The problem of finite-time boundedness for a class of linear switched positive time-varying delay systems with interval uncertainties and exogenous disturbance is addressed. This characteristic research is that the studied systems include the finite-time bounded subsystems and finite-time unbounded subsystems. Both a slow mode-dependent average dwell time and a fast mode-dependent average dwell time switching techniques are utilized reasonably. And by applying a copositive Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional, novel delay-dependent sufficient criteria are derived to guarantee such systems to be finite-time bounded concerning the given parameters and designed switching signal. Furthermore, new finite-time boundedness criteria of the systems without interval uncertainties are also obtained. Finally, the efficiency of the theoretical results is presented in two illustrative examples.

This paper applies a robust generalised proportional integral (GPI) controller to address the problems of stabilisation and position tracking in voltage-controlled magnetic levitation systems, with consideration of the system’s physical parameters, non-linearities and exogenous disturbance signals. The controller has been developed using as a basis a model of the tangent linearised system around an arbitrary unstable equilibrium point. Since the approximate linearised system is differentially flat, it is therefore controllable. This flatness gives the resulting linearised system a relevant cascade characteristic, thus allowing simplification of the control scheme design. The performance of the proposed GPI controller has been analysed by means of numerical simulations and compared with two controllers: (i) a standard proportional integral derivative (PID) control, and (ii) a previously designed exact feedforward-GPI controller. Simulation results show that the proposed GPI control has a better dynamic response than the other two controllers, along with a better performance in terms of the integral squared tracking error (ISE), the integral absolute tracking error (IAE), and the integral time absolute tracking error (ITAE). Finally, experimental results have been included to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed controller in terms of position stabilisation and tracking performance when appreciable non-linearities and uncertainties exist in the underlying system. Comparative graphs and metrics have shown a superior performance of the proposed GPI scheme to control the magnetic levitation platform.

Due to the emergence of the coronavirus disease (COVID 19), education systems in most countries have adapted and quickly changed their teaching strategy to online teaching. This paper presents the design and implementation of a novel Internet of Things (IoT) device, called MEIoT weather station, which incorporates an exogenous disturbance input, within the National Digital Observatory of Smart Environments (OBNiSE) architecture. The exogenous disturbance input involves a wind blower based on a DC brushless motor. It can be controlled, via Node-RED platform, manually through a sliding bar, or automatically via different predefined profile functions, modifying the wind speed and the wind vane sensor variables. An application to Engineering Education is presented with a case study that includes the instructional design for the least-squares regression topic for linear, quadratic, and cubic approximations within the Educational Mechatronics Conceptual Framework (EMCF) to show the relevance of this proposal. This work’s main contribution to the state-of-the-art is to turn a weather monitoring system into a hybrid hands-on learning approach thanks to the integrated exogenous disturbance input.

This paper investigated observer-based controller for a class of singular nonlinear systems with state and exogenous disturbance-dependent noise. A new sufficient condition for finite-time stochastic input-to-state stability (FTSISS) of stochastic nonlinear systems is developed. Based on the sufficient condition, a sufficient condition on impulse-free and FTSISS for corresponding closed-loop error systems is provided. A linear matrix inequality condition, which can calculate the gains of the observer and state-feedback controller, is developed. Finally, two simulation examples are employed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approaches.

Abstract Global change has been accompanied by recent increases in the frequency and intensity of various ecological disturbances (e.g., fires, floods, cyclones), both natural and anthropogenic in origin. Because these disturbances often interact, their cumulative and synergistic effects can result in unforeseen consequences, such as insect outbreaks, crop failure, and progressive ecosystem degradation. We consider the roles of biological legacies, thresholds, and lag effects responsible for the distinctive impacts of interacting disturbances. We propose a hierarchical classification that distinguishes the patterns and implications associated with random co-occurrences, individual links, and multiple links among disturbances that cascade in chains or networks. Disturbance-promoting interactions apparently prevail over disturbance-inhibiting ones. Complex and exogenous disturbance cascades are less predictable than simple and endogenous links because of their dependency on adjacent or synchronous events. These distinctions help define regional disturbance regimes and can have implications for natural selection, risk assessment, and options for management intervention.

This paper is concerned with the problem of finite-time control for nonlinear systems with time-varying delay and exogenous disturbance, which can be represented by a Takagi–Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model. First, by constructing a novel augmented Lyapunov–Krasovskii functional involving several symmetric positive definite matrices, a new delay-dependent finite-time boundedness criterion is established for the considered T-S fuzzy time-delay system by employing an improved reciprocally convex combination inequality. Then, a memory state feedback controller is designed to guarantee the finite-time boundness of the closed-loop T-S fuzzy time-delay system, which is in the framework of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Finally, the effectiveness and merits of the proposed results are shown by a numerical example.
