Taina: Una Novela makes strong statements about how social justice, individual determination, education, and compassion can overcome urban poverty.  The main character, Julio is a half Ecuadorian/half Puerto Rican teenager who was born and raised in East Harlem.  He has good grades and aspires to get into Princeton University. Julio gets the support he needs for his future from his parents and a couple of good teachers from his school.  Clearly, Quiñonez makes an important statement as an educator on the things that are needed to deal with issues of urban poverty. Julio ends up believing Taina, a girl marginalized by the whole neighborhood, has an immaculate pregnancy.  Taina and her mother are poor, and Julio does criminal acts to support her and her mother.  Quiñonez explores the effects of marginalization on mental health, as Taina and her mother become crude, hostile people in their isolation from society.

This article will carry out an analysis on the practice of Euthanasia, going through its etymology, historical scenario, principles involved, as well as its understanding in our legal system and social context. In addition, an analysis of a real case in Brazil and a comparison with other countries where the practice is legal is made. This article is mainly aimed at minimally elucidating the controversy surrounding the topic, which is still very stigmatized in our country, since it involves several principles not only of law, but of religion and medicine, making a comparison between them. For the realization of this article, bibliographic research had been carried out through articles, legal sites and news sites, using deductive methodology for its understanding and outcome. There is a great taboo on the subject in our country, given that it can have different types of understanding according to the individual determination of each one, with much debate still remaining so that, finally, sick patients have the right to put their lives the best way possible.

The different activity and toxicity that the enantiomers of agrochemicals may have requires the development of stereoselective analytical methodologies enabling the individual determination of each enantiomer. The aim of this work was to develop the first Electrokinetic Chromatography methodology enabling the simultaneous enantiomeric separation of carfentrazone-ethyl herbicide and its hydrolysis metabolite carfentrazone. The use of an anionic cyclodextrin as chiral selector (captisol at 2.5% (w/v)) in a 25 mM acetate buffer, at a temperature of 30 °C, and an applied voltage (reverse polarity) of −30 kV, allowed the simultaneous separation of the four enantiomers of the two compounds studied in 6.8 min with enantiomeric resolutions of 5.0 for carfentrazone-ethyl and 5.1 for carfentrazone. Analytical characteristics of the developed method were evaluated and found adequate to achieve the quantitation of carfentrazone-ethyl and carfentrazone. Analysis of a commercial herbicide formulation showed the potential of the method for the quality control of these agrochemical products. Degradation studies for carfentrazone-ethyl revealed that no significant degradation took place in cleaned sand samples while a significant but not stereoselective degradation took place in soils for the whole period of time considered (seven days).

The School District of Osceola County, Florida, invests heavily in the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program, and as such, an evaluation of effects was conducted with a sample of 10 middle schools (12,325 students) and 7 high schools (18,886 students). Propensity matching was used to determine practical effects. Providing schoolwide AVID was correlated with higher school grades in the Florida accountability system, and students in the elective were found to have statistically significantly higher GPAs, higher learning gains scores, greater enrollment in acceleration, and a higher likelihood of receiving college scholarships.

The use of dental support as orthodontic anchorage, used in conventional corrective orthodontic treatment, may interfere in the proper functioning of the applied mechanics, because the teeth that are used as support may suffer displacement. Nowadays, the use of miniimplants, among them buccal-shelf, has been increasingly used, as they reduce the chances of possible side effects resulting from the mechanics, because the support ceases to be dental and becomes skeletal. Despite low failure rate, according to the literature, difficulty of access and individual determination of the best area of installation of this type of miniscrew should be thoroughly evaluated, in addition to verification of bone conditions, thus avoiding the risk of poor insertion. This article presents a case of installation of an extra-alveolar miniscrew buccal-shelf type in which the device ended up being inserted in an inadequate trajectory, causing an acute inflammatory process. After removal of the extra-alveolar mini-screw, a new installation was performed guided by cone-beam computed tomography, and the orthodontic treatment was successfully concluded.

ABSTRACT We show that it is not possible to determine the final mass Mfin of a red supergiant (RSG) at the pre-supernova (SN) stage from its luminosity L and effective temperature Teff alone. Using a grid of stellar models, we demonstrate that for a given value of L and Teff, an RSG can have a range of Mfin as wide as 3 to 45 M⊙. While the probability distribution within these limits is not flat, any individual determination of Mfin for an RSG will be degenerate. This makes it difficult to determine its evolutionary history and to map Mfin to an initial mass. Single stars produce a narrower range that is difficult to accurately determine without making strong assumptions about mass-loss, convection, and rotation. Binaries would produce a wider range of RSG Mfin. However, the final Helium core mass $M_{\operatorname{He-core}}$ is well determined by the final luminosity and we find $\log (M_{\operatorname{He-core}}/\mathrm{M}_{\odot }) = 0.659 \log (L/\mathrm{L}_{\odot }) -2.630$. Using this relationship, we derive $M_{\operatorname{He-core}}$ for directly imaged SN progenitors and one failed SN candidate. The value of Mfin for stripped star progenitors of SNe IIb is better constrained by L and Teff due to the dependence of Teff on the envelope mass Menv for Menv ≲ 1 M⊙. Given the initial mass function, our results apply to the majority of progenitors of core-collapse SNe, failed SNe, and direct-collapse black holes.
