Background: The complex and variable pattern of the arterial arcades of the palm form an interesting area of study anatomically and surgically. In the present study arches were classified into complete and incomplete types, the complete type being the most prominent in 88.6% of the palms. Among the complete type, arch formed by ulnar artery alone supplying the thumb and index finger was found in majority of the specimens (50%). The classical or standard superficial palmar arch formed by the superficial palmar branch of radial and ulnar arteries was found in only 28.5%. Different patterns of the arterial arcades of the superficial palmar arch are normally encountered during routine anatomical dissections of the palm which needs to be emphasized and highlighted for a desired surgical out come during microvascular reconstructive surgeries of the palm and during radial artery cannulation. Context: With technological advancements in microsurgical procedures of the hand, fields of anatomical interest like the classification of arterial arcades of the palm, now becomes essential for operating vascular surgeons for a desired surgical outcome Purpose of the study: The present study was taken up to analyze and document varying patterns of the arterial arcades of the superficial palmar arch. Methods and Material: the study was conducted by dissecting 70 randomly obtained formalin fixed cadaver palms. Results: In the present study arches were classified into complete and incomplete types, the complete type being the most prominent in 88.6% of the palms. Among the complete type, arch formed by ulnar artery alone supplying the thumb and index finger was found in majority of the specimens (50%). The classical or standard superficial palmar arch formed by the superficial palmar branch of radial and ulnar arteries was found in only 28.5%. Out of the 70 hands, incomplete arches were found only in 8 hands with an incidence of 11.4%. Conclusion: Knowledge of arterial pattern of the hand is very important to vascular and reconstructive surgeons for effective treatment of injuries of the hand. Such a knowledge of the disposition of the arterial arcades of the palm also enables cardio-vascular surgeons to plan and modify surgical procedures such as radial artery harvesting, cannulation and in preventing the ischemia of hands in such procedures. KEY WORDS: Superficial palmar arch, Arterial arcades, Complete arch, Incomplete arch.

Abstract Background and purpose Bilateral carotid artery occlusion (CAO) is a rare condition and the collateral circulation is more complicated than in unilateral CAO. The circle of Willis (CoW) is the most important collateral circulation compensation pathway in CAO. However, the specific role of CoW in the collateral circulation compensation pathway of CAO has not been fully elucidated. The purpose of this study is to investigate the role of CoW in the collateral circulation compensation pathway of CAO. Materials and methods Clinical, imaging, and hemodynamic data of 30 patients with bilateral CAO were collected to analyze the collateral blood flow compensation pathway and its characteristics, and to examine the correlation between the structure of the CoW and the collateral circulation of bilateral CAO. Results This paper summarized 30 patients with bilateral CAO. There were 0 cases of the CoW complete type, 18 cases of the partially complete type (60%), and 12 cases of the incomplete type (40%). For the partially complete type cases, there were 14 complete anterior circulation cases (46.7%). The collateral circulation collateral circulation pathway included 14 cases with anterior communicating artery(ACoA), 7 cases with posterior cerebral artery (PCA)-middle cerebral artery (MCA) leptomeningeal anastomosis (LMA), 5 cases with ophthalmic artery(OA), 3 cases with lateral posterior communicating artery(PCoA), 1 case with internal carotid artery (ICA) stealing, 1 case with new Moyamoya vessels, and 4 cases of other types. There were four cases (13.3%) with complete posterior circulation, including four cases with bilateral PCoA, three cases with PCA-MCA LMA, and two cases with OA. There were 12 cases (40%) with incomplete CoW, including 8 cases with PCA-MCA LMA, 3 cases with lateral PCoA, 1 case with anterior cerebral artery (ACA)-MCA LMA, 4 cases with OA, and 1 other case. Conclusion The collateral circulation pathway differs among patients with different CoW structure types. When the CoW is partially complete, it mainly provides blood flow compensation to the ischemic area through primary collateral circulation. When the CoW is incomplete, it mainly provides blood flow compensation to the ischemic area through secondary collateral circulation.

