Purpose: This study aimed to develop a new 3D dual-echo rosette k-space trajectory, specifically for applications of ultra-short echo time (UTE) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The direct imaging of the myelin bilayer, which has ultra-short transverse relaxation time (uT2), was acquired to test the performance of the proposed UTE sequence. Theory and Methods: The rosette trajectory was developed based on rotations of a "petal-like" pattern in the kx-ky plane, with oscillated extensions in kz-direction for 3D coverage. Five healthy volunteers were recruited and underwent ten dual-echo rosette UTE scans with varied echo times (TEs). Dual-exponential model fitting was performed to separate uT2 signals, with the output of uT2 fraction, uT2 value and long T2 value. Results: The reconstructed images' signal contrast between white matter (WM) and grey matter (GM) increased with longer TEs. The WM regions had higher uT2 fraction values than GM (10.9% ± 1.9% vs. 5.7% ± 2.4%). The uT2 value was about 0.12 milliseconds in WM. Conclusion: The higher uT2 fraction value in WM compared to GM demonstrated the ability of the proposed sequence to capture rapidly decaying signals.

Internal bracing (IB) is an augmentation method using high-strength nonabsorbable tape. However, there is no detailed information about the direction, location, or number of IBs required for scapholunate interosseous ligament (SLIL) injury repair. Thus, this study compared the biomechanical characteristics of short-transverse IB, long-oblique IB, and the combination of short-transverse and long-oblique (Combo) IB for SLIL injury in a biomechanical cadaveric model. We prepared nine fresh-frozen full upper extremity cadaveric specimens for this study. The scapholunate distance, scapholunate angle, and radioscaphoid angle were measured using the MicroScribe digitizing system with the SLIL intact, after scapholunate dissociation and the three different reconstructions. Three-dimensional digital records were obtained in six wrist positions in each experimental condition. Short-transverse IB had a similar effect compared with long-oblique IB in addressing the widening of the scapholunate distance. However, both were less effective than Combo IB. For scaphoid flexion deformity, short-transverse IB had minimal effect, while long-oblique IB had a similar effect compared to Combo IB. Combo IB was the most effective for improving distraction intensity and rotational strength. This study provides important information about the biomechanical characteristics of three different IB methods for SLIL injury and may be useful to clinicians in treating scapholunate dissociation.

Abstract A new genus and species, Geminispermum virginiense, is described based on a well-preserved coalified cupulate reproductive unit recovered from the Early Cretaceous (early–middle Albian) Puddledock locality, Virginia, U.S.A. The reproductive unit is bisymmetrical and consists of an axis that bifurcates into two cupule-bearing stalks, each in the axil of a bract. Each cupule stalk bears a single non-valvate cupule recurved towards the center of the reproductive unit. The cupule opens distally by a short transverse slit with a distinct upper margin. Each cupule almost completely encloses a single orthotropous seed that is free from the cupule except at the base. The nucellus is also free from the integument except at the basal point of attachment. Geminispermum combines features of the ovulate structures of Caytoniales, Umkomasiales (= Corystospermales, including Doyleales) and Petriellales, but cannot be included in any of these existing orders as they are currently understood. The recurved, closed, non-valvate cupules are particularly similar to those of Caytonia, Petriellaea and Reymanownaea in external morphology, but differ in being one-seeded. The cupules of Geminispermum differ from the one-seeded cupules of Umkomasiales in being non-valvate and in having only a single cupule per bract. Geminispermum is perhaps most similar to the one- or two-seeded non-valvate cupules of Ktalenia from the Early Cretaceous of Argentina, but Ktalenia is poorly preserved, details of cupule architecture are uncertain, and the cupules appear to be associated with a single strongly dissected bract. Geminispermum is currently the only unequivocal seed plant cupule recovered from the Early Cretaceous Potomac Group and is distinct from all previously described cupulate reproductive structures.

Effect of intermediate thermomechanical treatment on tensile properties at short-transverse direction, fracture mechanism and microstructure of 2A97 Al-Li alloy thick plate were studied by tensile testing, SEM, EBSD and TEM.The results show that with the increasing of compression deformation, the strength and elongation of the alloy increase first and then decrease slightly. The fracture mode of the alloy changes from quasi-cleavage fracture to high energy ductile fracture. When the compression deformation rises to 20%, the elongated structure are replaced by a more uniform and equiaxial structure. The distribution of δ phase distribute more homogeneously in the grains.

The taxonomic limits of Acorystus are reviewed. The genus is characterized by a body surface shiny and mostly impunctate, supra-antennal area with a conical horn, epomia and posterior transverse carina of propodeum entirely absent, ovipositor tip very slender, without nodus and with very weak teeth. Two new taxa, A. albicornis Scherrer et Santos, sp. nov., and A.circumflexus Scherrer et Santos, sp. nov., are described and illustrated. Acorystus albicornis is diagnosed mainly by the white band of the female flagellum covering only about five flagellomeres, supra-antennal area with a white central horn, with a very weak and slightly rugose longitudinal swelling, orbital band reaching supra-clypeal and supra-antennal areas, propodeum with anterior transverse carina almost straight, and pleural carina very weak, with short transverse wrinkles. It is recorded from two close localities at Espírito Santo State (19º57’55”S 40º32’25”W and 20º16’21”S 40º28’40”W), in the Atlantic Forest of Southeastern Brazil. Acorystus circumflexus is diagnosed mainly by the white band of the female flagellum covering about fifteen flagellomeres, supra-antennal area with a black central horn, with a strong and rugose longitudinal swelling, orbital band absent, propodeum with anterior transverse carina centrally arched forwards, and pleural carina entirely absent. It is recorded only from Caxiuanã (2º4’54”S 51º51’5”), Eastern Amazon Basin. A key to all three known species of the genus is provided.

The non-recurrent laryngeal nerve (nRLN) is a rare anatomic variation that every head and neck surgeon must be aware of, in order to avoid intraoperative injury which leads to postoperative morbidity. We are reporting a case of a nRLN in a 47 year old female patient with medullary thyroid carcinoma who was surgically treated with total thyroidectomy and lymph node dissection. Both two inferior laryngeal nerves were identified, fully exposed and preserved along their cervical courses. However, we found that the right inferior laryngeal nerve was non-recurrent and directly arised from the cervical vagal trunk, entered the larynx after a short transverse course and parallel to the inferior thyroid artery. The safety of thyroid operations is dependent on high index of suspicion, meticulous identification and dissection of laryngeal nerves either recurrent or non-recurrent. This leads to minimum risk of iatrogenic damage of the nerves. Complete knowledge of the anatomy of these neural structures, including all their anatomic variations is of paramount importance.

In the present work, the influence of Cu content on microstructure, mechanical properties and exfoliation corrosion behaviors of Al-Zn-Mg-xCu alloy extrusions has been investigated in longitudinal-transverse (L-T) and short-longitudinal (S-L) directions by means of mechanical tensile and exfoliation corrosion testing combined with optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results showed that a higher Cu content significantly decreased the fracture toughness and ductility of the alloy in S-L direction compared with L-T direction. Concomitant with the increase in Cu content, a transition in fracture mode was observed from transgranular dimpled rupture to intergranular rupture in S-L direction. Moreover, the exfoliation corrosion (EXCO) resistance of the alloy decreased as the Cu content increased and the exfoliation corrosion resistance of the alloy in short-transverse (S-T) direction was better than that of L-T direction. These results were mainly associated with the large number of coarse intermetallics caused by high Cu content in the L-T direction of alloy.
