Breeding is costly for many animals, including birds that must deliver food to a central place (i.e. nest). Measuring energy expenditure throughout the breeding season can provide valuable insights on physiological limitations by highlighting periods of high demands, and ultimately allows to improve conservation strategies. However, quantifying energy expenditure in wildlife can be challenging, as existing methods do not measure both active (e.g. foraging) and resting energy costs across short and long time scales. Here, we develop a novel method for comparing active and resting costs in 66 pre-breeding and breeding seabirds (black-legged kittiwakes; Rissa tridactyla) by combining accelerometry and triiodothyronine (T3), as proxies for active and resting costs, respectively. Activity energy costs were higher during incubation (p=0.0004) and chick-rearing (p<0.0001) compared to pre-laying, due to an increase in time spent in flight of 11% (p=0.0005) and 15% (p<0.0001), respectively. Levels of T3, reflecting resting costs, peaked marginally during incubation with an average concentration of 4.71±1.97 pg mL−1 in comparison to 2.66±1.30 pg mL−1 in pre-laying (p=0.05), and 3.16±2.85 pg mL−1 in chick-rearing (p=11). Thus, although chick-rearing is often assumed to be the costliest breeding stage by multiple studies, our results suggest that incubation could be more costly due to high resting costs. We highlight the importance of accounting for both active and resting costs when assessing energy expenditure.

Optimal nutritional therapy is important to improve outcome in critically ill population in an intensive care unit (ICU). Although indirect calorimetry (IC) is currently a gold standard for resting energy expenditure (REE) measurement, yet it is still not routinely used in the ICU. A total of 146 mechanically ventilated patients were randomised to receive enteral nutrition (EN) with energy targeted based on continuous indirect calorimetry (IC) measurements (IC group, n=73) or according to 25 kcal/kg/day (SWB group, n=73). Patient characteristics were equally distributed and the IC group showed lower mean measured REE (1668.1 + 231.7 vs 1512.0 + 177.1 kcal, p<0.001). Results also showed a significant deficiency in the daily (-148.8 + 105.1 vs. -4.99 + 44.0 kcal, p<0.001) and total cumulative energy balances (-1165.3 + 958.1 vs. 46.5 + 369.5 kcal, p<0.001) in the SWB group as compared to the IC group. From the Kaplan-Meier survival analysis, we found that ICU mortality was significantly lower in the IC group with better survival probability compared to the SWB group (log-rank test, p = 0.03). However, both groups showed comparable results in terms of ICU length of stay, duration of mechanical ventilation and incidence of feeding intolerance. In conclusion, this study showed that tightly supervised nutritional therapy based on continuous IC measurement provides significantly less mean daily and cumulative energy deficits as well as significantly reduced ICU mortality rate.

This study aimed to investigate the effect of three different preoperative fasting regimens on the incidence of gastro-oesophageal reflux (GOR) in dogs under general anaesthesia. Ninety dogs undergoing non-abdominal and non-thoracic elective surgery were included in the study and equally allocated to three groups. Dogs received canned food providing half the daily resting energy requirements (RER) 3 h prior to premedication (group 3H), a quarter of the daily RER 3 h before premedication (group 3Q), and half the daily RER 12 h before premedication (group 12H). The animals were premedicated with acepromazine and pethidine, anaesthesia was induced with propofol and maintained with isoflurane vaporised in oxygen. Oesophageal pH was monitored throughout anaesthesia. Demographic and surgery-related parameters were not different among groups. The incidence of GOR was 11/30 in group 3H (36.7%), 9/30 in group 3Q (30.0%) and 5/30 in group 12H (16.7%), which was not statistically different (p = 0.262). Reduction of the amount of the preoperative meal from half to a quarter of the daily RER did not reduce the incidence of GOR but resulted in a lower oesophageal pH (p = 0.003). The results of this study suggest that the administration of a meal 3 h before anaesthesia does not have any beneficial effect in the reduction of GOR incidence in dogs compared to the administration of a meal 12 h before anaesthesia.

Background and Aims: The determination of energy requirements is necessary to promote adequate growth and nutritional status in pediatric populations. Currently, several predictive equations have been designed and modified to estimate energy expenditure at rest. Our objectives were (1) to identify the equations designed for energy expenditure prediction and (2) to identify the anthropometric and demographic variables used in the design of the equations for pediatric patients who are healthy and have illness.Methods: A systematic search in the Medline/PubMed, EMBASE and LILACS databases for observational studies published up to January 2021 that reported the design of predictive equations to estimate basal or resting energy expenditure in pediatric populations was carried out. Studies were excluded if the study population included athletes, adult patients, or any patients taking medications that altered energy expenditure. Risk of bias was assessed using the Quality Assessment Tool for Observational Cohort and Cross-Sectional Studies.Results: Of the 769 studies identified in the search, 39 met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed. Predictive equations were established for three pediatric populations: those who were healthy (n = 8), those who had overweight or obesity (n = 17), and those with a specific clinical situation (n = 14). In the healthy pediatric population, the FAO/WHO and Schofield equations had the highest R2 values, while in the population with obesity, the Molnár and Dietz equations had the highest R2 values for both boys and girls.Conclusions: Many different predictive equations for energy expenditure in pediatric patients have been published. Abstract Purpose Low energy availability in males needs more original research to understand its health and performance consequences. The aim of the study was to induce low energy availability in previously healthy male endurance athletes by reducing energy availability by 25% for 14 consecutive days and measure any potential changes in performance, health, mental state or energy markers. Methods Energy availability was reduced in 12 trained, well-trained and elite endurance athletes by increasing energy expenditure and controlling energy intake. After intervention, health was assessed by blood draw, body composition was measured, energy markers by measuring resting energy expenditure, performance with three specific tests (measuring endurance, agility and explosive power) and two questionnaires were used for psychological assessment (the Three Factor Eating Questionnaire and Well-being questionnaire). Results Reduced energy availability (22.4 ± 6.3 kcal/kg FFM/day) caused significantly lower haemoglobin values (t(12) = 2.652, p = 0.022), there was a tendency for lower iron and IGF-1 (p = 0.066 and p = 0.077, respectively). Explosive power was reduced (t(12) = 4.570, p = 0.001), lactate metabolism was altered and athletes reported poorer well-being (t(12) = 2.385, p = 0.036). Cognitive restriction was correlated with energy availability (r = 0.528, p = 0.039). Conclusion This is the first research providing direct evidence that suboptimal energy availability negatively impacts explosive power before hormonal changes occur in male endurance athletes. It is also the first to show direct association of low energy availability and higher cognitive restriction. We also observed worse well-being and lower haemoglobin values. 25% of energy availability reduction as not enough to elicit changes in resting energy expenditure.

Abstract A cross-sectional study was carried out in a cohort of newborns with less than 32 weeks of gestational age. We aimed to evaluate and compare resting energy expenditure (REE) and body composition between newborns who did or did not develop bronchopulmonary dysplasia. The resting energy expenditure and body composition were assessed at the corrected term age using air displacement plethysmography. Anthropometric measurements (weight, head circumference, and length) were performed and transformed into Z-scores per the Fenton curve (2013) at birth and corrected term age. Forty-two newborns were included, of which 26.2% developed bronchopulmonary dysplasia. Newborns with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) had significantly higher energy expenditure at corrected term age, with no differences in body composition between the two groups. Conclusion: Newborns with bronchopulmonary dysplasia had higher resting energy expenditure at the corrected term, with no difference in body composition compared to those who did not develop bronchopulmonary dysplasia.
