AbstractEuropean chestnut (Castanea sativa) is threatened by the invasive fungus Cryphonectria parasitica, which causes chestnut blight. The virulence of the fungus can be reduced by a group of mycoviruses that can spread among vegetatively compatible strains through hyphal anastomosis. Hypovirulent isolates are used as biocontrol agents, but their efficiency can be diminished by restricted hyphal anastomosis if the variability of vegetative compatibility (vc) types in a population is high. Sexual reproduction could increase the vc type diversity and further complicate biocontrol in a region. Therefore, knowledge of genetic diversity of C. parasitica is important to assess the effectiveness of a biological control program. The present study was performed in the Autonomous Province of Bozen-Bolzano (South Tyrol) in northern Italy, where chestnut cultivation provides an additional income to farmers. The genetic characterization of C. parasitica isolates from 35 chestnut stands and one forest population in different districts of South Tyrol was performed based on the analysis of vegetative incompatibility loci, the mating type locus, and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region. In this study, a total of 23 different vc types were found all over South Tyrol with a Shannon diversity index of 1.86. EU-2, EU-1, and EU-13 were the most widespread vc types comprising 51%, 13%, and 9% of the fungal isolates, respectively. Both mating types were present in the region with a ratio close to 1:1. Three different haplotypes were identified based on ITS sequence analysis, which pointed to two introduction events of the fungus to the region and allowed placing C. parasitica from South Tyrol into a larger phylogeographic context.

Abstract In order to assess the impact of covid-19 on catholic pastoral care, an exploratory study was conducted in South Tyrol (Italy) by administering an online survey to parish priests and laypeople with an office within the local Diocese. With reference to the lockdown period, the research aimed to investigate: (1) how pastoral care was delivered; (2) changes in the use of ict within religious activities; and (3) the vision of the future for the Church in a mediatized world. Respondents believe that: (1) pastoral activities have slowed down, even though contact with the faithful was kept up through phone or the Internet; (2) the level of digitalization of the parishes has increased; however, the communication was mostly one-way and top-down. Finally, results show that (3) attitudes towards digital media are divergent: they are perceived as having the potential to either strengthen or weaken the relationship between the Church and the faithful.

This article discusses Lasa marble, a bright, white and weather-resistant stone quarried in South Tyrol, which in the course of the nineteenth century came to be considered equal, and even superior, to Carrara marble. Because of its quality, Lasa marble has been and continues to be exported worldwide. The article considers the ‘new Carrara’ in light of three art-historical topics: its rediscovery against the background of the intertwining of the young disciplines of geology and art history in the nineteenth century; its use and semantic quality in the context of the new buildings along the Ringstrasse in Vienna; and finally, the various projects for the establishment of artists’ colonies at the quarries of Laas, the declared objectives of which were rooted between monastic harmony and tourism-oriented calculation.

AbstractRecently, Cadophoraluteo-olivacea has been reported as a post-harvest pathogen of side rot of apple (Malusdomestica) in Latvia, and of pear (Pyruscommunis) in Italy and the Netherlands. In 2018 and 2019, in South Tyrol (northern Italy) 11 fungal cultures, identified as C.luteo-olivacea based on ITS (internal transcribed spacer region) sequence data, were obtained from apple fruit displaying post-harvest side rot symptoms. The fruit were sampled in packinghouses representing different apple growing areas of South Tyrol. For a more accurate taxonomic assignment, two additional molecular genetic loci, β-tubulin (TUB2) and translation elongation factor 1α (TEF-1α), of seven isolates were amplified and sequenced. Phylogenetic analysis based on multi-locus DNA sequence data confirmed that isolates from apple fruit with side rot symptoms indeed represented C.luteo-olivacea. A pathogenicity test performed on apple fruit of ‘Golden Delicious’ confirmed the virulence of a representative isolate. So far, C.luteo-olivacea represents a minor post-harvest pathogen of apple but considering the losses that this fungus can cause to other crops, the awareness about this potential apple disease should be raised.

A multivariate regression approach based on sensory data and chemical compositions has been applied to study the correlation between the sensory and chemical properties of Pinot Blanc wines from South Tyrol. The sensory properties were identified by descriptive analysis and the chemical profile was obtained by HS-SPME-GC/MS and HPLC. The profiles of the most influencing (positively or negatively) chemical components have been presented for each sensory descriptor. Partial Least Square Regression (PLS) and Principal Component Regression (PCR) models have been tested and applied. Visual (clarity, yellow colour), gustatory (sweetness, sourness, saltiness, bitterness, astringency, and warmness) and olfactory (overall intensity, floral, apple, pear, tropical fruit, dried fruit, fresh vegetative, spicy, cleanness, and off-odours) descriptors have been correlated with the volatile and phenolic profiles, respectively. Each olfactory descriptor was correlated via a PCR model to the volatile compounds, whereas a comprehensive PLS2 regression model was built for the correlation between visual/gustatory descriptors and the phenolic fingerprint. “Apple” was the olfactory descriptor best modelled by PCR, with an adjusted R2 of 0.72, with only 20% of the validation samples falling out of the confidence interval (α = 95%). A PLS2 with 6 factors was chosen as the best model for gustatory and visual descriptors related to the phenolic compounds. Finally, the overall quality judgment could be explained by a combination of the calibrated sensory descriptors through a PLS model. This allowed the identification of sensory descriptors such as “olfactory intensity”, “warmness”, “apple”, “saltiness”, “astringency”, “cleanness”, “clarity” and “pear”, which relevantly contributed to the overall quality of Pinot Blanc wines from South Tyrol, obtained with two different winemaking processes and aged in bottle for 18 months.

Temporary restorations play a fundamental role in oral rehabilitation. They can be used on teeth or implants for a variable period of time during the period prior to rehabilitation with definitive restorations. Temporary or provisional restorations manufactured via CAD/CAM methods are becoming increasingly used in the intermediate phase of the treatment of complex cases. The main objective of this study was to compare the fracture resistance of three materials used in the creation of provisional crowns on implants: polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), composite resin, and polyether ether ketone (PEEK). Fracture resistance in PMMA (Zirkonzahn Temp Basic® , Gais, South Tyrol, Italy) ranged from 1216.0 N to 1461.2 N, with a mean of 1300.4 N (SD = 97.09). In the composite material (3M Lava Ultimate®, Minnesota, USA), fracture resistance varied between 1343.5 N and 1490.6 N, with a mean of 1425.9 N (SD = 49.03). Lastly, in PEEK (Tecno Med Mineral®, Zirkonzahn®, Gais, South Tyrol, Italy), fracture resistance ranged from 2294.8 N to 2451.7 N, with a mean of 2359.5 (SD = 50.01). The crowns made with the PEEK Tecno Med Mineral® (Zirkonzahn®, Tyrol, Italy) material presented the best fracture resistance, followed by the crowns made with the Lava Ultimate® (3M® ESPE, Minnesota, USA) composite resin material and, finally, those made with the PMMA Temp Basic® (Zirkonzahn®, Tyrol, Italy) material.
