Abstract: Leachate in landfill can be defined as a liquid that passes through a landfill a has extracted dissolved and suspended matter from it. Leachate generation is a major problem for municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills in many countries and it causes significant threat to surface water and ground water. To find the effect of leachate in the ground, ground water sample was collected from the surrounding areas of 1 km radius away from Kodungaiyur landfill and the samples were tested for various parameters such as colour, turbidity, pH, conductivity, total dissolved solids, total hardness, calcium, magnesium, chloride, sulphate, nitrate, fluoride, potassium, COD and BOD. Eight samples were collected from 1km away were collected. The parameters were compared with IS 10500:2012. The analysis helps us to understand how much the ground water is affected by the percolation of leachate. Keywords: Leachate, Hardness, Chloride, TDS, BOD, and COD

AbstractShallow Antarctic surface lakes belong to the most extreme aquatic environments on the Earth. In Vestfjella, proglacial surface lakes and ponds are characterized by a 2–5 month long period with liquid water and depths < 2 m. We give a detailed description of nine seasonal lakes and ponds situating at three nunataqs (Basen, Plogen and Fossilryggen) in western Dronning Maud Land. Their physical and geochemical properties are provided based on observations in four summers. Three main ‘lake categories‘ were found: 1) supraglacial lakes, 2) epiglacial ponds and 3) nunataq ponds. Category 3 lakes can be divided into two subgroups with regards to whether the meltwater source is glacial or just seasonal snow patches. Supraglacial lakes are ultra-oligotrophic (electrical conductivity < 10 μS cm−1, pH < 7), while in epiglacial ponds the concentrations of dissolved and suspended matter and trophic status vary over a wide range (electrical conductivity 20–110 μS cm−1, pH 6–9). In nunataq ponds, the maxima were an electrical conductivity of 1042 μS cm−1 and a pH of 10.1, and water temperature may have wide diurnal and day-to-day fluctuations (maximum 9.3°C) because snowfall, snow drift and sublimation influence the net solar irradiance.

Sanitary landfill is the most common way to eliminate solid waste. However, sanitary landfill generates large quantity of leachate. Leachate can be defined as a liquid that passes through a landfill and extracted dissolved and suspended matter. The presence of large quantity of contaminants in leachate is harmful to human and ecological environment. This can lead to health issues, including gastrointestinal illness, reproductive problems, and neurological disorders. There are several significant techniques have been made to overcome the problem of leachate pollution, including photocatalytic oxidation, adsorption/separation processing and bioremediation. However, the applications have been restricted by many factors, such as processing efficiency, operational method, energy requirements, and economic benefit. This present article provides an overview of research studies and advances concerned with the development of nanoparticles and their potential applications in leachate treatment. Nanoparticles can act as antimicrobial and function as reducing agent and catalyst in detoxification of pollutants in the environment, such as organic, inorganic and heavy metals. NPs have been suggested as efficient, cost-effective and environmental friendly alternative to existing treatment materials and presents a number of potential environmental benefits.
