Cephalopods. On staged animals and popular science conventions at public aquariums. Lars Kaijser Keywords: Aquarium, cephalopod, popular science   The article discusses the way animals are portrayed in popular science, using cephalopods at public aquariums as the basis. Public aquariums tend to display a set of animals that could be described as flagship species. These are animals reoccurring as live examples in tanks, used in marketing and sold as toys in the gift shop. Often, the presentations of these animals are enhanced with scientific facts that are combined with popular cultural stories and well-known iconographies. Together they form what could be labelled as popular science animals, easily recognisable animals with charismatic features. At aquariums, this generally refers to sharks, jellyfish, penguins, frogs or clownfish. The focus is on the biology of the animals, but equal importance is placed on the stories and popular-cultural association frameworks. The popular science animal is comprised of elements from different domains of knowledge, ranging from biology and cultural history to folklore and popular culture. These insights can be contradictory, and one important feature of presentations at aquariums is the endeavour to distinguish between fact and myth. At the same time, the myth is an important resource when curating exhibits and attracting attention. It is part of the convention that the selection of knowledge is not only chosen to inform people about animals but also to entertain and surprise them. The cephalopod is at the crossroad of research and imagination, viewed as enigmatic, fascinating, and fearful. It is characterised as smart, a superhero and a marker for both discoveries and knowledge gaps. The cephalopod, especially the octopus, is an animal that in many ways represents modernity.

Chapter 9 turns its attention from museum objects and spaces to museum visitors, tracing the history of how readers have behaved at writer’s houses and how they have interacted with objects, spaces, and each other. It thus completes the book’s trajectory from the author’s body to that of the reader. It outlines and details nineteenth-century tourist sentimental practices and experiments at sites associated with Petrarch, Rousseau, and Shakespeare. It looks at what tourists brought with them, what they left behind, and what they took away with them. It concludes by describing the writer’s house museum as not so much the scene of writing as the scene of (disavowed) reading.

Nowadays, due to the insufficiently developed theoretical background of gallery business, gallery owners mainly rely on their intuition, analysis of the art market, and numerous sketchy theoretical works and tips. The article presents a comparative analysis and characteristics of the art galleries of the city of Irkutsk, not mentioned previously in the literature. A list of resources necessary for the formation and promotion of attractiveness of art galleries for tourists has been developed. It was created on the basis of the analysis of the activities of Russian and foreign galleries in terms of their tourism attractiveness and cooperation with tourist companies. At the same time, it is mentioned that measures aimed at developing of the tourism attractiveness of the gallery, which are quite often commercial by their nature, should promote the brand of the territory where the gallery is located, preserving its uniqueness. They should in no way turn the art gallery into a gift shop selling art souvenirs.

For the initial development of the theory of lodging, the focus was on guest behavior in a hotel room. The theory is expanded to encompass the guest behavior in the entire hotel facility, including entrance into the lobby, private usage of the room, and time spent in such areas as the restaurant, lounge, gift shop, gym, spa, function rooms, and so on. The theory began with the observed differences in human behavior while at home versus during an overnight stay at a commercial lodging establishment. Further consideration is given to the guest behavior inside the public spaces of a hotel, which is beyond the privacy of the guest room but still within the protective boundary of the hotel building itself, and which is all a part of the lodging experience.
