The goal of this project was to explore how explicit instruction in spatial reasoning in primary grades can contribute to reductions in variation in STEM outcomes for low-income, minority students in the Chicago Public Schools (CPS). Our project focused on the persistent gender, racial and ethnic, and socioeconomic inequalities in STEM educational and career achievement and attainment. Our approach to addressing this problem was guided by research evidence that much of the variation in STEM outcomes for these groups can be explained by spatial reasoning abilities. Importantly, spatial reasoning skills can be improved through practice, but are rarely explicitly taught in the classroom. The spatial reasoning needs and opportunities identified by this work are relevant to CPS in that they focus on the prevalent science, math, and computer science curricula currently used in CPS K-2 instruction. As such, our findings provide specific, actionable guidance for the development of curricular supports that infuse explicit spatial reasoning instruction.

Employee retention among millennials has been garnering attention of many organizations especially the growing numbers of this generation in the workforce. Interestingly, this generation is observed to have unique characteristics that are different from the other generations, which one of them includes their habit of frequently switching jobs. This unique habit of them poses a threat to the organizations as there are costs involved during recruitment, hiring and training. Some identified factors that influences their retention are namely: 1) work-life balance, 2) awards, 3) opportunity for personal development, 4) career achievement and 5) company’s concern on the employee’s ability. This research aims to examine millennials’ expectation surrounding their current working activity and the degree of preferences among the five factors mentioned. Results of our study shows that in general, all above mentioned factors are present in the organization where they are working at. Whereas for their preferences, opportunity for personal development ranks first followed by work-life balance, career achievements, awards and lastly, the company’s concern on the employee’s ability.

Do personal names relate to career choice and career achievement? If so, how and why? We propose that uniqueness (vs. conformity), a dimension crucial for identity construction, may associate name (personal identity) with career (vocational identity). By testing a broad range of names and jobs, we identified a phenomenon—the name-job uniqueness fit—and revealed its benefit to career success. Seven studies (total N = 7.38 million) provided correlational, experimental, and real-world evidence for that holding more unique names (less used in the population) predicted choosing more unique jobs (less occupied in the workforce). The need for uniqueness partly explained the name-job uniqueness fit. Furthermore, better name-job uniqueness fit predicted higher career achievement. Importantly, the name-job relations remained positive when considering confounding factors (e.g., socioeconomic status) and alternative explanations (e.g., parental influences) and were replicated in the U.S., the U.K., and China (with some cross-cultural differences). Our findings provide a perspective on how and why personal names relate to career outcomes beyond past theories.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the effect of grit (consistency of interest and perseverance of effort) on entrepreneurial career success (career satisfaction, perceived career achievement and perceived financial attainment) through the role of resilience. Design/methodology/approach The study was cross-sectional, and the data were collected using questionnaires from 111 entrepreneurs in Nigeria who have been in business for over five years and were selected using purposive sampling technique. The study used Smart-PLS to assess the measurement and structural model. Findings The perseverance of effort was related to all the aspects of career success as well as resilience. But consistency of interest was positively related to only perceived financial attainment. It also predicted resilience. Resilience was also related to all the facets of career success. All three mediation hypotheses were supported. Research limitations/implications The study delivered fascinating understandings into the structures of grit. The Western conceptualisation of grit may not be valid in a collectivist society where consistency is not that very much considered. Practical implications The study helps to further validate grit in the entrepreneurship field; the construct is a facilitator of entrepreneurial action and an indispensable source of energy that can revitalise the entrepreneur along the arduous road to success. Originality/value The two components of grit can have a dissimilar influence on different outcomes – as prior investigations, although recognising that the two components are conceptually dissimilar, have rarely studied them so empirically.
