The paper presents a miscellany of unorthodox and, in some cases, paradoxical or controversial items related to computational and applied electromagnetics. The topics include a definition of the magnetic source field via a line integral, losses in electric power transmission vs. losses in photonics, homogenization of periodic electromagnetic structures, spurious modes, models of plasmonic media, and more. It is hoped that this assortment of subjects will be of interest to a broad audience of scientists and engineers.

Micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) bandpass filters based on arrays of electrostatically driven coupled beams have been demonstrated at MHz frequencies. High performance follows from the high Q-factor of mechanical resonators, and electrostatic transduction allows tuning, matching and actuation. For high-order filters, there is a conflict between the transduction mechanism and the coupling arrangement needed for dynamic synchronization: it is not possible to achieve synchronization and tuning simultaneously using a single voltage. Here we propose a general solution, based on the addition of mass-loaded beams at the ends of the array. These beams deflect for direct current (DC) voltages, and therefore allow electrostatic tuning, but do not respond to in-band alternating current (AC) voltages and hence do not interfere with synchronization. Spurious modes generated by these beams may be damped, leaving a good approximation to the desired response. The approach is introduced using a lumped element model and verified using stiffness matrix and finite element models for in-plane arrays with parallel plate drives and shown to be tolerant of the exact mass value. The principle may allow compensation of fabrication-induced variations in complex filters.

AbstractStepped impedance resonator (SIR) and its derivative resonators are widely used in the design of microwave filters. However, many spurious modes will be introduced into the stopband, resulting in lower upper stopband suppression and performance degradation. Based on the principle of slit line, a method to enhance the upper stopband suppression is proposed and verified by a miniaturized tri-notched wideband bandpass filter based on stub loaded ring resonator (SLRR) and shorted-stub loaded SIR (SSLSIR). The wideband is formed by coupling SLRR and interdigital lines, which has a rectangular DGS on the back of the substrate. Three notched bands with controllable positions in the passband can be produced by inserting two different SSLSIRs inside and outside the SLRR. Four slit lines are loaded on the low impedance stub of SSLSIR to adjust the high-order modes close to the transmission zeros (TZs). The operating frequency of the filter is 2.2–7.6 GHz, and the three notched bands are located at 2.97 GHz, 5.75 GHz and 6.46 GHz, respectively. The measurement results show that the − 20 dB enhanced upper stopband of the filter can reach 32 GHz, which proves that the filter has the characteristic of ultrawide upper stopband suppression while keeping the miniaturization.

In this work, lateral-field-excitation (LFE) piezoelectric sensors based on polarity inversion layer are designed and fabricated, then frequency stabilities and sensitivities on electric property changes of liquids are tested. Because the polarity inversion layer can suppress the spurious modes, the stabilities of the LFE devices with a polarity inversion layer are obviously better than that of LFE devices with no polarity inversion layer. On the changes of liquid conductivity and permittivity, the sensitivities of the LFE devices with a polarity inversion layer are 2.4 times and 2.1 times higher than that of LFE devices with no polarity inversion layer, respectively. The polarity inversion layer of the lithium niobate crystal plate can be realized conveniently by heat treatment, therefore, the technology of the polarity inversion layer can play an important role in improving the sensing performances of LFE sensors.

Abstract: Automated operational modal analysis (OMA) is attractive and has been extensively used to replace traditional OMA, which involves much empirical observation and engineers’ judgment. However, the uncertainties on modal parameters and spurious modes are still challenging to estimate under the field conditions. For addressing this challenge, this research proposed an automated modal identification approach. The proposed approach consists of two steps: (1) modal analysis using covariance-driven stochastic subspace algorithm (SSI-cov/ref); (2) automated interpretation of the stabilization diagram. An additional uncertainty criterion is employed to initially remove as many spurious modes as possible. A novel threshold calculation for clustering is proposed with incorporating uncertainty of modal parameters and the weighting factor. An improved self-adaptive clustering with new distance calculation is used to group physical modes, followed by the final step of robust outlier detection to select outlying modes. The proposed automated approach requires minimum human intervention. Two field tests of the footbridge and a post-tensioned concrete bridge are used to verify the proposed approach. A modal tracking was used for continuously measured data for demonstrating the applicability of the approach. Results show the proposed approach has fairly good performance and be suitable for automated OMA and long-term health monitoring.
