In this paper, the fracture behaviors of 316L stainless steel with defects fabricated by the Selective Laser Melting (SLM) additive manufacturing are studied by a peridynamic method. Firstly, the incremental formulations in the peridynamic framework are presented for the elastic-plastic problems. Then, the pairwise force of a bond for orthotropic material model is proposed according to both the local and the global coordinate systems. A simple three-step approach is developed to describe the void defects that generated in the processing of the SLM additive manufacturing in the numerical model. Next, some representative numerical examples are carried out, whose results explain the validation and accuracy of the present method, and demonstrate that the orthotropic features, micro-cracks and voids of the materials have a significant influence on the ultimate bearing capacity, crack propagation and branching of the corresponding structures. It is also revealed that the crack initiations are induced actively by the defects and the crack branching is contributed to the complex multiple-crack propagation. Finally, the achievements of this paper lay a foundation for the engineering applications of the SLM additive manufacturing materials.

Abstract After a long-term operation of the turbine runner chamber, there may be voids between the steel lining and the concrete. If it is not discovered and treated in time, the safe and stable operation of the unit will be affected. In engineering practice, the hammering method is often used to detect hole defects, and the accuracy is low. The neutron detection technology is proposed to detect the void defects of the steel lining, quantitatively display the void location and size, and improve the accuracy of void defect detection.

Voids are common defects in 3D woven composites because of the complicated manufacturing processes of the composites. In this study, a micro–meso multiscale analysis was conducted to evaluate the influence of voids on the mechanical properties of three-dimensional orthogonal woven composites. Statistical analysis was implemented to calculate the outputs of models under the different scales. A method is proposed to generate the reasonable mechanical properties of the microscale models considering randomly distributed voids and fiber filaments. The distributions of the generated properties agree well with the calculated results. These properties were utilized as inputs for the mesoscale models, in which void defects were also considered. The effects of these defects were calculated and investigated. The results indicate that tensile and shear strengths were more sensitive to the microscale voids, while the compressive strength was more influenced by mesoscale voids. The results of this study can provide a design basis for evaluating the quality of 3D woven composites with void defects.

In this paper, we present a multi-domain implicit surface reconstruction algorithm for geological modeling based on the labeling of voxel points. The improved algorithm sets a label for each voxel point to represent the type of its geological domain and then obtains all the voxel points in the void areas. After that, the improved algorithm modifies the labels of the voxel points in the void areas and finally reconstructs the geological models through the Multiple Material Marching Cubes (M3C) algorithm. The improved algorithm solves the problems of some unexpected overlaps and voids in geological modeling by setting and modifying the labels of the voxel points. Our key contribution is proposing a labeling processing method to repair the overlap and void defects generated in the geological modeling and realizing the improved M3C algorithm. The experimental results of some geological models show the performance of the improved method. Compared with the original method, the improved method can repair the overlap and void defects in geological modeling to ensure the raw structural adjacency relationships of the geological bodies.

Void defects can be easily generated between a steel plate and concrete joint due to the complicated internal structure of a sandwich-structured immersed tunnel (SSIT), which affect the overall bearing capacity of the main structure of the immersed tube tunnel. A prototype experiment was conducted to study the application of impact imaging method in the nondestructive detection of void defects in SSITs. The detection criterion for the impact imaging method was established based on the features of the waveform data. Nevertheless, the influence of steel plate thickness, material properties, void location, and structure on the detection accuracy of the impact imaging method is unclear. Therefore, numerical simulation was applied to study the influencing factors by establishing a different condition model. Good agreement between the experimental and numerical results was observed for the response waveform collected from the inspection area. Using the calculation model and identified material parameters validated in the active prototype experiment, numerical simulations of several sets, which considered all influencing factors, were performed. The application scope and sensitivity of the impact image method were recommended to reduce misjudgement in practical applications and improve detection accuracy.
