The present study is a systematic review on the effectiveness of Parent Training (PT) and coaching in deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) rehabilitation programs which reviews and synthesizes the existing body of evidence to assess the benefits of these programs in enhancing parents’ sensitivity, responsivity and promoting language development in DHH children during the first years after HA fitting or CI activation. Five published studies met the Population, Intervention, Comparison and Outcomes (PICO) inclusion criteria and were eligible to be included, but heterogeneity in terms of the study design, interventions and outcomes did not allow for performing a meta-analysis. All included studies shared the view that a parent’s learning is a circular (rather than frontal) process, and the results appear promising in terms of enhancing parents’ responsiveness and promoting DHH child language development. Nevertheless, the available evidence was judged to not be robust enough due to limitations in the studies’ designs. Further high-quality evidence is needed to evaluate the true degree of clinical value and the cost effectiveness of PT programs aimed at increasing parents’ responsiveness to their DHH children.

Major gaps remain in our knowledge of the early history of Homo sapiens in Wallacea. By 70–60 thousand years ago (ka), modern humans appear to have entered this distinct biogeographical zone between continental Asia and Australia. Despite this, there are relatively few Late Pleistocene sites attributed to our species in Wallacea. H. sapiens fossil remains are also rare. Previously, only one island in Wallacea (Alor in the southeastern part of the archipelago) had yielded skeletal evidence for pre-Holocene modern humans. Here we report on the first Pleistocene human skeletal remains from the largest Wallacean island, Sulawesi. The recovered elements consist of a nearly complete palate and frontal process of a modern human right maxilla excavated from Leang Bulu Bettue in the southwestern peninsula of the island. Dated by several different methods to between 25 and 16 ka, the maxilla belongs to an elderly individual of unknown age and sex, with small teeth (only M1 to M3 are extant) that exhibit severe occlusal wear and related dental pathologies. The dental wear pattern is unusual. This fragmentary specimen, though largely undiagnostic with regards to morphological affinity, provides the only direct insight we currently have from the fossil record into the identity of the Late Pleistocene people of Sulawesi.

Objective: The microanatomy of the fronto-ethmoidal transition region has been addressed in several classifications. CT stereoscopic imaging (3DCTSI) provides improved display and delineates three defined complex “spaces”, the Frontal Sinus/Frontal Recess Space, the Infundibular Space of the Ethmoid Uncinate Process, and the Ethmoid Bulla Space (FSRS, IS-EUP, EB), none of which were adequately described with the “cell” terminology. We present details on the 3D microanatomy, variability, and prevalence of these spaces. Methods: 3D stereoscopic imaging displays (3DCTSI) were created from 200 datasets. The images were analyzed and categorized by a radiologist (SJZ), and consultant otolaryngologists, focusing on 3D microanatomy of the fronto-ethmoidal transition, the frontal recess/frontal sinus, and drainage pathways, in comparison to established anatomical classification systems. Results: The anterior ethmoid is subdivided into seven groups with the following core properties and prevalence: 1. The horizontal roof of the IS-EUP is attached to the superior half of the frontal process of the maxilla (19%); 2. The IS-EUP extends into the frontal recess (6.5%); 3. The IS-EUP extends into the frontal recess and the frontal sinus (18.5%); 4. A bulla is seen in the medial frontal sinus (3%); 5. The ethmoid bulla and supra bullar space extend into the frontal sinus (7%); 6. Lamellae extend into the FSRS antero-superiorly (25%); 7. FSRS expansion expands below the upper half of the frontal process of the maxilla (FSRS) (21%). Conclusion: 3-D analysis of the detailed anatomy provides important new anatomic information with the increased focus on precision surgery in the region.

AbstractWe describe the (anteromedial) partial maxillectomy technique which can be used to address impaired nasal breathing in cases of significant protrusion of the frontal process of the maxilla into the nasal cavity, narrowing the nasal pathway. It fits to nasal physiology avoiding mucosal resection. It can be combined with surgery of the inferior turbinate. The described technique can be used in all forms of rhinoplasty.

The genus Ephoron Williamson, 1802 is widely distributed around the world. In Thailand, only Ephoron indicus Pictet, 1843 was reported in 1961. In this study, a new Ephoron mayfly is described as Ephoron ookaewae sp. nov. In this new species description, the morphological characteristics of larvae and eggs in addition to adults are also shown in detail. Number of tubercles on mandibular tusks, and a median frontal process in larvae, distinguish Ephoron ookaewae sp. nov. from other Ephoron species. Their polar cap shape and a concave indentation in their eggs are also unusual. In addition, the mitochondrial DNA COI sequence data of the newly described Ephoron ookaewae sp. nov. is registered in GenBank. Registration of sequence data for the DNA barcode region of Ephoron mayflies inhabiting the Oriental region remains limited, however it will be useful for future research.

