The origin and mantle dynamics of the Quaternary intraplate sodic and potassic volcanism in northeast China have long been intensely debated. We present a high-resolution, three-dimensional (3-D) crust and upper-mantle S-wave velocity (Vs) model of northeast China by combining ambient noise and earthquake two-plane wave tomography based on unprecedented regional dense seismic arrays. Our seismic images highlight a strong correlation between the basalt geochemistry and upper-mantle seismic velocity structure: Sodic volcanoes are all characterized by prominent low seismic velocities in the uppermost mantle, while potassic volcanoes still possess a normal but thin upper-mantle “lid” depicted by high seismic velocities. Combined with previous petrological and geochemical research findings, we propose that the rarely erupted Quaternary potassic volcanism in northeast China results from the interaction between asthenospheric low-degree melts and the overlying subcontinental lithospheric mantle. In contrast, the more widespread Quaternary sodic volcanism in this region is predominantly sourced from the upwelling asthenosphere without significant overprinting from the subcontinental lithospheric mantle.

Abstract Potassic volcanic rocks are characteristic of collisional tectonic zones, with recycling of continental crust playing an important role in their generation. Potassium-rich partial melts and/or fluids derived from subducted continental material initiate and/or mix with mantle-derived melts and then erupt at the surface with varying degrees of interaction with the overlying lithosphere. The details of how continental material incorporates into mantle melts are, however, uncertain. In particular, the depths from which the potassium-rich fluids and/or melts are released from the continental material and then react with the mantle-derived melts remain a subject of debate. We have measured the boron isotope composition of volcanic rocks from Western Anatolia (Turkey) that erupted between 52 and 0.1 Ma, and span the lifetime of collisional events from initial arc-type eruptions to post-collisional volcanism. These data and other geochemical indices show that ultrapotassic volcanism was mainly confined to a narrow window between ca. 20 and 15 Ma, consistent with recycling of high-pressure phengite, with the timing of the potassic volcanism coincident with slab rollback and breakoff.

Abstract Long-standing debates exist over the timing and mechanism of uplift of the Tibetan Plateau and, more specifically, over the connection between lithospheric evolution and surface expressions of plateau uplift and volcanism. Here we show a T-shaped high wave speed structure in our new tomographic model beneath South-Central Tibet, interpreted as an upper-mantle remnant from earlier lithospheric foundering. Its spatial correlation with ultrapotassic and adakitic magmatism supports the hypothesis of convective removal of thickened Tibetan lithosphere causing major uplift of Southern Tibet during the Oligocene. Lithospheric foundering induces an asthenospheric drag force, which drives continued underthrusting of the Indian continental lithosphere and shortening and thickening of the Northern Tibetan lithosphere. Surface uplift of Northern Tibet is subject to more recent asthenospheric upwelling and thermal erosion of thickened lithosphere, which is spatially consistent with recent potassic volcanism and an imaged narrow low wave speed zone in the uppermost mantle.
