This essay contends that in quantum gravity, some spatial regions do not admit a unitary Hilbert space. Because the gravitational path integral spontaneously breaks CPT symmetry, “states” with negative probability can be identified on either side of trapped surfaces. I argue that these negative norm states are tolerable, by analogy to quantum mechanics. This viewpoint suggests a resolution of the firewall paradox, similar to black hole complementarity. Implications for cosmology are briefly discussed.

Abstract We study the nonlinear evolution of unstable flux compactifications, applying numerical relativity techniques to solve the Einstein equations in D dimensions coupled to a q-form field and positive cosmological constant. We show that initially homogeneous flux compactifications are unstable to dynamically forming warped compactifications. In some cases, we find that the warping process can serve as a toy-model of slow-roll inflation, while in other instances, we find solutions that eventually evolve to a singular state. Analogous to dynamical black hole horizons, we use the geometric properties of marginally trapped surfaces to characterize the lower dimensional vacua in the inhomogeneous and dynamical settings we consider. We find that lower-dimensional vacua with a lower expansion rate are dynamically favoured, and in some cases find spacetimes that undergo a period of accelerated expansion followed by contraction.

In this paper, we study the collapse of a thin dust shell from the point of view of the horizon dynamics. We identify the critical surfaces at which time and space coordinates interchange their roles and investigate their properties by using the formalism of trapped surfaces. We show the existence of marginally outer trapped surfaces that are associated with the presence of quasi-local horizons. A particular shell configuration that avoids the formation of horizons is interpreted as naked shell.

Abstract We prove that consistency of the holographic dictionary implies a hallmark prediction of the weak cosmic censorship conjecture: that in classical gravity, trapped surfaces lie behind event horizons. In particular, the existence of a trapped surface implies the existence of an event horizon, and that furthermore this event horizon must be outside of the trapped surface. More precisely, we show that the formation of event horizons outside of a strong gravity region is a direct consequence of causal wedge inclusion, which is required by entanglement wedge reconstruction. We make few assumptions beyond the absence of evaporating singularities in strictly classical gravity. We comment on the implication that spacetimes with naked trapped surfaces do not admit a holographic dual, note a possible application to holographic complexity, and speculate on the dual CFT interpretation of a trapped surface.

AbstractWe prove several rigidity results related to the spacetime positive mass theorem. A key step is to show that certain marginally outer trapped surfaces are weakly outermost. As a special case, our results include a rigidity result for Riemannian manifolds with a lower bound on their scalar curvature.
