AbstractOptimization theory is applied to a coastal engineering problem that is the design of a port. This approach was applied to the redesign of La Turballe Port in order to increase the exploitable surface area and simultaneously reduce the occurrence of long waves within the port. Having defined the cost function as a weighted function of wave amplitude and with the chosen parameterization of the port, results show that an extended jetty and a widened mole yield a unique optimal solution. This work demonstrates that numerical optimization may be quick and efficient in the identification of port solutions consistent with classic engineering even in the context of complex problems.

Abstract The boundary layer turbine known as Tesla Turbine invented long ago but has failed to be commercialized and replaced by bladed turbines. In this paper, two new techniques for improving the turbine have been proposed. A test model of the proposed boundary layer turbine has been fabricated made and tested under different conditions. The design process includes producing a virtual design and simulation of the turbine using computer software. The proposed designs were fabricated and then tested to analyse results such as speed produced, power produced, and the turbine efficiency. From this study, the proposed turbine designs manage to achieve 18% and 69% efficiency. The findings of this study will serve as a reference for future studies in the generation of power through an alternative powered driven turbine.

Abstract The level of sea transportation use in Indonesia is getting higher and higher, so it must be balanced with the improvement in the quality of port supporting infrastructure. The Provincial Government of DKI Jakarta will revitalize Kali Adem Port, which will also be assisted by the Thousand Islands Regency Government, considering that Kali Adem Port is one of the gateways to the Thousand Islands. Kali Adem Port is a passenger port located on Jalan Dermaga, Pluit, Penjaringan, North Jakarta, Special Capital Region of Jakarta. Kali Adem Harbor serves tourists who want to visit several islands in the Thousand Islands, and residents of Pulau Seribu who want to buy some daily necessities from Jakarta. Passenger density, problems with access and circulation, and several other problems require this Port to improve its quality and quantity. This port should have designed to pay attention to the environment, such as applying the eco-tect theme to this building, as well as the waterfront concept to maximize the potential of the existing sea. In this design the concept of shading is applied to the facade to maximize comfort and the application of energy-saving lighting in buildings and the Port and its plazas

Abstract Background To assess the clinical outcomes of the Visian Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) with a central port throughout 7 years of follow-up. Methods Eighty-four eyes of 52 patients were evaluated over a follow-up period of 7 years after V4c ICL implantation. Uncorrected (UDVA) and corrected (CDVA) distance visual acuities, refraction, intraocular pressure (IOP), endothelial cell density (ECD) and vault were analysed. Results The mean postoperative UDVA (logMAR) was 0.04 ± 0.11, 0.13 ± 0.19 and 0.17 ± 0.23 at 1-, 5- and 7-years, respectively (P < 0.0001). The mean CDVA (logMAR) remains unchanged throughout a 7-year follow-up period (0.02 ± 0.08 and 0.02 ± 0.08, at 5- and 7-years, respectively, P = 0.2). At all follow-up visits, more than 95% of the eyes achieved a CDVA of 20/25 or better and more than 85% a CDVA of 20/20. At the end of the follow-up (7 years), no eye lost more lines of CDVA, 56 eyes (66.7%) and 28 eyes (33.3%) gained lines of CDVA. At 7-years, the spherical equivalent was − 0.62 ± 0.62 D. No significant increase in IOP (> 20 mmHg or an increase higher than 5 mmHg) occurred in any case throughout the 7-year of follow-up. The loss in ECD from the preoperative baseline at the last follow-up visit was 2.6%. No intraoperative or postoperative complications or adverse events occurred during the follow-up period. Conclusions The outcomes of this study show the long-term viability of the V4c ICL implantation as a surgical option for the correction of myopia.

Abstract Objective: Determine the effectiveness of evacuation systems designed to clear bioaerosols and smoke from the surgical field. Study design: High-speed photographic evaluation of aerosol and smoke generated in simulated surgical fields. Materials and methods: Surgical site aerosol clearance was evaluated using a model of the anterior neck and prototypes for surgical site evacuator ports created using 3D printing. A commercially available electrocautery handpiece fitted with an evacuator was tested on animal tissue for smoke clearance. Both systems were connected to a commercial vacuum powered evacuation system. High speed photography was used to record videos of the aerosols and plumes. Fields were recorded with and without evacuation. Results: Efficient aerosol clearance from an open surgical field using an evacuator port is dependent upon the port design, airflow velocity, and placement relative to the aerosol generating site. The size and surface geometry of the surgical field are also important. Surgical smoke generated with electrocautery is cleared from the field by the evacuation enclosure around the handpiece, even at high electrocautery power settings. Except for device noise, there appears to be no reason for using evacuator flow rates below the maximum setting. Conclusions: Bioaerosol and smoke generated during surgery are potential sources of respiratory pathogens and pose a threat to operating room personnel. Surgical site evacuation can significantly reduce the volume of airborne particles in the field but requires careful design and deployment considerations.

Port design and approaches are usually carried out using real-time computer simulation methods for ship manoeuvring. So-called ship real-time simulation methods are relatively expensive, especially in terms of survey time. Several real-time simulation scenarios carried out by masters and pilots are usually performed, with several simulation attempts in each scenario. Each such attempt can last up to one hour, which, with a large number of scenarios, prolongs the research and increases its cost. Particularly time-consuming is the repetition of many scenarios with alternative solutions for infrastructure development and in various hydrometeorological conditions. To reduce the time-consuming of the tests, a new two-stage method was used to design the target approach on the modernized Port of Ustka. In the first stage, the simulations were carried out with significantly reduced floating navigation marking, and in the second stage with the target marking. Moreover, the so-called “Soft-Bank” method was introduced, i.e., the effects of a collision with the seabed and infrastructure were excluded. Such a solution leads to significant time benefits in conducting research and at the same time does not reduce confidence in the results obtained.
