This article handles building underwater sensor networks autonomously using multiple surface ships. For building underwater sensor networks in 3D workspace with many obstacles, this article considers surface ships dropping underwater robots into the underwater workspace. We assume that every robot is heterogeneous, such that each robot can have a distinct sensing range while moving with a distinct speed. The proposed strategy works by moving a single robot at a time to spread out the underwater networks until the 3D cluttered workspace is fully covered by sensors of the robots, such that no sensing hole remains. As far as we know, this article is novel in enabling multiple heterogeneous robots to build underwater sensor networks in a 3D cluttered environment, while satisfying the following conditions: (1) Remove all sensing holes. (2) Network connectivity is maintained. (3) Localize all underwater robots. In addition, we address how to handle the case where a robot is broken, and we discuss how to estimate the number of robots required, considering the case where an obstacle inside the workspace is not known a priori. Utilizing MATLAB simulations, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed network construction methods.

With the development of e-commerce, the last-mile delivery has become a significant part of customers’ shopping experience. In this paper, an autonomous last-mile delivery method using multiple unmanned ground vehicles is investigated. Being a smart logistics service, it provides a promising solution to reduce the delivery cost, improve efficiency, and avoid the spread of airborne diseases, such as SARS and COVID-19. By using a cooperation strategy with multiple heterogeneous robots, contactless parcel delivery can be carried out within apartment complexes efficiently. In this paper, the last-mile delivery with heterogeneous UGVs is formulated as an optimization problem aimed at minimizing the maximum makespan to complete all tasks. Then, a heuristic algorithm combining the Floyd’s algorithm and PSO algorithm is proposed for task assignment and path planning. This algorithm is further realized in a distributed scheme, with all robots in a swarm working together to obtain the best task schedule. A good solution with an optimized makespan is achieved by considering the constraints of various robots in terms of speed and payload. Simulations and experiments are carried out and the obtained results confirm the validity and applicability of the developed approaches.

In the future, heterogeneous robots are expected to perform more complex tasks in a cooperative manner, and the onboard navigation system is required to be capable of working safely and effectively in the area where GNSS signal is weak or even could not be received. To demonstrate this concept, we have developed a cooperative navigation system by the use of Ground-Aerial Vehicle Cooperation. The key innovations of the development lie in the following aspects: (1) a local scalable self-organizing network is constructed for data interaction between a small UAV and a reusable ground robot; (2) a new navigation framework is proposed to achieve visual simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) where carrying capacity of both the ground vehicle and UAV are systematically considered; (3) an octomap-based 3D environment reconstruction method is developed to achieve map pre-establishment in complex navigation environments, and the classic ORB-SLAM2 system is improved to be adaptive to actual environment exploration and perception. In-door flight experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed solution. More interestingly, by implementing a centroid tracking algorithm, the cooperative system is further capable of tracking a man moving in indoor environments.

Multi-robot systems (MRSs) are currently being used to perform agricultural tasks. In this regard, the deployment of heterogeneous MRSs will be essential for achieving more efficient and innovative farming in the future. In this paper, we propose a multiplicatively weighted (MW) Voronoi-based task-allocation scheme for heterogeneous agricultural robots. The seed points for area partitioning using a Voronoi diagram are obtained by performing node clustering using a k-means clustering algorithm. Heterogeneous robots have different specifications for performing various tasks. Thus, the proposed MW Voronoi-based area partitioning for heterogeneous robots is applied by considering various weighting factors. The path for each robot is computed such that the robot follows the nodes, and the computed paths serve as inputs for the workload distribution strategy that assigns paths to the robots. Simulations and field experiments were conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
