Magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (MIONPs) were synthesized using tannic acid and characterized by Raman, FTIR, UV, and DRX spectroscopy. In a heterogeneous Fenton-like reaction, the catalytic peroxidase-like activity of MIONPs in the degradation of Acid Red 1 (AR 1) dye was investigated. TEM/STEM was used to determine the quasi-spherical morphology and particle size (3.2 nm) of the synthesized MIONPs. The XRD powder patterns were indexed according to the reverse spinel structure of magnetite, and SEM-EDS analysis confirmed their chemical composition. At pH = 3.5, the decomposition of H2O2 in hydroxyl radicals by MIONPs results in high AR 1 degradation (99%). This behavior was attributed to the size and surface properties of the MIONPs. Finally, the Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) technique detected intermediary compounds in the degradation process.

Abstract Azo dyes are widely used in textile industries. A significant portion of these recalcitrant dyes are being discharged to the natural waters. Due to their low biodegradability they pose serious pollution problems if untreated. In this work, decolourization studies of Acid Red 1 (AR1) by laccase enzyme immobilized onto Zein – Polyvinyl pyrrolidone composite nanofiber is done. The nanofibers were characterized by SEM and FTIR analysis. pH and temperature profiles of immobilized enzyme were found to be broader than its free counterpart. The Km value was found to be 0.243 mM for free laccase and 0.958 mM for immobilized laccase. Similarly Vmax for the free enzyme was 3.572 U/mg compared to 2.48 U/mg of immobilized laccase. The relative activity of immobilized laccase was 64.91% after storage for 30 days at room temperature while it was 28.64% for free laccase. The temperature and pH for AR 1 decolorization were optimized and was found to be 60 °C and 5 respectively. Also decolorization percentage was found to be 91.67% for immobilized laccase and 72.03% of free laccase in the presence of natural mediators like vanillin. From phytotoxicity studies it was found that the germination rate, shoot and root length was increased compared to untreated dye. Therefore, Zein-PVP nanofiber immobilized laccase could be an ideal candidate for the textile dye decolorization.

Sorption of Acid Red 1 (AR1) from aqueous solutions utilizing low-cost sorbent material; (chitosan-iso-vanillin) is studied under batch conditions. The remaining concentrations of the azo dye are measured at λmax = 546 nm by UV spectrophotometric method. Langmuir data reveal that the maximum removal capacity was 555.556 mg/g at pH 3. Freundlich isotherm represents the best fitting model on the removal of AR1 using chemically modified chitosan verifying the sorption takes place on heterogeneous surfaces with multilayer adsorption. Kinetic studies of the sorption process revealed that intraparticle diffusion is not only the rate-determining step but also a chemical reaction takes place as well. The results indicate that high sorption rapidness with almost 90% achieved within 90 min. Thermodynamic investigations suggest that the process favours an exothermic nature. The polymer utilized in the present study is being considered as a feasible sorbent material for the removal of AR1 from waste effluent.
