Abstract The authors of the review aim to understand and assess cartographic Heat Maps’ (HM) designs, tools, and applications. The paper consists of two parts. First describes HM in the context of neocartography and map design by tackling such issues as definition, input data, methods of density determination and generalization, colour schemes, legend construction, and base maps. The second part assesses the range of 17 tools used for creating HM. Tools are divided into non-GIS tools (visualization tools and programming libraries) and GIS applications (desktop and webGIS). GIS desktop software has been selected due to its popularity and wide application. Paper presents an expert assessment of this software with the use of a research questionnaire. The analysis made it possible to develop a division of tools based on their embedding in computer programs and applications and taking into account the types of visualization. It also made it possible to indicate tools that can be used by both professional GIS users (e.g. analysts, cartographers) and the general public, including teachers using HM to visualize geo data for geography lessons. The limitation of the review was the analysis from the expert’s point of view. It would be desirable to include novices perspectives in future studies due to the wide demand for visualization.

Emerging theory of Embedded System, Internet-ofThings, Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence open up broad spectrum to develop innovative applications and to make existing system more efficient. Advent of this new technology speeds up the race towards the automation in eavery aspects of human life. This paper provides a study of embedded system, microcontroller and sensors which can be used for developing such applications. With this study, survey of vital tools and technologies is also discussed and proposed for the development of IOT based application. Paper also provides a model to gather the data from an industrial plant on which data analytics can be done. This paper shows a wide range of IOT perspective for the design of embedded system by discussing research done in it and to use that theory to develop a product which can be helpful in society for the welfares of human kind.

AbstractWe present a system for online composite event recognition over streaming positions of commercial vehicles. Our system employs a data enrichment module, augmenting the mobility data with external information, such as weather data and proximity to points of interest. In addition, the composite event recognition module, based on a highly optimised logic programming implementation of the Event Calculus, consumes the enriched data and identifies activities that are beneficial in fleet management applications. We evaluate our system on large, real-world data from commercial vehicles, and illustrate its efficiency.

Purpose The current maintenance management method has affected the efficiency of the building facility management at Polytechnics. Many issues such as poor service delivery, inadequate finance, poor maintenance planning and maintenance backlogs have emerged due to the usage of conventional method application (paper-based form and unsystematic database. The purpose of this paper is to review existing literature and case studies project of the technologies in maintenance management at Polytechnic, and subsequently to identify the challenge in improving the current maintenance management technologies. Design/methodology/approach The purpose of this paper is to review existing literature and case studies project of the technologies in maintenance management at Polytechnic, and subsequently to identify the challenges of information and communication technology (ICT) implementation for strategic defect diagnosis and decision-making in improving the current maintenance management technologies. Eight Polytechnics are selected on the basis of the major problems of using the conventional method in the comparison to investigate the maintenance management practices in each Polytechnic. There are around 32 Polytechnics in Malaysia and most are using conventional methods. Findings The findings reveal the need for a more sophisticated maintenance management system that provides guidelines for decision-making processes with the implementation of ICT. The interview results also reveal irregularities within the Malaysian Polytechnics’ maintenance management database. The system architecture and the information system prototype are presented to integrate the information database and maintenance management processes in improving the building diagnosis approach and decision-making process for managing building maintenance. Originality/value This new system is expected to become the successful technology in assisting the maintenance contractors, clients and developer for effective management of maintenance defects at Polytechnic.

Computer Application (CA) is a branch of study responsible for the creation of software and applications. It is primarily focused on software technologies and allied areas. Computer Application is available as an academic program and professional area to become industry professionals. The field started during the 1980s and gradually developed in different higher educational institutions in India. Moreover, the branch Computer Application started and still offered in India only. Initially, the branch was started as an alternative field of existing Computer Science. Computer Science is purely concentrated on theoretical areas and mathematical concentration but Computer Application was started with a primary focus on software technologies and development. Initially, Computer Application branch started with Master’s program rather Bachelors program. It has started with three years program for Bachelor’s degree in any stream rather typical criteria of Bachelor’s Degree in concerned/ related/ allied field of study. Computer Application is today offered in different duration with different eligibility criteria. This paper discusses in general, an overview of Computing and Information Technology emphasizes on Computer Application. Paper highlighted the multiple entry options in MCA program with multiple durations in Indian universities with special emphasis to the Private universities.

AbstractAnswer Set Programming (ASP) is a popular logic programming paradigm that has been applied for solving a variety of complex problems. Among the most challenging real-world applications of ASP are two industrial problems defined by Siemens: the Partner Units Problem (PUP) and the Combined Configuration Problem (CCP). The hardest instances of PUP and CCP are out of reach for state-of-the-art ASP solvers. Experiments show that the performance of ASP solvers could be significantly improved by embedding domain-specific heuristics, but a proper effective integration of such criteria in off-the-shelf ASP implementations is not obvious. In this paper the combination of ASP and domain-specific heuristics is studied with the goal of effectively solving real-world problem instances of PUP and CCP. As a byproduct of this activity, the ASP solverwaspwas extended with an interface that eases embedding new external heuristics in the solver. The evaluation shows that our domain-heuristic-driven ASP solver finds solutions for all the real-world instances of PUP and CCP ever provided by Siemens.
