An extended invariant approach to laminate failure of fibre-reinforced polymer structures

This paper presents the extension and validation of omni-failure envelopes for first-ply failure (FPF) and last-ply failure (LPF) analysis of advanced composite materials under general three-dimensional (3D) stress states. Phenomenological failure criteria based on invariant structural tensors are implemented to address failure events in multidirectional laminates using the “omni strain failure envelope” concept. This concept enables the generation of safe predictions of FPF and LPF of composite laminates, providing reliable and fast laminate failure indications that can be particularly useful as a design tool for conceptual and preliminary design of composite structures. The proposed extended omni strain failure envelopes allow not only identification of the controlling plies for FPF and LPF, but also of the controlling failure modes. FPF/LPF surfaces for general 3D stress states can be obtained using only the material properties extracted from the unidirectional (UD) material, and can predict membrane FPF or LPF of any laminate independently of lay-up, while considering the effect of out-of-plane stresses. The predictions of the LPF envelopes and surfaces are compared with experimental data on multidirectional laminates from the first and second World-Wide Failure Exercise (WWFE), showing a satisfactory agreement and validating the conservative character of omni-failure envelopes also in the presence of high levels of triaxiality.

Probabilistic failure envelopes of strip foundations on soils with non-stationary characteristics of undrained shear strength

This paper investigates probabilistic failure envelopes of strip foundations on spatially variable soils with profiles of undrained shear strength su linearly increasing with depth using the lower bound random finite element limit analysis. The spatially variable su is characterised by a non-stationary random field with linearly increasing mean and constant coefficient of variation (COV) with depth. The deterministic uniaxial capacities and failure envelopes are firstly derived to validate numerical models and provide a reference for the subsequent probabilistic analysis. Results indicate that the random field parameters COVsu (COV of su) and Δ (dimensionless autocorrelation distance) have a considerable effect on the probabilistic normalised uniaxial capacities which alters the size of probabilistic failure envelopes. However, COVsu and Δ have an insignificant effect on the shape of probabilistic failure envelopes is observed in the V-H, V-M and H-M loading spaces, such that failure envelopes for different soil variabilities can be simply scaled by the uniaxial capacities. In contrast to COVsu and Δ, the soil strength heterogeneity index κ = μkB/μsu0 has the lowest effect on the probabilistic normalised uniaxial capacity factors but the highest effect on the shape of the probabilistic failure envelopes. A series of expressions are proposed to describe the shape of deterministic and probabilistic failure envelopes for strip foundations under combined vertical, horizontal and moment (V-H-M) loading.

VARIABILITY IN THE FAILURE OF COMPOSITE TUBES SUBJECTED TO COMBINED AXIAL AND TORSIONAL LOADINGS DUE TO MANUFACTURING DEFECTS AND NONDETERMINISTIC MATERIAL PROPERTIES

Tubes made with polymer-matrix fiber-reinforced composite materials are widely used in automobile, mechanical and aerospace engineering applications. Composite tubes are increasingly manufactured using the modern Automated Fiber Placement (AFP) technique. The ply manufacturing parameters and the tube manufacturing parameters have considerable influence on the quality of the manufactured composite tubes. Manufacturing defects and variations in the material properties are inevitable in composite tubes due to the inherent unavoidable variations in these parameters. The commonly identified manufacturing defects include voids, fiber waviness, variation in volume fraction, and fiber misalignment. These have considerable influence on the mechanical behavior and failure of the composite tube. In the present work, the effects of the fiber misalignment and the variations in the material properties on the failure behavior of uniform-diameter composite tubes subjected to combined axial and torsional loadings are determined considering the First-Ply Failure (FPF) characteristics. The first-ply failure envelopes of the composite tube are developed based on the Classical Laminate Theory and Finite Element Modeling and Analysis. Existing works in the literature are used to validate the three-dimensional finite element model of the uniform-diameter composite tube developed using the commercial software ANSYS®. The variations in the first-ply failure loading limits of the uniform-diameter composite tube made of a Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) composite material are investigated using the Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) method, considering the random variability in the material properties and the fiber misalignment. The random variables corresponding to the material properties and the fiber misalignment are generated. For the composite tube with a sample set of simulated random variables the corresponding first-ply failure envelope is determined. The ensemble of such failure envelopes is developed based on an adequate number of simulations from which the probabilistic distributions of the first-ply failure loadings are determined. Design aspects are brought out.

Failure Envelopes of Composite Bucket Foundation for Offshore Wind Turbines under Combined Loading with considering Different Scour Depths

The composite bucket foundation of offshore wind turbines is subjected to a variety of loads in the marine environment, such as horizontal load H, vertical load V , bending moment M, and torque T. In addition, due to the characteristics of its connection section, the water flow around the foundation will produce scour pits of various degrees, reducing the depth of the bucket foundation, which has a nonnegligible impact on the overall stability of the bucket foundation. In this paper, the failure envelope characteristics of different combinations of loads on bucket foundations, including V -H-T, V -M-T, conventional V -H-M, and noncoplanar V -H-M, are numerically investigated with considering different scour depths. The numerical results indicate that the V -H-T, V -M-T, conventional V -H-M, and noncongruent V -H-M failure envelopes gradually shrink inwards with increasing scour depth, and the stability of the composite bucket foundation decreases; the conventional V -H-M failure envelope shows an asymmetry of convexity to the right, and the noncongruent V -H-M failure envelope shows an asymmetry of outward convexity to the left and right. The corresponding mathematical expressions for the failure envelope are obtained through the normalized fitting process, which can be used to evaluate the stability of the bucket foundation based on the relative relationship between the failure envelope and the actual load conditions, which can provide practical guidance for engineering design.
