Abstract The purpose of this study is to improve the properties of the feedstocks and shape retention of debinded parts by the reaction between 17-4PH stainless steel powders. Carboxyl-terminated hyperbranched polyester (CTHP) and epoxy-terminated hyperbranched polyester (ETHP) were used to treat the powders, and termed as CTHP-m and ETHP-m with carboxyl and epoxy group, respectively. Comparing with pristine, CTHP-m and ETHP-m, feedstock prepared from equal amount of CTHP-m and ETHP-m (CTHP-m/ETHP-m) possessed more excellent properties. The experimental results showed that the critical solids loading, flexural modulus, density and melt flow index of CTHP-m/ETHP-m feedstock were 63.8 vol.%, 2800 Mpa, 5.06 g/cm3 and 62 g/10min, respectively, which were obviously higher than that of others. Also, the shape retention of CTHP-m/ETHP-m debinded parts was the best of all the samples. The improved properties of CTHP-m/ETHP-m feedstock were attributed to the powder interaction between CTHP-m and ETHP-m formed by the chemical reaction between epoxy and carboxyl group.

Liquid crystalline hyperbranched poly(aryl ester)s (A2B3) were prepared by polycondensation reaction of 2-(6-oxido-6H-dibenz<c,e><1,2>oxaphosphorin-6-yl)1,4-naphthalene diol with 1,3,5-benzenetricarbonyl trichloride, taken in two different molar ratios. The chemical structure of the newly synthesized hyperbranched polymers was confirmed by FTIR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR spectroscopy. The polymers exhibited high thermal stability with initial decomposition temperature above 410–435°C and char yield at 700°C higher than 40%. Combined differential scanning calorimetry, polarized optical microscopy and wide-angle X-ray diffraction measurements were carried out to closely examine their thermal behavior and phase transitions.

A homologous series of hyperbranched polyesters (HBPEs) was successfully synthesized via an esterification reaction of 2,2-bis(methylol)propionic acid (bis-MPA) with pentaerythritol. The molecular weights of the HBPEs were 2160, 2660, 4150 and 5840 g/mol, respectively. These HBPEs were used as additives to prepare polysulfone (PSf) hollow fiber membranes via non-solvent induced phase separation. The characteristic behaviors of the casting solution were investigated, as well as the morphologies, hydrophilicity and mechanical properties of the PSf membranes. The results showed that the initial viscosities of the casting solutions were increased, and the shear-thinning phenomenon became increasingly obvious. The demixing rate first increased and then decreased when increasing the HBPE molecular weight, and the turning point was 2660 g/mol. The PSf hollow fiber membranes with different molecular weights of HBPEs had a co-existing morphology of double finger-like and sponge-like structures. The starting pure water contact angle decreased obviously, and the mechanical properties improved.

In a century when environmental pollution is a major issue, polymers issued from bio-based monomers have gained important interest, as they are expected to be environment-friendly, and biocompatible, with non-toxic degradation products. In parallel, hyperbranched polymers have emerged as an easily accessible alternative to dendrimers with numerous potential applications. Glycerol (Gly) is a natural, low-cost, trifunctional monomer, with a production expected to grow significantly, and thus an excellent candidate for the synthesis of hyperbranched polyesters for pharmaceutical and biomedical applications. In the present article, we review the synthesis, properties, and applications of glycerol polyesters of aliphatic dicarboxylic acids (from succinic to sebacic acids) as well as the copolymers of glycerol or hyperbranched polyglycerol with poly(lactic acid) and poly(ε-caprolactone). Emphasis was given to summarize the synthetic procedures (monomer molar ratio, used catalysts, temperatures, etc.,) and their effect on the molecular weight, solubility, and thermal and mechanical properties of the prepared hyperbranched polymers. Their applications in pharmaceutical technology as drug carries and in biomedical applications focusing on regenerative medicine are highlighted.
