The main purpose of this work is to investigate the effect of benzoyl treatment on the performance of sugar palm/kenaf fiber-reinforced polypropylene hybrid composites. Water absorption tests were carried out to confirm the effect of benzoylation treatment toward fabricating a more hydrophobic behavior of the hybrid composites. Both treated and untreated composites that have 10 wt.% of fiber loading with three different fiber ratios between sugar palm and kenaf (7:3, 5:5, 3:7) were analyzed. Physical and mechanical properties such as tensile, flexural, and impact strength were determined from this study. Morphological properties were obtained using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was found that the tensile strength of sugar palm/kenaf-reinforced polypropylene hybrid composites was improved with the treatment of benzoyl with a value of 19.41 MPa. In addition, hybrid composite with treated sugar palm and kenaf fiber T-SP3K7 recorded the highest impact and flexural strength of 19.4 MPa and 18.4 MPa, respectively. In addition, SEM demonstrated that surface treatment enhanced the mechanical properties of the hybrid composites. Overall, it can be suggested that benzoyl-treated composites with a higher volume of kenaf fiber than sugar palm fiber will improve the mechanical characteristics of the hybrid composites.

In this work, a modified Bosch etching process is developed to create silicon nanowires. Au nanoparticles (NPs) formed by magnetron sputtering film deposition and thermal annealing were employed as the hard mask to achieve controllable density and high aspect ratios. Such silicon nanowire exhibits the excellent anti-reflection ability of a reflectance value of below 2% within a broad light wave range between 220 and 1100 nm. In addition, Au NPs-induced surface plasmons significantly enhance the near-unity anti-reflection characteristics, achieving a reflectance below 3% within the wavelength range of 220 to 2600 nm. Furthermore, the nanowire array exhibits super-hydrophobic behavior with a contact angle over ~165.6° without enforcing any hydrophobic chemical treatment. Such behavior yields in water droplets bouncing off the surface many times. These properties render this silicon nanowire attractive for applications such as photothermal, photocatalysis, supercapacitor, and microfluidics.

Polyethylene terephthalate is one of the important synthetic ester polymeric material used in widespread areas.  In textile industry, this fibrous material finds use in most of the garment and apparel applications due to its ease of handling, maintenance, and drying and competes with cotton materials.  However, due to the maximum hydrophobic behavior, this textile material gives number of issues like accumulation of statics, negligible moisture content, poor comfort and aesthetic characters.  Hence, in order to use this polyester material in the general textile industries particularly for garment and apparel productions, it is necessary to increase to some extent of its hydrophilic character by the application of some suitable chemicals like polyvinyl alcohol.  In these context, in this work an attempt is made to treat the polyethylene terephthalate fabric with sodium hydroxide followed by polyvinyl alcohol so as to increase the aesthetic properties.  The output received after the polyvinyl alcohol treatment on this fabric gives the good results expected for the garment applications.

New thermoset composite material made from cardanol-based resin blended with microfibrillar cellulose was compared to petroleum-based vinyl ester and glass-fiber-reinforced unsaturated polyester in terms of mechanical, thermal, rheological and surface properties of produced polymers and composites. The bio-sourced material was less resistant than the commercial vinyl ester but comparable to the unsaturated polyester resin. Microfibrillar cellulose increased the tensile strength and modulus but increased the resin viscosity and decreased the mixture homogeneity. The bio-sourced and commercial resins displayed similar hydrophobic behavior, and cellulose slightly decreased composite hydrophobicity. The glass transition temperature of the bio-sourced material was comparable to that of the unsaturated polyester. Thermal decompositions of composites and thermoset polymers were also similar. Cellulose and cardanol thus may be adequate as sustainable components in the composite materials industry.

Novel hybrid materials with integrated catalytic properties and hydrophobic response, C@Fe–Al2O3 hybrid samples, were presented and tested as catalysts for phenol reaction in aqueous solutions at atmospheric pressure and mild temperature conditions, using CO2 as a feedstock. A series of carbon-coated γ-alumina pellets (C@Fe–Al2O3) were synthesized and characterized by TGA, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) method, Raman spectroscopy, SEM, TEM, and XPS in order to get comprehensive knowledge of their properties at the nanoscale and relate them with their catalytic behavior. The results obtained correlated their catalytic activities with their carbon surface compositions. The application of these materials as active catalysts in the Kolbe–Schmitt reaction for CO2 conversion in aqueous media was proposed as an alternative reaction for the valorization of exhausts industrial effluents. In these early tests, the highest conversion of phenol was observed for the hybrid samples with the highest graphitic characteristic and the most hydrophobic behavior. Carboxylation products such as benzoic acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, and salicylic acid, have been identified under these experimental conditions.
