A close reading of two The Last Kingdom (2015–) fan fics hashtagged #NotMyBrexit, "One England" by BigHeartBigFart and "Under One Kingdom" by Honiejar (both 2019), shows that both authors use the (mediated character of) real-world King Alfred of Wessex (849–899) to comment on the Brexit transitional era. The authors mix contemporary references with historical associations to advocate for unity.

This chapter examines the contemporary Irish identity and social reactions to the process of cultural hybridization, as they are depicted in the late Viking-Age narrative Cath Maige Tuired. The tale is a product of a transitional era whose preoccupations and prejudices are reflected in the narrative representations of the Fomoiri and the Tuatha Dé Danann. This chapter considers Cath Maige Tuired within its historical context as a narrative of hybridity in which the pivotal cultural identities are built on an ongoing comparison between the tale’s representations of the Self and the Other. At the same time the narrative illustrates a number of other cultural concerns at the forefront of the collective intellectual consciousness.

Abstract As a complementary condition to narrative, the notion of pictorialism in film is rooted in the first decades of the medium. In their quest to demonstrate the capturing and restoring of images with various devices, early filmmakers selected views with pictorial qualities in the long-standing tradition of painting, transferring them on film in the form of non-narrative shots. The evolution of fictional narratives in silent cinema displaced the source of inspiration in theatre, assimilating its nineteenth-century tradition of pictorialism. Thus, the film audiences’ appeal for visual pleasure was elevated with balanced elements of composition, framing and acting that resulted in pictorially represented moments actively engaged in the narrative system. The paper explores the notion of “pictorial spirit” (Valkola 2016) in relation to that of “monstration” (Gaudreault 2009) aiming to describe the narrative mechanism of provoking fear by means of pictorially constructed cinematic images in a selection of short-length horror silent films belonging to the transitional era, consisting in The Haunted House/The Witch House (La Maison ensorcelée/La casa encantada, Segundo de Chomón, 1908), Frankenstein (J. Searle Dawley, 1910) and the surviving fragments of The Portrait (Портрет, Vladislav Starevich, 1915).1

The essay focuses on the problem of national identity in the modern fairy tale for adult audience, on the example of texts by modern Russian writers (Alexander Kabakov, Andrey Stepanov, and Dmitry Glukhovsky). After analyzing what is common and what is different in the poetics of the fairy tales by the mentioned authors, as well as the strategies of portraying modern Russia in the transition period of Perestroika, I discuss the theme of the national identity in these texts and its meaning. The paper also highlights the properties of the contemporary fairy tale that addresses topical issues of the day. One of such properties is the national question, another one is the so-called “eternal question” concerning Russian civilization and its choice between the East and the West.

Government policies both in fiscal and monetary terms are the foundation of economic growth. Good governance will get good results. Above all, there is the Islamic Sharia which in turn brings the economy to its own balance. Like that happened in Bengkalis last time. The faith, piety and patience of the Muslim community make Bengkalis not only prosperous, but it is also safe and secure until today. In the 1980-1990 decade, as is commonly known, it was a transitional era in all aspects of life, and in many places, the same phenomena were found. Like the difficulty of life, inadequate infrastructure, lack of transportation and so forth, in essence, provide lessons for later generations to always be grateful to Allah for all the abundance of grace and blessings of Allah.

This chapter considers the impact of the 1933 studio restructuring that effectively demoted Thalberg from head of production to unit producer. In response, Thalberg would set out affirmations of his production ethos in private letters and a public article. In the case of the latter, Thalberg conceives of “the intelligent producer” who spares no creative or monetary expense in crafting entertainment – and in this way, Thalberg constructs an alternative to the Boy Wonder double that had shadowed him since the start of his career. The chapter argues that these personal and public statements present a theoretical turning point at which Thalberg reflected – and expanded – upon established concepts to conceive of a new future for production. The chapter explores how this transitional era played out in Thalberg’s films of the period, looking at Strange Interlude (Leonard, 1932), The Barretts of Wimpole Street (Franklin, 1934), and The Merry Widow (Lubitsch, 1934).
