The interplay between chemical reaction and substrate deformation is discussed by adapting Ranz's formulation for scalar mixing to the case of a reactive mixture between segregated reactants, initially separated by an interface whose thickness may not be vanishingly small. Experiments in a simple shear flow demonstrate the existence of three regimes depending on the Damköhler number $Da=t_s/t_c$ where $t_s$ is the mixing time of the interface width and $t_c$ is the chemical time. Instead of treating explicitly the chemical cross-term, we rationalize these different regimes by globalizing it as a production term involving a flux which depends on the rate at which the reaction zone is fed by the reactants, a formulation valid for $Da>1$ . For $Da<1$ , the reactants interpenetrate before they react, giving rise to a ‘diffusio-chemical’ regime where chemical production occurs within a substrate whose width is controlled by molecular diffusion.

Understanding the hydrodynamic conditions in bioreactors is of utmost importance for the selection of operating conditions during cell culture process development. In the present study, the two-phase flow in the lab-scale single-use bioreactor XcellerexTM XDR-10 is characterized for working volumes from 4.5 L to 10 L, impeller speeds from 40 rpm to 360 rpm, and sparging with two different microporous spargers at rates from 0.02 L min−1 to 0.5 L min−1. The numerical simulations are performed with the one-way coupled Euler–Lagrange and the Euler–Euler models. The results of the agitated liquid height, the mixing time, and the volumetric oxygen mass transfer coefficient are compared to experiments. For the unbaffled XDR-10, strong surface vortex formation is found for the maximum impeller speed. To support the selection of suitable impeller speeds for cell cultivation, the surface vortex formation, the average turbulence energy dissipation rate, the hydrodynamic stress, and the mixing time are analyzed and discussed. Surface vortex formation is observed for the maximum impeller speed. Mixing times are below 30 s across all conditions, and volumetric oxygen mass transfer coefficients of up to 22.1 h−1 are found. The XDR-10 provides hydrodynamic conditions which are well suited for the cultivation of animal cells, despite the unusual design of a single bottom-mounted impeller and an unbaffled cultivation bioreactor.

Bottom blowing agitation plays a crucial role in improving the reaction kinetics condition of molten bath during the steelmaking process. Herein, the influence of bottom blowing mode on the flow and mixing characteristics of molten bath and the abrasion characteristics of refractory lining in a 6:1 scaled-down model of a 100 t converter were investigated using physical and numerical simulations together. Eight bottom blowing modes were designed (uniform, three-point linear co-direction, three-point linear unco-direction, two-point linear, circumferential linear, A-type, V-type, and triangle alternating). The results indicated that bottom blowing mode has a significant effect on the local flow field at the inner ring of bottom tuyeres, the velocity interval distribution, and the turbulent kinetic energy, which in turn determines the tracer diffusion path and rate as well the mixing time of molten bath. Reasonable non-uniform bottom blowing modes promote the interaction between the various stirring sub-zones of the molten bath. Among them, the three-point linear co-direction mode and A-type mode have the highest mixing efficiency under the conditions of bottom blowing and combined blowing, respectively, which is superior to the uniform mode. In addition, the bottom blowing mode changed the location and degree of abrasion of the refractory lining, and the total abrasion of the non-uniform mode was reduced. The average value and fluctuation degree of integral wall shear stress for the A-type mode were minimal.

Reduce the impact of the building sector has become a key point of sustainable development. The production of lightweight materials for the building industry is therefore a must. To produce such materials, foaming is a process commonly used to trap air bubbles and achieve a range of low densities. A sufficient low thermal conductivity and an acceptable ability to regulate humidity variations in order to limit overall energy consumption are the sought properties. In this study, a direct foaming method is applied to formulate gypsum foams using a commercial Plaster and two biobased foaming agents based on proteins. An anionic surfactant (α-olefin sulphonate sodium salt) is used as a reference surfactant. Varying the mixing time, protein content and water content, gypsum foams were produced. The foam volume is measured continuously during the mixing step and the foam homogeneity is controlled. The densities of fresh foams and of the hardened foams are used to identify the links between formulation and foams properties. Gypsum foam specimens with different densities ranging from 300 to 750 kg/m3 are produced. The thermal conductivity and the Moisture Buffer Value measurements are performed. Such properties appear directly linked to the porosity and pore connection of the foams. The obtained results highlight the contribution of biobased surfactant to the performance of gypsum foams.

