Abstract Propagation of high-intensity electromagnetic waves in a waveguide structure could initiate nonlinear effects resulting in drastic changes of their spatial and temporal characteristics. We study the modulation instability effect induced by propagation of surface plasmon polaritons in a silver thin-film waveguide. The nonlinear Schrodinger equation for propagating surface plasmon wave is obtained. It is shown numerically that the modulation instability effect can give rise to ultrafast spatial redistribution and longitudinal localization of surface plasmon-polariton wave energy in subwavelength scale. The dependence of plasmon wave dispersion and nonlinear characteristics on metal film thickness is considered. We demonstrate that the use of films with the thickness varying along the waveguide length allows reduction of the generated pulse width and increase of frequency comb bandwidth. The proposed technique is promising for design of ultra-compact (tens of nm) optical generators delivering pulse trains with the repetition rate higher than 1THz.

Abstract The hourglass instability effect is characteristic of the Wilkins explicit difference scheme or similar schemes based on two-dimensional 4-node or three-dimensional 8-node finite elements with one integration point in the element. The hourglass effect is absent in schemes with cells in the form of simplexes (triangles in two-dimensional case, tetrahedrons in three-dimensional case). But they have another well-known drawback - slow convergence. One of the authors proposed a rare mesh scheme, in which elements in the form of a tetrahedron are located one at a time in the centers of the cells of a hexahedral grid. This scheme showed the absence “hourglass” effect and other drawbacks with high efficiency. This approach was further developed for solving 2D and 3D problems.

Using the model based on the Regge-like laws, new analytical formulas are obtained for the moment of inertia, the rotation frequency, and the radius of astronomical non-exotic objects (planets, stars, galaxies, and clusters of galaxies). The rotation frequency and moment of inertia of a neutron star and the observable Universe are estimated. The estimates of the average numbers of stars and galaxies in the observable Universe are given. The Darwin instability effect in the binary systems (di-planets, di-stars, and di-galaxies) is also analyzed.

A damping ring system which includes a small 1.1 GeV ring and two transport lines is introduced in CEPC linac in order to reduce the transverse emittance of positron beam at the end of linac and hence reduce the beam loss in the booster. This paper introduces the parameter choice and optics study of damping ring. The corresponding instability effect and IBS effect are also checked to make sure the design current and design emittance can be realized. Except for damping ring, two transport lines are needed to match the parameters between linac and damping ring. Both designs for energy compressor and bunch compressor including beam simulations are discussed in this paper.
