Promise and devotion: catholicism and Girl Guides in Brazil

This paper attempts to analyze the main justifications for the expansion of Girl Guides in Brazil, a movement that featured a strong expression of female association, a tactic mobilized by certain female Catholic intellectuals to legitimize their circulation in the public space. It indicates education, culture and assistance as important fronts, in a group of actions aimed at securing the Catholic foundations of Brazilian society. Although the elementary principle of Girl Guides wasn’t connected to any one religion or belief, it’s possible to assess that the movement in Brazil was strongly intertwined with a religious and moral discourse in the form of the “good Girl Guide”, who should be pious and devoted to her promise of serving God and country, with clearly Catholic roots.

Outline of a Brain Model for Self-Observing Agents

Brain-inspired models for conscious robots should refer to the cellular double structure of the brain, consisting of the neuronal system and the glial system, embodying two ontological realms. Therefore, a purely neurobiological approach to machine consciousness is biased by an ontological fault in exclusively referring to the neuronal system. The brain model for self-observing agents outlined in this paper focuses on the glial-neuronal synaptic units (tripartite synapses). Whereas the neuronal component of the synapse embodies objective subjectivity processing sensory information, the glial component (astrocyte) embodies subjective subjectivity generating subjective behavior (intentions, consciousness) in its interactions with the neuronal part of the synapse. The elementary principle of the implementation of self-observing agents is this: a brain is capable of self-observation, if the concept of intention to observe something and the concept of the observed are located in different places. Based on a formalism of qualitative information processing, the architecture of self-observation is described in increasing complexity, building networks. It is suggested that if a robot brain is equipped with a network of modules for self-observation, the robot may generate subjective perspectives of self-observation indicating self-consciousness.

Key Indicators of the Production Process in Global Environment

Research background: Globalization brings rapidly changing global environment and highly competitive environment which manufacturing companies force to fight not only for their place in the market, but also to use various management methods and, above all, measure and manage their business performance. In production companies, the basis for performance measurement and management is to monitor data from production process, which should help to obtain an up-to-date production overview and serves a basis for planning processes, and remuneration of employees or for evaluating the efficiency of resources and equipment. Purpose of the article: Many approaches and indicators companies use for this evaluation, including key performance indicators. The aim of the article is to design key indicators for the evaluation of production process and to create a model for reporting the results from the production process. Methods: The design of the production process evaluation has been creating on the analysis and evaluation of the primary survey and according to the methodologies of production process steps for the determination of key indicators from available secondary sources. The contribution brings the primary data collection of a recent survey conducted in manufacturing companies in the Czech Republic. Findings & Value added: The paper sets up internal evaluation indicators for businesses using the elementary principle based on evaluation of the Overall Equipment Effectiveness.

Overall Equipment Effectiveness within Counterfactual Impact Evaluation Concept

Counterfactual impact evaluation (CIE) is a scientific quantitative approach mainly based on experiments and quasi experiments. CIE is trying to prove a causal relationship between outputs and outcomes. CIE does not take into account coherence of external incentives of companies with internal incentives that have or may have an impact on the behaviour of enterprises. The paper sets up internal evaluation indicators for businesses, counterfactuals useful for creating a more complex metrics evaluating businesses in the area of performance. The aim of the paper is to present model situation using the elementary principle of counterfactual impact evaluation based on “the Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE)”.

A Constructed PQ2 Chart for Calculating the Optimized Process Parameters in Die Casting of Aluminum Alloy

The Mixed Method Analysis of Higher Order Mode in Waveguide of Piecewise Homogeneous Dielectric

This paper presented the elementary principle and the computation for waveguide eigenvalues by using mixed method (Quadric-FE-BEM). A general computer program based on the mixed method is programed, as an application, the cut–off wavelength of higher order modes in the rectangular waveguide are computed and the calculation results are well in agreement with the theoretical value. It has been shown that the mixed method is an effective method to analyze waveguide eigenvalues in engineering. At last, the cut-off wavelength of higher order modes in TEM Cell of homogeneous dielectric is also analyzed.
