Identity construction is a complex issue, especially for Hongkongers. Due to historical reason, Hongkongers are regarded to have multiple languages and dual identities, which is hybridity of Chinese (eastern) culture and English (western) culture. Based on the method of narrative inquiry, this study explores how a young generation Hongkonger constructs her identity in a post-colonial context and provides evidence of Hongkonger’s hybrid identity. On the one hand, Hongkongers desire permission to be accepted in the certain cultural communities. On the other hand, they are excluded by both the Chinese community and the English community from a cultural point of view, which leads to localism in Hongkong. As a result, they are like cultural orphans wandering in the cultural “in-between” space.

AbstractThis paper reports a comprehensive instability analysis of a 3D Charney-like model with an observationally compatible generic stratosphere. It is found that the values of a single non-dimensional parameter (detailed definition in text), in conjunction with representative values of four other non-dimensional parameters, would dictate the existence of multiple branches of unstable modes as a function of the zonal wavenumber. Prototype Charney mode, Green mode, and two additional structurally distinct modes (Charney+ Mode and Tropopause Mode) are identified. The latter result from the additional strong influence of the tropopause. The dynamical nature of all modes is delineated in terms of their meridional fluxes of heat and potential-vorticity. The three-dimensional structure of the ageostrophic velocity field in each mode is presented to identify its potential of inducing frontogenesis. Optimal-mode analyses are also performed to ascertain how a disturbance with a predisposed structure would explosively develop towards each type of normal mode. In view of the pivotal role of Γ in baroclinic instability and for historical reason, we name it the Charney Number. It is most instructive to think of Γ as a ratio of the meridional gradient of PV associated with the basic flow in the troposphere, , to that associated with the earth’s rotation, β.

Abstract Despite the modern boom in technology, we are still faced with the fact that people write texts without diacritics. There are two main reasons for this. The first, historical reason stems from the past when the use of diacritics was troublesome and people would write text without them. The second one is the speed - typing without diacritics is usually faster. Text without diacritics is easy to understand for people, but for some types of documents, missing diacritics can cause a problem. This is also an issue when computers process such text. In this paper, we propose an algorithm based on word n-grams (a contiguous sequence of n words) that can restore diacritics of text written in the Slovak language. We also compare and evaluate our results with other algorithms developed for Slovak text.

For more than forty years, the Yogyakarta Sultanate has applied discriminatory policy on law ownership to Chinese Indonesian. Historically, the Chinese descendants have not been able to own land except Building Rights or HGB. This policy was outlined in the Regional Head Instructions Number K.898/I/A/75. The research analyzes what is the legal basis of application the disminatory policy on land ownership for Chinese-Indonesia. The research uses normative and empirical legal research with constitutional and local regulation approach. The result of research shows that the Special Region of Yogyakarta imposed a Discriminative Land Ownership Policy to the Chinese-Indonesia is due to historical reason, when the Giyanti Agreement of 1755 sued the Chinese traitor group to the Sultanate. Since then, the Instructions Letter of the Regional Head of DIY PA. VII/No. K/898/I/A/75 was issued to Prohibit the Property rights of Non-Indigenous Indonesian citizens. The research recommends that the Government of Special Region of Yogyakarta should re-considers and reviews the time limitation of banning land ownership to Chinese-Indonesia in the light of respecting the constitutional rights of new generation of the Chinese-Indoensia. This recommendation, off course, needs some requirements for the Chinese-Indonesia such as statement of loyalty to the Sultanate and limitation of the area they may have land ownership.

Due to the ever-increasing need for production efficiency and reliability as well as cost saving, assembly industries have been looking for a better solution compared to current methodologies. It is critically important to know that there is a solution this industry had not paid much attention and can benefit a lot due to not only historical reason but also limited knowledge management or awareness. This chapter examines and qualifies the effect of a couple of special adhesive bonding solutions on various glass plate bonding applications at appliance industry using a total solution such as dispensing system and robot. The result clearly shows its benefit over current methodologies, and also as industry trend moves toward more exterior decoration for high-end image products, this chapter should contribute on glass bonding industry not only for faster production, better efficiency, less production space, and better reliability but also for lower manufacturing cost using special adhesive bonding solutions.

While the task of ironing clothes is generally disliked and seen as a waste of energy, people continue ironing. There are no serious groups or movements against ironing, as it is a behaviour engraved in the collective mind. In this study, we consider it a cultural behaviour that is performed due to an underlying, historical reason that is yet unknown. The aim of this study, however, is to provide a historically appropriate reason for this task. A meta-analysis based on internet searches showed that people primarily iron clothes for aesthetic reasons, which is a non-satisfactory explanation. Some people, however, provided a hygiene-based motive. Based on this probable origin for the act of ironing, a historical review was conducted based on the premise of ironing to disinfect clothes. Some patents were found that dated back to the middle of the 19th century, so ironing had already been established to remove wrinkles at this time. Other clinical reports and recommendations suggested that ironing not only kills lice and nits on the clothes, it also disinfects them from the causative organisms of epidemic typhus and other louse-borne diseases. Thus, the use of ironing in early times, (i.e., before the invention of chemicals, such as pyrethroids, or in situations when there was a lack of water to boil the clothes, like war) demonstrates that hygiene is a plausible reason to explain the dissemination of this behaviour.

The paper attempts to take a look at the works of V.V. Davydov from the perspective of classical historical ideas of objective forms of thinking, through the prism of dialectics as logics – in other words, through the notions that Davydov himself considered as basic foundations of his pedagogical transformations. Appreciation or rejection of Davydov’s achievements depends entirely on the position of ‘experts’: looking at his accomplishments with the eyes of Hegel or Marx, or analyzing them from the point of view of real educational practice are two principally different things. The extent to which historical classics of philosophy and pedagogy revealed itself in Davydov’s activity and how it was or was not implemented – these are the issues that await their exploration. The paper outlines some topics for such research.