Interleukin (IL)33, a member of the IL1 superfamily, functions as a nuclear factor and mediates biological effects by interacting with the ST2 receptor. Recent studies have described IL33 as an emerging pro-inflammatory cytokine in the immune system, and IL33/ST2 gene polymorphisms have been implicated in the pathogenesis of various immune diseases. However, the underlying mechanisms of IL33/ST2 in Behcet’s disease (BD) remain to be defined. Here, we investigated the association between IL33/ST2 gene polymorphisms and BD in 585 BD uveitis (BDU) patients and 834 healthy controls using Agena MassARRAY iPLEX platform. We found that rs3821204 was associated with the development of BDU. Moreover, the frequency of rs2210463 G allele was lower in patients with genital involvement. Association analysis revealed a much greater genetic difference between complete-type and incomplete-type BD groups, including three SNPs (rs7044343, rs1048274, and rs2210463). Our findings suggest that IL33/ST2 gene polymorphisms are involved in the pathogenesis of BDU. Different genetic backgrounds may exist in complete-type and incomplete-type BD patients.

Background: Discoid meniscus is a rare entity of knee pathology. The discoid meniscus can be encountered incidentally during a treatment of another knee pathology as an asymptomatic entity or can be a symptomatic pathology which warrant treatment Case presentation: There were 8 cases of symptomatic discoid meniscus reported in this retrospective case series. The symptoms presented at age range 16-47 year-old. Majority of the case (6 of 8) are lateral discoid meniscus with female gender predominant. Complete type of discoid meniscus was also found in 6 of 8 cases. There were 5 cases of ruptured discoid meniscus, three of them needed repair.  Conclusions: Symptomatic discoid meniscus can be presented on wide range of age of patients. We found female gender, discoid lateral meniscus, and complete type are the predominant pattern of discoid meniscus cases presentation.

Backgorund / Aim. In-depth knowledge of the vascular network of hand is of great importance in modern medicine. The main vessel of hand is the superficial palmar arch. As typically described in anatomical textbooks, it arises as terminal branch of the ulnar artery which then anastomoses with the superficial palmar branch of the radial artery. However, the superficial palmar arch is characterized by remarkable variability, which was the area of interest of many researchers so far. Comprehensive examination of the anatomy of the superficial palmar arch which included two parameters - the formation of the superficial palmar arch and its localization in relation to the topographic landmarks of the hand. Methods. Research was conducted on a total number of 14 cadavers. After careful dissection, variations and distance of the superficial palmar arch from Kaplan?s cardinal line were observed on the right hands. Collected data were then analyzed statistically in SPSS 11.0 using the Mann-Whitney U test, with the accepted level of statistical significance of p < 0.05. Results. According to Coleman and Anson classification, the higher incidence of incomplete type (57.14%) of the superficial palmar arch should be in comparison to complete type (42.86%). In addition to this, a statistically significant difference discovered in distance of the superficial palmar arch from Kaplan?s cardinal line between two groups with complete and incomplete types, respectively. The parameter examined in the group with complete type took the value of 2.13 ? 0.32 cm, while in the group with incomplete type measured 3.33 ? 0.87 cm. Conclusion. The present study showed a very important complexity in the domain of anatomy of the superficial palmar arch with numerous clinical implications. For that reason, a thorough evaluation of the hand circulatory system should be considered while planning surgical procedures in order to avoid operative and postoperative complications.

This article proposes and studies a new three-parameter generalized model of the inverse Gompertz distribution, in the so-called Kumaraswamy inverse Gompertz distribution. The main advantage of the new model is that it has "an upside down bathtub-shaped curve hazard rate function" depending upon the shape parameters. Several of its statistical and mathematical properties including quantiles, median, mode, moments, probability weighted moment, entropy function, skewness and kurtosis are derived. Moreover, the reliability and hazard rate functions, mean time to failure, mean residual and inactive lifetimes are also concluded. The maximum likelihood approach is done here to estimate the new model parameters. A simulation study is conducted to examine the performance of the estimators of this model. Finally, the usefulness of the proposed distribution is illustrated with different engineering applications to complete, type-II right censored, and upper record data and it is found that this model is more flexible when it is compared to well-known models in the statistical literature.

We present the (Lascar) Galois group of any countable theory as a quotient of a compact Polish group by an [Formula: see text] normal subgroup: in general, as a topological group, and under NIP, also in terms of Borel cardinality. This allows us to obtain similar results for arbitrary strong types defined on a single complete type over [Formula: see text]. As an easy conclusion of our main theorem, we get the main result of [K. Krupiński, A. Pillay and T. Rzepecki, Topological dynamics and the complexity of strong types, Israel J. Math. 228 (2018) 863–932] which says that for any strong type defined on a single complete type over [Formula: see text], smoothness is equivalent to type-definability. We also explain how similar results are obtained in the case of bounded quotients of type-definable groups. This gives us a generalization of a former result from the paper mentioned above about bounded quotients of type-definable subgroups of definable groups.
