not been solved, which has become a major obstacle to the application and promotion of exterior wall paints in western cities in China. Therefore, effective measures should eventually be carried out for improving the stain resistance of exterior wall paints in western cities in China. In this paper, an experimental study on improving stain resistance for exterior wall paints in a typical western city in China, Chongqing, is reported. In the three defined designs, the effects of the paint structure type, the pigment volume concentration (PVC), thickeners, cosolvents and wetting and dispersing agents on the stain resistance of exterior wall paints in a typical western city in China, Chongqing, were examined. The experimental results suggest that the stain resistance of silicone–acrylic paint was the most suitable among the three kinds of tested paints (silicone–acrylic paint, styrene–acrylic paint and pure acrylic paint). In addition, the PVC had a great influence on the stain resistance of the exterior wall paints. The compactness, water absorption and stain resistance of the paint’s film were the most suitable when the PVCs of the paints reached 45%. Furthermore, the tested wetting and dispersing agents made the same contributions to the paints’ stain resistance, as their decline rates for reflectivity were similar. The reflectivity of the film significantly decreased when the ratio of associating thickener to non-associating thickener reached 4:1, and also significantly declined when the content of propylene glycol reached 5%.

In this study, the effect of UV stabilizers (dihydroxy benzophenone and nano zinc oxide) on the weathering degradation of water-based acrylic coating on beech wood was investigated. The wood specimens were coated by brush and then weathered naturally for six months. The obtained results showed that the use of nano zinc oxide reduced color changes and mold growth on the surface of weathered samples. However, the results of contact angle, pull-off adhesion, colorimeter and FTIR revealed that the dihydroxyl benzophenone was not effective in preventing weathering degradation of coated wood.

Ocular prosthetics are mainly created to meet the aspect of esthetic consideration. The paint application in ocular prosthetics construction is remaining an option for Prosthodontist. This study aims to examine the effect of types of paint toward iris color change of the ocular prosthetics. Three black types of paint: oil paint (Maries Oil Color, China), automotive paint (Avian, Indonesia), and acrylic paint (Sakura, Japan) were used to paint paper disc to produce 27 iris ocular prosthetics. Chromameter was used to examine the first and the final color after acrylic processing using themicrowave. The measurement results in the process using Commission Internationale de l’Eclairage. One-way ANOVA test showed significant differences between the three types of paints on ocular prosthetics (p<0.05). The LSD test revealed that oil paint groups had more significant results than the automotive paint group and acrylic paint group, while the automotive paint group did not have significant differences with the acrylic paint group (p>0.05). Thus, it is conclusive that oil paint influences the iris color change of the ocular prosthetics.
