The objective of this study is to examine the spread of cross-border trading in determining the firm's production in high-technology manufacturing industries in Indonesia. The spread of cross-border trading in the model is measured by export intensity and alternatively is measured by vertical trade integration. The firm-level data of high-tech industries are implemented in this study. A panel data regression procedure is applied to estimate the model. The estimation results elucidate that vertical trade integration is a significant determinant on affecting firm's production while export intensity is not. This evidence proves that the pattern of cross-border international trade of high-technology industries shifted from exporting finished goods to exporting fragmented products. The export intensity variable is no longer representing the international trade when the firms break-down their production process. The usage of export intensity variable in firms undertaking the vertical trade integration would lead to a misleading conclusion.

We explore the development of vertical specialization theory which is trade in goods across multiple stages of production on the relationship between trade and business cycle synchronization across countries. We study various papers about international trade model in which explores the degree of vertical specialization varying with trade barriers. We examine how and why these vertical specialization models created by economists and compare differences of those models. Since VS one of the most important changes involves the increasing interconnectedness of production processes in a vertical trading chain that stretches across many countries, with each country specializing in particular stages of a good’s production sequence. The purpose of the article is to form a theoretical and methodological basis for an economic retrospective of the development of the theory of vertical specialization. The subject of the research is theoretical and methodological aspects of the economic retrospective of the development of the theory of vertical specialization. Methods used in the study: historical method, methods of verification of theoretical positions (morphological analysis of the content and relationship of categories, principles and laws, assessment of the correspondence of historical facts to theoretical hypotheses), methods of analysis and synthesis, induction and deduction, logical method (hypothetical and axiomatic approaches), comparison method. Research hypothesis. In the context of global challenges, it is necessary to change the nature of interaction, for which it is necessary to form a theoretical and methodological basis for an economic retrospective of the development of the theory of vertical specialization. Presentation of the main material. Vertical specialization occurs when a country uses imported intermediate parts to produce goods that it later exports. This definition reflects the idea that countries are consistently linked to each other to produce the final good. The fulfillment of the conditions is justified: the product must be produced in several successive stages, two or more countries must specialize in the production of some, but not all, stages, and at least one stage must cross the international border more than once. It is emphasized that vertical specialization occurs when a country uses imported intermediate parts to produce goods that it later exports. Originality and practical significance of the research. The study of the economic retrospective of the development of the theory of vertical specialization includes four interrelated blocks – the theoretical and exploratory basis of interaction, the substantive (paradigmatic and methodological), applied and managerial basis of the interaction of business entities, which will allow comprehensively cover possible aspects of interaction. Conclusions of the study. The article examines the theoretical and methodological basis of vertical trade also connects the growth of international trade with an increase in international production. The forces that have driven increased vertical trade – lowering trade barriers and improving transport and communication technologies – are likely to persist. Thus, we can conclude that the value of VS and vertical trade in world trade will grow from year to year.

This study deals with firm level data of Indonesian high-tech manufacturing industries to determine firm’s production, especially among global trade variables, such as export intensity, vertical trade integration, and two-way trade. This study employs a generalized method of moments (GMM) approach to examine the most important factors of a global trade phenomenon. In the full-sample, the result demonstrates that vertical trade integration and two-way trade are significant determinants on firm’s production while export intensity is not. In ordinary trader sub-sample, export intensity is a significant determinant of firm’s production, whereas in vertical trader sub-sample export intensity is not. ...........................................

The aim of this paper was to investigate the intensity and determine the type of intra-industry trade in agri-food products of Poland and the EU with the US. Analysis was based on data coming from the Comext-Eurostat database applying the 6-digit HS classification in 2007 and 2018. The intensity of intra-industry trade was established using the Grubel-Lloyd index, taking the diversification of intra-industry trade into horizontal, high-quality vertical, and low-quality vertical trade into consideration. The individual types were determined applying the criteria of similarity in unit values in exports and imports, proposed by David Greenaway et al. [1994]. Analysis showed that trade in agri-food products of Poland and the EU with the US developed mainly following a model of inter-industry specialisation. Intra-industry trade was observed primarily in trade in highly processed products. Analyses of EU trade with the US indicate the greatest role of intra-industry trade in high quality differentiated products, which may hardly be supplemented by other goods, while in Polish trade with the US it was vertical trade in low quality goods, which may be relatively readily replaced by products coming from other countries, in turn potentially leading to the loss of Poland’s share in the target market.

This study aims to insvestigate the impact of vertical trade pattern as export intensity, vertical trade integration and two-way trade dummy to firm production capability. This study deals with firm level data of East Java high-tech manufacturing induesties, employs as generalized method of moments (GMM) approach to examine the most imprortant factor of a vertical trade phenomenom.
