Selective mono-aza-Michael additions of divinyl ketones with 3-(arylimino)indolin-2-ones in the presence of cesium carbonate are described. N-Enone-functionalized 3-(arylimino)indolin-2-ones were efficiently synthesized in satisfactory yield. The salient features of this protocol are high regioselectivity, high yield, and mild conditions.

The main purpose of this publication was to obtain the S-enantiomer of indan-1-ol with high enantiomeric excess and satisfactory yield. In our research, we used carrot callus cultures (Daucus carota L.), whereby the enzymatic system reduced indan-1-one and oxidized indan-1-ol. During the reaction of reduction, after five days, we received over 50% conversion, with the enantiomeric excess of the formed S-alcohol above 99%. In turn, during the oxidation of racemic indan-1-ol after 15 days, 36.7% of alcohol with an enantiomeric excess 57.4% S(+) remained in the reaction mixture. In addition, our research confirmed that the reactions of reduction and oxidation are competing reactions during the transformation of indan-1-ol and indan-1-one in carrot callus cultures.

The easy and cheap method for the preparation of 5 hydroxymethylfurfural in a satisfactory yield is described in this paper. The method is a practical modification of the old methodology elaborated 74 years ago. Its requirements are so simple that it may be used in scarcely equipped provincial laboratories, which do not have any important financial support.

A novel method for the synthesis of CL-20 by nitration of TAIW was investigated. HNO3 electrolyte, containing generated dinitrogen pentoxide and unreacted dinitrogen tetraoxide, was directly used as a nitrating agent and the result was encouraging. A series of SO3H-functionalized ionic liquids were utilized to further improve the result. The satisfactory yield of CL-20 (94%) makes it a useful method for the green and clean synthesis of CL-20.

AbstractThe aim of the work was to select pollinators for sweet cherry cultivars: ‘Vanda’, ‘Techlovan’, ‘Syl–via’ and ‘Regina’, which are of great economic significance in Poland. As pollinators, three or four different cultivars with the same or similar flowering time as the pollinated cultivars were evaluated annually. The pollinators belonged to different incompatibility groups. Pollination was carried out over four consecutive seasons. Assuming that for a good yield more than 20% of the flowers should develop fruits, a good polli–nator for the cv. ‘Vanda’ was ‘Techlovan’, and for the cv. ‘Regina’ - ‘Sylvia’. The cv. ‘Techlovan’ was pollinated to best effect by ‘Vega’, and the cv. ‘Sylvia’ by ‘Regina’, but the setting of fruits in the last two combinations was moderately good. Low to moderately good fruit setting but depending on the year was observed in the combinations ‘Sylvia’ x ‘Summit’, ‘Regina’ x ‘Summit’, and ‘Regina’ x ‘Rainier’. Cultivar ‘Summit’ for ‘Sylvia’, and ‘Summit’ and ‘Rainier’ for the cv. ‘Regina’ should not be used as pollinators because the low percentage of fruit set obtained annually does not guarantee a satisfactory yield.

The synthesis of a mannose-bearing disaccharide containing a thiol spacer at the reducing end was carried out to provide a tethered sugar suitable for attaching to gold nanoparticles. Such sugar is designed to mimic carbohydrates involved in cell-surface interactions. The molecule was constructed via Schmidt glycosylation of an appropriately protected glycosyl donor and an acceptor, followed by removal of protective groups and reductive amination to introduce a protected thiol spacer at the reducing end of the glycan. Subsequent removal of the thiol protective group gave the target disaccharide in a satisfactory yield.

5-Lithiated 4,4-dimethyl-2-(2-thienyl)oxazoline reacted by halide and tetrahydrothiophene (THT) substitution with [AuCl(THT)] to form a cyclic trinuclear compound (1) in satisfactory yield. Spectroscopic studies and single-crystal X-ray analyses clarified the bonding within the ring system. The structure determination of two THF solvates revealed differences in the supramolecular assembly of the constituting molecules.
