Individual insects flying in crowded assemblies perform complex aerial maneuvers by sensing and feeding back neighbor measurements to small changes in their wing motions. To understand the individual feedback rules that permit these fast, adaptive behaviors in group flight, a high-speed tracking system is needed capable of tracking both body motions and more subtle wing motion changes for multiple insects in simultaneous flight. This capability extends tracking beyond the previous focus on individual insects to multiple insects. This paper presents Hi-VISTA, which provides a capability to track wing and body motions of multiple insects using high speed cameras (9000 fps). Processing steps consist of automatic background identification, data association, hull reconstruction, segmentation, and feature measurement. To improve the biological relevance of laboratory experiments and develop a platform for interaction studies, this paper applies the Hi-VISTA measurement system to Apis mellifera foragers habituated to transit flights through a transparent tunnel. Binary statistical analysis (Welch's t-test, Cohen's d effect size) of 95 flight trajectories is presented, quantifying the differences between flights in an unobstructed tunnel and in a confined tunnel volume. The results indicate that body pitch angle, heading rate, flapping frequency, and vertical speed (heave) are all affected by confinement, and other flight variables show minor or statistically insignificant changes. These results form a baseline as swarm tracking and analysis begins to isolate the effects of neighbors from environment.

To solve the deficiencies of speed-tracking control for DC motor systems with multiple transmission channels and external disturbances in recent remote-control systems, a second-order super twisting sliding mode control method is proposed. First, the model of a DC motor with multiple channels and external disturbances is considered. Then, an observer in the form of the super twisting algorithm is presented to estimate the states of the system. Furthermore, a second-order super twisting sliding mode control algorithm based on the super twisting observer is designed to track the speed of the DC motor. In this, a nonlinear term is constructed to restrain the external disturbances and jitters while switching among the channels. Also, the proposed method is testified to be stable. Finally, both simulations and practical experiments are conducted to demonstrate the availability of the methodology.

This paper proposed a fractional order PID sliding mode control (FOSMC-PID) for speed regulation of permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). Fractional calculus has been incorporated in sliding mode controller (SMC) design to enhance chattering suppression ability. However, the design of fractional sliding surface is crucial to ensure that speed tracking accuracy is not jeopardized. The proposed controller is designed with a fractional order PID sliding surface, which balances the characteristics of sliding surface with PI or PD structure in terms of robustness and dynamic performance of the controller. By simulation, speed tracking is proven to be faster and more robust with the proposed controller compared to SMC with integer order. Both integration and derivative terms in the surface design outperform FOSMC-PI and FOSMC-PD in terms of disturbance rejection and chattering. Experimental validation proves the advantage of the proposed controller in terms of robustness.

A speed tracking control method for induction machine is shown in this paper. The method consists of outer speed control loop and inner current control loop. Model predictive current control method without the need for calculation of the weighing factors is utilized for the inner control loop, which generates a continuous set of voltage reference values that can be modulated and applied by the inverter to the induction machine. Interesting parallels are drawn between the developed method and state feedback principles that helped with the analysis of the stability and controllability. Simple speed and rotor flux estimator is implemented that helps achieve sensorless control. Simulation is conducted and the method shows great performance for speed tracking in a steady state, and during transients as well. Additionally, compared to the finite control set predictive current control, it shows less harmonic content in the generated torque on the rotor shaft.
