Titania (anatase) nanoparticles were anisotropically functionalized in water-toluene Pickering emulsions to self-assemble into nanoshells with diameters from 500 nm to 3 μm as candidates for encapsulation of drugs and other compounds. The water-phase contained a hydrophilic ligand, glucose-6-phosphate, while the toluene-phase contained a hydrophobic ligand, n-dodecylphosphonic acid. The addition of a dilute sodium alginate suspension that provided electrostatic charge was essential for the self-limited assembly of the nanoshells. The self-assembled spheres were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, elemental mapping, and atomic force microscopy. Drug release studies using tetracycline suggest a rapid release dominated by surface desorption.

Because the well-known site-competition and step-controlled epitaxy rules cannot reasonably describe all the incorporation processes of the main impurities (Al and N) into 4H-SiC during epitaxy, the concept of replacement incorporation was proposed and applied to explain the experimental results published so far. In this model, the transient formation of C or Si vacancies at the surface or sub-surface of terraces is proposed to play a key role by destabilizing the impurities sitting on them. In addition to the availability of these vacancies at the surface, desorption was proposed to be a very important limiting process for Al incorporation while only occasionally relevant for N incorporation. The main 4H-SiC epitaxial growth parameters are reviewed and discussed according to the proposed replacement model.

In the study of field desorption of cesium from rhenium carburized in benzene vapors, it was found that after desorption of cesium from the surface, desorption continues and a desorption contour is formed around the faces (1100), which shrinks to the centers of the faces as the field strength increases. The previously unobserved anomalous behavior of the field desorption is explained using cesium intercalation in graphite structures formed on the surface of the emitter.
