This study provides an analysis of the hot embossing process with poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) film. The hot embossing process engraves a fine pattern on a flexible film using a stamp, applied heat and pressure. As the quality of the embossing pattern varies according to various process variables, the mechanism of making the embossed shape is complicated and difficult to analyze. Therefore, analysis takes much time and cost because it usually has to perform a lot of experiments to find an appropriate process condition. In this paper, the hot embossing process was analyzed using a computational analysis method to quickly find the optimal process. To do this, we analyzed the embossing phenomenon using the finite element method (FEM) and arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian (ALE) re-mesh technique. For this purpose, we developed a constitutive model considering the strain, strain rate, temperature-dependent stress and softening of the flexible film. Work hardening, strain softening, and temperature-softening behavior of PMMA materials were well described by the proposed method. The developed constitutive model were applied in the embossing analysis via user-subroutine. This proposed method allowed a precise analysis of the phenomenon of film change during the hot embossing process.

AbstractHuman observers can quickly and accurately categorize scenes. This remarkable ability is related to the usage of information at different spatial frequencies (SFs) following a coarse-to-fine pattern: Low SFs, conveying coarse layout information, are thought to be used earlier than high SFs, representing more fine-grained information. Alternatives to this pattern have rarely been considered. Here, we probed all possible SF usage strategies randomly with high resolution in both the SF and time dimensions at two categorization levels. We show that correct basic-level categorizations of indoor scenes are linked to the sampling of relatively high SFs, whereas correct outdoor scene categorizations are predicted by an early use of high SFs and a later use of low SFs (fine-to-coarse pattern of SF usage). Superordinate-level categorizations (indoor vs. outdoor scenes) rely on lower SFs early on, followed by a shift to higher SFs and a subsequent shift back to lower SFs in late stages. In summary, our results show no consistent pattern of SF usage across tasks and only partially replicate the diagnostic SFs found in previous studies. We therefore propose that SF sampling strategies of observers differ with varying stimulus and task characteristics, thus favouring the notion of flexible SF usage.

Abstract As the application of the direct printing method becomes diversified, printing on substrates with non-flat surfaces is increasingly required. However, printing on three-dimensional surfaces suffers from a number of difficulties, which include ink flow due to gravity, and the connection of print lines over sharp edges. This study presents an effective way to print a fine pattern (~ 30 μm) on three different faces with sharp edge boundaries. The method uses a deflectable and stretchable jet stream of conductive ink, which is produced by near-field electrospinning (NFES) technique. Due to added polymer in the ink, the jet stream from the nozzle is less likely to be disconnected, even when it is deposited over sharp edges of objects. As a practical industrial application, we demonstrate that the method can be effectively used for recent display applications, which require the connection of electrical signal and power on both sides of the glass. When the total length of printed lines along the ‘Π’ shaped glass surfaces was 1.2 mm, we could achieve the average resistance of 0.84 Ω.