Background: Wheat flour is an important food ingredient for humans, which is the basic ingredient of bread and other bakery products. Objective: This study aimed to assess the effect of adding Glucose Oxidase (GOX), and exposure to ozone gas on methyl-1, 4-benzoquinone (MBQ), and ethyl-1, 4-benzoquinone (EBQ) secreted by Tribolium castaneum in flour. Methods: The flour contaminated by MBQ and EBQ was treated with ozone gas at (10, 20, and 40 ppm) with exposure times (15, 30, and 45 min). Similarly, GOX was added to flour at (10, 15, and 20 ppm), leaving the dough for periods between 10 and 45 min after treatments. The MBQ and EBQ determined by HPLC, and the UV-Visible Spectrophotometer and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to describe the changes that occurred in the main structure of EBQ after ozonation at 40 ppm for 45 min. Results: The results indicated that adding GOX enzyme to the flour at level 20 ppm degrade the MBQ to 13.7, 20.23, and 39.6 after 15, 30, and 45 min from mixing time, respectively. On the other hnad, the EBQ degrades to 13.6, 18.9, and 35.9%. In contrast, the percentages of degradation of MBQ and EBQ increases after ozonation at 40 ppm for 45min were 84.1 and 78.8%, respectively. The results obtained by UV–vis spectroscopy and FTIR reflect that many oxidation products formed as aldehydes, ketones, and carboxylic acids. Conclusion: In general, ozonation was a reliable treatment for the degradation of benzoquinone in flour.

The structural property of the search graph plays an important role in the success of local search-based metaheuristic algorithms. Magnification is one of the structural properties of the search graph. This study builds the relationship between the magnification of a search graph and the mixing time of Markov Chain (MC) induced by the local search-based metaheuristics on that search space. The result shows that the ergodic reversible Markov chain induced by the local search-based metaheuristics is inversely proportional to magnification. This result indicates that it is desirable to use a search space with large magnification for the optimization problem in hand rather than using any search spaces. The performance of local search-based metaheuristics may be good on such search spaces since the mixing time of the underlying Markov chain is inversely proportional to the magnification of search space. Using these relations, this work shows that MC induced by the Metropolis Algorithm (MA) mixes rapidly if the search graph has a large magnification. This indicates that for any combinatorial optimization problem, the Markov chains associated with the MA mix rapidly i.e., in polynomial time if the underlying search graph has large magnification. The usefulness of the obtained results is illustrated using the 0/1-Knapsack Problem, which is a well-studied combinatorial optimization problem in the literature and is NP-Complete. Using the theoretical results obtained, this work shows that Markov Chains (MCs) associated with the local search-based metaheuristics like random walk and MA for 0/1-Knapsack Problem mixes rapidly.

Abstract In high-temperature carbonate producers, conventional hydrochloric (HCl) acid systems have been ineffective at delivering sustainable production improvement due to their kinetics. Retarded acids are deemed necessary to control the reaction and create effective wormholes. This scenario is even more critical in wells completed across long openhole horizontal intervals due to reservoir heterogeneity, changing downhole dynamics, and uniform acid placement goals. Out of the different retarded acid options, emulsified acid is one of the preferred choices by Middle East operators because of its excellent corrosion inhibition and deep wormhole penetration properties. However, it also brings other operational complexities, such as higher friction pressures, reduced pump rates, and more elaborate mixing procedures, which in some cases restrict its applicability. The recent introduction of a single-phase retarded inorganic acid system (SPRIAS) has enabled stimulation with the same benefits as emulsified acids while eliminating its drawbacks, allowing friction pressures like that of straight HCl and wormholing performance equivalent to that of emulsified acid. A newly drilled oil producer in one of the largest carbonate fields in onshore Middle East was selected by the operator for pilot implementation of the SPRIAS as an alternative to emulsified acid. The candidate well featured significant damage associated with drilling, severely affecting its productivity. The well was completed across 3,067 ft of 6-in. openhole horizontal section, with a bottomhole temperature of 285°F, permeability range of 0.5 to 1.0 md, and an average porosity of 15%. Coiled tubing (CT) equipped with fiber optics was selected as the fluid conveyance method due to its capacity to enable visualization of the original fluid coverage through distributed temperature sensing (DTS), thus allowing informed adjustment of the stimulation schedule as well as identification of chemical diversion and complementary fluid placement requirements. Likewise, lower CT friction pressures from SPRIAS enabled the utilization of high-pressure jetting nozzle for enhanced acid placement, which was nearly impossible with emulsified acid. Following the acidizing treatment, post-stimulation DTS showed a more uniform intake profile across the uncased section; during well testing operations, the oil production doubled, exceeding the initial expectations. The SPRIAS allowed a 40% reduction in CT friction pressures compared to emulsified acid, 20% optimization in stimulation fluids volume, and reduced mixing time by 18 hours. The experience gained with this pilot well confirmed the SPRIAS as a reliable option to replace emulsified acids in the region. In addition to production enhancement, this novel fluid simplified logistics by eliminating diesel transportation, thus reducing equipment and environmental footprints. It also reduces friction, thus enabling high-pressure jetting via CT, leading to more efficient stimulation with lower volumes.
