As design-based research, this study describes the development and analysis of two location-based augmented reality (AR) serious learning games (SLG) for French second language (FL2) learning. Explorez and VdeUVic are collaborative quest-based SLGs. At different locations on campus, players interact with characters that give them quests including clues or options to further the storyline. These interactions take place in the form of either written text, or audio and video recordings, encouraging students to develop language skills both written and oral. Students choose their own learning path and advance at their own pace. Three cohorts of FL2 university students play-tested the games, with 58 of the 77 students choosing to participate in the study. The design-based research framework for the development of the game iterations and subsequent testing was an iterative process with each stage producing output that became input for the next stage. The evaluation of the AR language tools was implemented by means of a mixed-method case study, collecting data of both a qualitative and quantitative nature, through pre and post-play questionnaires, interviews, and video recordings of student gameplay interactions for analysis. Informed by situated cognition, one of the goals was to provide a contextual and immersive learning experience. Additionally, this research drew on sociocultural theory and the social nature of language learning, emphasizing learner interactions as a principal learning force. This research examined the learners’ perceptions of their learning experience, as well as the ways in which students collaborated to complete the tasks. Employing a situative approach framework informed by social regulation and content processing, student learning patterns were examined. Distinct types of learner interactions amongst teams during gameplay were shown. Patterns in the emergence of learners’ high-level co-regulation during collaborative learning are indicated in the findings. Key elements for the development and implementation of location-based serious games to foster collaborative learning are highlighted.

The article presents an attempt to describe mathematically the effect of the semantic kernel of a web resource on the Internet. In accordance with the theory of marketing, the product that we want to sell on the network is characterized by the following basic properties: price, time and place. In other words, a potential buyer wants to receive a given product in the right place at a given time. To satisfy this need, it is necessary to use the classic component of marketing, product promotion. However, this component is now becoming a fully virtual instrument. This tool functions in a hypertext, video and image environment. Therefore, the user analyzes the meaning of these elements in order to get the desired product. The results of web projects carried out in this area indicate the emergence of a new phenomenon, which reflects the main meaning of virtual promotion – this is the semantic core. The core is a short annotation of the main properties of the product, its location and time of appearance. Therefore, the purpose of this article is both a presentation of a new object of research and a mathematical description. It is assumed that the semantic core is formed on the basis of natural language terms. In other words, the semantic core is a set of keywords that are grouped by meaning. We propose to use data mining approaches for clustering to group terms. The classic clustering method at the moment is k-means. The article presents a model of the semantic core based on this method. This method and its distance function are considered as the second stage of web content processing. At the first stage, web content is converted into a semantic web. However, the k-means technique has significant drawbacks when modeling the semantic core. Therefore, in the development of this idea, the work shows an alternative way to modeling the kernel. As an alternative approach, the construction of clusters based on the concept of maximum flow is considered. This approach has the significant advantage that the type of links in the semantic network overlaps with the type of distance function in this method. As a result, on a real web project, the effect of the connection between the semantic core model and the level of new users of the web resource was demonstrated over the past five years. Keywords: semantic kernel, keyword, k-means, max flow.

The digitalization in education poses a challenge for higher education to form students’ digital competencies, including interaction through digital technologies, information and data management, the ability to solve various problems in the use of information and communication technologies, integration and digital content processing. The purpose of this study is to identify the level of formation of digital competencies of cadets of the Academy of the EMERCOM of Russia. The research was carried out at the State Fire Academy of the EMERCOM of Russia with 168 first-year students. Main research methods: survey, conversation and interview. The results of the study illustrate a lack of students’ digital competence, in particular, information digital competencies (knowledge of the essence of digital footprint and cyber shadow) and digital competence of communication and cooperation (compliance with precautions when working on the Internet). Digital competence of 80 % of respondents was low: they have not heard anything about the concepts of “digital footprint” and “cyber shadow” and don’t take special precautions when working on the Internet. 15 % of the respondents had an average level of development of digital competencies: they are familiar with these concepts, but found it difficult to identify their essential content characteristics and precautions when working on the Internet. 5 % of the respondents have a high level of development of digital competencies: they know and understand the meaning of the concepts of “digital footprint” and “cyber shadow”, and observe precautions when working on the Internet. According to the results of the study, the authors came to the conclusion that there is a need for information and methodological support of students in this direction, which implies the integration of digital material into the content of disciplines, the inclusion of elective classes, the introduction of digital modules and additional educational programs.

Modern information technologies provide text manipulation processes with high efficiency. First of all, this means storing, editing, and formatting texts and their components. Having achieved significant success in developing tools for content-free computer text processing, researchers faced problems with their content processing. Therefore, further steps in this direction are associated with the creation, among other things, of methods for automated purposeful manipulation of texts, taking into account their content. The analysis of works devoted to the study of the problems of formal presentation of texts and their subsequent use is carried out. Despite a number of successful projects, the challenges of solving the problem of the relationship between the content of the text and its meaning remain relevant. It seems that formalization of a General-purpose text while preserving its semantics is not feasible at this stage. However, there are types of texts that can be formalized while preserving their semantics. One of them is a regulatory text type, which is essentially a verbally expressed algorithm for a sequence of targeted actions. It is distinguished by logic and accuracy (lack of allegories), coherence and integrity, clarity, understandability (due to the lack of emotional coloring and figurative means), accessibility (due to the use of specific terminology). In other words, when developing regulatory texts, they usually try to display the mechanisms of the described actions as clearly as possible. Purpose: development of a method for formalizing a regulatory text while preserving its semantics. Methods: structural linguistics, representation of objects in the form of an ontology, constructive algorithms. The use of this method is demonstrated by describing the solution of a system of algebraic equations. Results: method for constructing a mathematical model of a regulatory text. Practical relevance: the application of the developed method makes it possible to develop software systems for building libraries of individual subject areas, develop tools for evaluating regulatory texts for their certainty, completeness, connectivity and other characteristics, as well as simulators and self-learning tools.

Digital content presented to the viewer usually has to be processed by the device on which is displayed, in case of internet content processing is done by hosting server and user device with additional download time. Time elapsed for these tasks differs depending on the quantity of the data and complexity of the processing needed. Waiting time for content to be displayed can have significant influence on the user experience. Loading animations are often used to divert viewers’ attention or to provide viewer with the information about the process progress, estimated time, etc. Performance of these animation can differ depending on their type, elements or even a story. This paper presents analysis of the performance and viewer perception of different loading animations. Survey and eye tracking were used to gain insight in to the viewer’s perception of the loading animation. Results show noticeable differences caused by loading animation type.
