The possibility of modification of oxidized petroleum bitumen 70/100 produced by JSC "Ukrtatnafta" (Kremenchuk, Ukraine) with maleic anhydride was studied. The influence of maleic anhydride amount, process duration, and temperature on the main physical and mechanical characteristics of modified bitumen was studied. The optimal amount of maleic anhydride introduction to bitumen was established. It is found that 2 wt. % maleic anhydride allows to increase the softening temperature of the modified bitumen (from 46 °C to 52 °C). Adhesion to crushed stone also increases (from 2.5 points to 4.5 points) and other indicators improve. Sufficient time to modify the bitumen with maleic anhydride was 30 minutes. The optimum modification temperature for obtaining the modified bitumen with maleic anhydride is 130 °C. Increasing the temperature of the modification has a negative effect on the final physical and mechanical properties of the binder.

Abstract This study aims to determine the volumetric values consisting of VIM, VMA and VFB on the binder layer mixture using HRS-WC gradation using petroleum bitumen as a binder. The method used in this research is experimental method in laboratory. In this study, variations of asphalt content used were 5.5%, 6.0%, 6.5%, 7.0% dan 7.5%. These variations were obtained from the calculation of effective asphalt level of 5.9%. The results show that the VIM values decreases along with the increase of bitumen content used. VIM values obtained were 6.69%, 5.82%, 5.18%, 4.42% and 3.34%, respectively. The VMA values obtained were 18.12%, 18.38%, 18.84%, 19.21% and 19.30% for each bitumen content. Besides that, the value of VFB is also taken into account and the values obtained for each quality of bitumen content are 63.10%, 68.41%, 72.57%, 76.99% and 82.71%.

Aging peculiarities of paving bitumen, which was obtained by different ways, have been studied. Oxidized and residual bitumen produced from oils of Ukrainian deposits were used and the changes in the main characteristics of bitumen after 5 and 10 h of aging in a thin film at the temperature of 436 K have been determined and the processes occurred during the aging have been studied. Using infrared spectroscopy, the changes in the structural composition of the binder during aging have been analyzed.

In the work the bituminous-polymeric composition stable against action of external factors is designed taking into account literature-patent researches and industrial needs. The basic physical-mechanical and thermophysical properties of the designed bituminous-polymeric composition are investigated, and also change of water absorption, shrinkage with time and flammability is studying. The technology of manufacturing bitumen-polymer composition in production is described. The designed bituminous-polymeric composition on some indicators, in particular on heat resistance and flexibility is better than existing analogs that allows its introduction.

The paper presents the studies on the compositions selection and properties of polymer-bitumen binders obtained using the viscous petroleum bitumen, styrene-butadiene-styrene polymer and plasticizer according to the experimental planning method. Regression equations of the polymer-bitumen binders processing and performance properties, which make it possible to optimize the compositions and predict their properties taking into account the operating conditions, were obtained. Polymer-bitumen binders in comparison with the properties of viscous road bitumen have the increased indicators of heat resistance, crack toughness, ductility and elasticity. To obtain the adequate mathematical model, the experimental data were processed, compositions were optimized and dependence diagrams were constructed by using the Maple software package. The software for a personal computer including the algorithm and program for selecting the polymer-bitumen binders has been developed. When using the software it is possible to automate the calculation of the polymer-bitumen binders compositions with a given set of technical properties.

The most urgent in the oil refining industry, along with the deepening of oil refining, are the problems of improving the quality of oil products, which include heavy oil residues, such as bitumen. Despite the widespread use of petroleum bitumen in road construction, the demand for bitumen is not fully satisfied, because the quality of many bituminous materials does not fully meet the modern requirements of the construction industry.Conformance of bitumen obtained by synthetic method for using it in road construction was reviewed in this article. Some main physical and chemical properties of bitumen were described. Received results meet with specification and we can make the conclusion that synthesized bitumen can be used for road surface.

The practice of operating highways in the Republic of Kazakhstan shows that the durability of asphalt concrete pavements on them is much lower than the standard terms. Therefore, the maintenance of highways in a condition that meets the requirements of traffic flows is impossible without the use of new, progressive materials and technologies. The main factor affecting a sharp decrease in the service life of road surfaces is the use of lowquality bitumen in asphalt-concrete mixtures as a binder, since microcracks develop mainly in its film. The article deals with artificially synthesized bitumens of the Aktau bitumen plant: The following indicators of petroleum bitumen were studied: penetration, extensibility properties, brittleness temperature, softening and ignition temperature. It has been proven that the results obtained correspond to the technical specifications.

Aggregate is the main thing in asphalt mixtures with a percentage of about 70% to 80%. The aggregate used should meet the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) before being used in the asphalt mixture. East Kalimantan Province is one of the provinces in Indonesia which always brings in aggregates from outside the region for road construction. This study aims to analyze the modulus of stiffness of the AC-WC mixture using local aggregate of East Kalimantan Province and petroleum bitumen grade 60/70 as a binder due to water immersion. This research is experimental in the laboratory. The variation of the petroleum bitumen content used was 4.5, 5.0, 5.5, 6.0 and 6.5%. Water immersion was carried out at the age of 3, 5 and 7 days. The results showed that at 3 days of immersion, the resilient modulus values obtained at petroleum bitumen content of 4.5, 5.0, 5.5, 6.0 and 6.5% were 421.0, 506.0, 872.5, 747.0 and 648.5 MPa, respectively. At 5 days immersion, the resilient modulus values obtained were 383.5, 386.0, 915.5, 561.0 and 555.5 MPa, respectively. Whereas for the 7 days immersion, the resilient modulus were 290.5, 425.5, 1369.0, 547.5 and 525.0 MPa, respectively. It can be seen that water immersion greatly affects the stiffness modulus of the asphalt mixture. This stiffness will cause the asphalt mixture to be easily damaged or cracked. This can be caused by the influence of the sub-standard aggregates used, namely Senoni stone and Mahakam sand. Doi: 10.28991/cej-2021-03091652 Full Text: PDF
