Spatial Identification and Redevelopment Evaluation of Brownfields in the Perspective of Urban Complex Ecosystems: A Case of Wuhu City, China

Rapid industrialization and urbanization in China have led to a rapid increase in the number of brownfields, however there is a lack of identification of the spatial extent of brownfields in cities and accurate assessment of brownfield redevelopment. Based on the relationship between brownfields and urban complex ecosystems, this paper defines brownfields in China and constructs a comprehensive evaluation index system including socio-economic and ecological subsystems. Using Wuhu City as empirical evidence, 19 brownfields were identified using remote sensing data and field surveys. Based on the detection of soil contaminants in brownfields, a fuzzy integrated evaluation method was used to suggest their redevelopment direction. It is found that the government’s planned land use types and the brownfield redevelopment evaluation results match to a large extent, but social, economic and ecological environmental factors should be more fully considered. At the same time, the identification and redevelopment of brownfield sites in the city as a whole need to be carried out by the government’s professional forces in order to obtain more effective and scientific conclusions.

Research progress of sustainable brownfield redevelopment planning and design: Based on visual bibliometric analysis

Environmental and urban sciences have shown that brownfield problems have a significant impact on human behavior and its environment. Understanding the sustainable planning and redevelopment of brownfields can therefore help governments and financial partners to consider sustainable urban policies as a key priority. This study presents a bibliometric analysis of research publications on the sustainable redevelopment of brownfields through the Scopus database since 1990. The redevelopment of brownfields having an essential role in urban sustainability, so research trends on sustainable redevelopment brownfields in previous literature are revealed. To our knowledge, the bibliometric analysis of the term sustainable redevelopment of brownfields is not yet an accentuated field of research. To do this, this study aims to fill this gap by offering a broad overview of the bibliometric analysis of the literature relating to this term. Brownfield and contaminated land are used as a keyword in the article titles taken from the Scopus database on September 07, 2021. A total of 7197 scientific articles (Scopus) were reviewed to show how the research on " brownfields or contaminated land” has emerged and developed. Social media analysis (VOSviewer) was used for data visualization and Harzing's Publish or Perish is used for metrics and citation analysis. The results showed an increase in the growth rate of the literature on sustainable brownfield redevelopment since 1990, particularly from 2011 to 2020. Research related to the sustainable redevelopment of brownfields has involved various authors and is published in various languages. There are 160 authors from 126 countries and 160 institutions. The China is the largest contributor to this study, followed by the United States and United Kingdom. The Chemosphere Journal has published the most articles on the sustainable redevelopment of brownfields. Although our results also indicate that studies on the sustainable redevelopment of brownfields are mainly carried out in the field of environmental sciences. Some avenues for future research have been analyzed in three directions so that sustainable development can easily be integrated into a brownfield redevelopment project.

Reshaping the Gdańsk Shipyard—The Birthplace of the Solidarity Movement. The Complexity of Adaptive Reuse in the Heritage Context

The Gdańsk Shipyard—the birthplace of the Solidarity movement—is host to a unique example of a multi-layered brownfield redevelopment project, an area that is burdened by a complex history, overlapping heritage, and multiple memories. These circumstances require an integrated yet differentiated approach to the site’s heritage and make the creation of one homogeneous narration of its future impossible. At the same time, the size of the area, as well as its location within Gdańsk city centre, has meant that its future has been the subject of numerous discussions and speculations conducted over the last 20 years—starting from the creation of a large-scale open-air museum and continuing to the localization of the new Central Business District of the city. Consequently, that broad discussion carried out regarding the scope of redevelopment projects has been rooted in the possible introduction of diverse models of adaptive reuse. This variety of possible approaches also includes discussion on the mode of integrating heritage in the redevelopment processes. The goal of this paper—written just before the initiation of the final stage of the conceptual part of the project—is to present the complexity of approaches to issues related to redevelopment and heritage preservation.

An evaluation of Ontario public health units' practices in the redevelopment of brownfields

The revitalization of brownfields provides many health benefits. Revitalization addresses historical contamination and it allows to re-design the community with health in mind. It is recognized that public health units (PHUs) have an important role to play on brownfield sites. Information suggests that Ontario PHUs often become involved on brownfield sites but the extend of that involvement is not known. Ontario PHUs were surveyed about their involvement on brownfield sites. The results indicate that most Ontario PHUs engage in brownfield redevelopment to some extent. Public health units identified inadequate resources, expertise, and lack of training as the most critical factors affecting their response. Results of the survey were further compared with the ATSDR Brownfields/Land Revitalization Action Model. This critical analysis helped to identify key gaps and weaknesses in the current Ontario practices. The results are used to propose recommendations to enhance public health practice and to maximize community health benefits.

Brownfield redevelopment, because of its contributions to urban sustainability, intensification and environmental quality, has become a critical issue in urban development literature of late. Through case-study research this paper aims to evaluate the relative sustainability of four Port Lands brownfield redevelopments that involve converting brownfields into green space in the City of Toronto. This study has shown how brownfield redevelopment and more specifically, turning brownfields into green space represent an application of all three pillars of sustainability. However, the exact extent of how this type of redevelopment represents an application of sustainable development cannot be truly measured or quantified. It has also highlighted the need to develop a comprehensive set of sustainability indicators that can be specifically applied to projects that aim to convert brownfields into green space.

Brownfield redevelopment : a case study of the Lakeview waterfront revitalization in Mississauga

This research paper is a case study examining the development of the Vision for the Ontario Power Generation lands in Lakeview. The interests if stakeholders such as the City of Mississauga, the Lakeview residents, the Region of Peel, the Province of Ontario, Credit Valley Conservation, as well as the Toronto and Region Conservation will be discussed. The importance of the history of Lakeview, the public consulation process, the project structure, as well as the next steps will be critically talked about in detail. This purpose of this paper is t provide other municipalities with recommendations on brownfield redevelopment and thus give them a better understanding of things to consider and potential roadblocks and challenges that could arise.
