Background: Reverse supply chains of machinery and equipment face significant challenges, and overcoming them is critical for effective customer service and sustainable operation. Maintenance and repair services, strongly associated with the reverse movement of equipment, are among the most demanding reverse supply chain operations. Equipment is scattered in various locations, and multiple suppliers are involved in its maintenance, making it challenging to manage the related reverse supply chain operations. Effective maintenance is essential for businesses-owners of the equipment, as reducing costs while improving service quality helps them gain a competitive advantage. Methods: To enhance reverse supply chain operations related to equipment maintenance, this paper presents the operational framework, the methodological approach, and the architecture for developing a system that covers the needs for predictive maintenance in the service supply chain. It is based on Industry 4.0 technologies, such as the Internet of things, machine learning, and cloud computing. Results: As a result of the successful implementation of the system, effective equipment maintenance and service supply chain management is achieved supporting the reverse supply chain. Conclusions: This will eventually lead to fewer good-conditioned spare part replacements, just in time replacements, extended equipment life cycles, and fewer unnecessary disposals.

The present paper analyzes the damage of surfaces at spots of frictional contact, namely, the friction nodes on a camshaft and the connecting rod pins of a crankshaft. The resulting wear of the monitored friction nodes reduces the technical life of the machines, which can lead to the decommissioning of the machine. Wear was assessed by measuring roughness and microhardness and by observing the microstructures of the materials. The results of the experiments show that the rotating parts displayed visible wear on the cams, as well as on the connecting rod pins. The experiments revealed that wear was caused by the heating of the material to a high temperature during the operation of the machine and that there was a gradual cooling and tempering of the material, which led to a reduction in the microhardness of the monitored object. Lower microhardness values can be a cause of greater wear of the monitored objects. When comparing the microhardness of the used and the new camshaft, the hardened layer of the new camshaft from secondary production has a significantly smaller thickness compared to worn cams, which leads to the finding of a different material quality compared to the original parts from primary production. This fact indicates that the wear of a new camshaft as a spare part can contribute to the shortening of the technical life of friction nodes.

The applications of SERS in therapeutic drug monitoring, or other fields of analytical chemistry, require the availability of sensitive sensors and experimental approaches that can be implemented in affordable ways. In this contribution, we show the production of cost-effective SERS sensors obtained by depositing Lee-Meisel Ag colloids on filter paper either by natural sedimentation or centrifugation. We have characterized the morphological and plasmonic features of the sensors by optical microscopy, SEM, and UV-Vis spectroscopy. Such sensors can be used to quantify by SERS the anti-epileptic drug Perampanel (in the concentration range 1 × 10−4–5 × 10−6 M) by spinning them during the micro-Raman measurements on the top of a custom device obtained from spare part hard disk drives. This approach minimizes laser-induced heating effects and allows averaging over the spatial non-uniformity of the sensor.

The aim of this paper is to identify a key dimension of knowledge sharing strategy to improve Facilities Management Process of Protocol (FMP) in achieving facilities management organization performance. It investigates the key dimension of facilities management protocol strategy that can be adopted by the Facilities Management organizations and examines the problem related to IBS during the operational stages of maintenance management. An analysis of previous research provides an insight of the relationship between the IBS attribute and Facilities Management Protocol (FMP) component that can proposed a significant variable to improve the FM performance to solve problem related maintenance for IBS building. The review shows that a factor related to FM Protocol such as ‘operate and optimize facility’, ‘monitor and record facility condition’, ‘implement schedule maintenance work’, ‘manage inventory and spare part’, and ‘supervised vendor work’ was identified as a key dimension for FMP strategy to improve FM performance. Meanwhile a factor such as ‘diagnosing tools and assessment’, ‘systematic procurement procedure’, ‘complementary IBS input and information document’ and ‘handing over document’ was classified as a key factor to improve FM performance through adopting knowledge sharing strategy. This paper suggests that through improvement of each factor, the recognition of the whole strategic approach process in FMP can be increase thus helping to strengthen the facilities management organization for competitive advantages.

Purpose - Investigate the impact of additive manufacturing (AM) on the performance of a spare parts supply chain with a particular focus on underlying spare part demand patterns. Design/Methodology/Approach - This work evaluates various AM-enabled supply chain configurations through Monte Carlo simulation. Historical demand simulation and intermittent demand forecasting are used in conjunction with a mixed integer linear program to determine optimal network nodal inventory policies. By varying demand characteristics and AM capacity this work assesses how to best employ AM capability within the network. Findings - This research assesses the preferred AM-enabled supply chain configuration for varying levels of intermittent demand patterns and AM production capacity. The research shows that variation in demand patterns alone directly affects the preferred network configuration. The relationship between the demand volume and relative AM production capacity affects the regions of superior network configuration performance. Research limitations/implications - This research makes several simplifying assumptions regarding AM technical capabilities. AM production time is assumed to be deterministic and does not consider build failure probability, build chamber capacity, part size, part complexity, and post-processing requirements. Originality/value - This research is the first study to link realistic spare part demand characterization to AM supply chain design using quantitative modeling.