Abstract Purpose To report our experience using endoscopic intranasal incision reduction (EIIR) for nasal fractures and to assess effectiveness of the method. Methods 30 patients who underwent EIIR were retrospectively analysed. All the patients were examined by three-dimensional computed tomography (3D CT), acoustic rhinometry and rhinomanometry, preoperatively and postoperatively at 1 month. The visual analogue scale (VAS) was used to assess the preoperative aesthetics and nasal airflow satisfaction and at 1, 3 and 6 months postoperatively. VAS aesthetic satisfaction was also scored by two junior doctors. Results 3D CT showed that the fracture fragments fitted well in 30 patients postoperatively at 1 month. VAS aesthetics and nasal airflow scores were significantly improved postoperatively at 1, 3 and 6 months compared with preoperative scores (P < 0.01). The VAS aesthetic scores from the two surgeons were also significantly improved (P < 0.01). The minimal cross-sectional area increased from 0.39 ± 0.13 to 0.64 ± 0.13 (P < 0.001), the nasal volume increased from 4.65 ± 0.86 to 6.37 ± 0.94 (P < 0.001) and the total inspiratory airway resistance of the bilateral nasal cavity median decreased from 0.467 Pa/mL/s to 0.193 Pa/mL/s (P < 0.001). There were no technique-related intraoperative complications. Conclusion EIIR was a practical choice, and the aesthetics and nasal airflow were significantly improved in patients with overlapped and displaced bone fragments, patients with fractures of the frontal process of the maxilla (FFPM), patients who underwent failed CR and patients beyond the optimal temporal window.

The aim of the study was to describe the clinical and imaging findings of three dogs diagnosed with orbital ligament avulsion. Three immature dogs presented following a facial bite trauma, including multiple skull fractures and ventral, ventrolateral or rostrolateral displacement of the affected eye. The extent of lesions and orbital ligament avulsion were assessed and diagnosed using CT (n=2) or MRI (n=1). Orbital ligament avulsion was identified as an interruption of the linear structure between the zygomatic process of the frontal bone and the frontal process of the zygomatic bone. One dog was treated surgically to correct a visual axis alteration, while the remaining two dogs were managed conservatively. Orbital ligament avulsion is an uncommon condition that should be considered following a facial trauma. Concurrent lesions might necessitate surgical intervention, but it remains unclear if the avulsion of the orbital ligament itself requires a specific treatment.

This study developed a zygomaticomaxillary complex (ZMC) patient-specific repairing thin (PSRT) implant based on the buttress theory by integrating topology optimization and finite element (FE) analysis. An intact facial skeletal (IFS) model was constructed to perform topology optimization to obtain a hollow skeleton (HS) model with the structure and volume optimized. The PSRT implant was designed based on the HS contour which represented similar trends as vertical buttress pillars. A biomechanical analysis was performed on a ZMC fracture fixation with the PSRT implant and two traditional mini-plates under uniform axial loads applied on posterior teeth with 250 N. Results indicated that the variation in maximum bone stress and model volume between the IFS and HS models was 15.4% and 75.1%, respectively. Small stress variations between the IFS model and repairing with a PSRT implant (2.75–26.78%) were found for compressive stress at frontal process and tensile stress at the zygomatic process. Comparatively, large stress variations (30.67–96.26%) with different distributions between the IFS model and mini-plate models were found at the corresponding areas. This study concluded that the main structure/contour design of the ZMC repair implant according to the buttress position and orientation can obtain a favorable mechanical behavior.

Abstract BACKGROUND Internal maxillary artery (IMax) is a relatively new donor vessel used in the extracranial-intracranial bypass surgery. However, unfamiliarity and relatively elaborate techniques of its harvest precluded its widespread use. OBJECTIVE To present a simplified technique of IMax harvest based on constant anatomical landmarks without the need of extensive skull-base drilling while providing adequate space for proximal anastomosis. METHODS Cadaveric dissection on 4 cadaveric heads (8 sides) was performed. Zygomatic osteotomy was performed and temporal muscle was dissected off the zygomatic process of the frontal bone and the frontal process of the zygomatic bone and reflected inferiorly into the bony gap created by the zygomatic osteotomy. Posterior wall of the maxilla (PWoM) was palpated. Following PWoM inferiorly leads to pterygo-maxillary fissure (PMF), which is a constant landmark IMax passes through. RESULTS IMax was localized following this technique before its entrance into PMF in every specimen. Proximal dissection was carried on to the exposed adequate length of the vessel. Depending on the relationship with the lateral pterygoid muscle, this might need to be incised to allow for identification of the IMax. After its transection, proximal stump is mobilized superiorly into the surgical field. Clinical application of this technique was demonstrated on an aneurysm case. CONCLUSION Using the palpation of the PWoM as a landmark for localization of PMF facilitates harvesting of IMax without need for extensive skull-base drilling and shortens the time of the surgery.
