Abstract The purpose of the study was to determine the species vegetation and carbon stock assessment derived from abandoned aquaculture ponds. Analysis of plant (tree, sapling, and seedling) was performed at Pulau Sembilan, Langkat, North Sumatra, Indonesia. The stage of the seedlings, saplings, and trees was analyzed from four transects. Each transect contained 100 m in length. Each estimated plot of a total of four transects comprised of 30 plots. The abandoned pond was dominated by Rhizophora apiculata and Bruguiera parviflora, the lowest on the species of Morinda citrifolia and Rhizophora mucronata. The diversity index of Shannon-Weiner was 1.44-1.72. The total biomass in the pond was 4,557.43 k/ha with a carbon potential of 2.10 tons/ha.

Abstract. Nurdiana DR, Buot IE Jr. 2021. Vegetation community and species association of Castanopsis spp. at its habitat in the remnant forest of Cibodas Botanical Garden, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 22: 4799-4807. Castanopsis is one of the genera of Fagaceae with a large distribution in Indonesia. The genus can be found easily in Java, Sumatera and Kalimantan. Several studies have found an association between Castanopsis and environmental factors dealing with the diversity, dispersal and propagation. So far, there has been no agreement on how Castanopsis interacts with other species within the same genus in nature, especially in the remnant forest under a fragmented state. The objectives of the study were to determine the vegetation associated with Castanopsis and whether each species of the genus Castanopsis co-occur within the remnant forest? A total of 60 plots have been studied in 3 different sites of the remnant forest. The nested sampling method was used to identify the trees, saplings and seedlings. Sixty-seven total species of trees, 140 species of saplings and 121 species of seedlings in Cibodas Botanical Garden remnant forest were recorded. The diversity index for tree, sapling and seedling were 3.5, 3.9 and 4.1, respectively, while evenness index for tree, sapling and seedling were 0.81, 0.8 and 0.85 respectively. The interspecific association of the genus Castanopsis was restricted to C. javanica x C. tungurrut. They are associated positively at sapling stage with Jaccard index of 0.2. However, at tree stage, there was no association out of the pair, C. javanica x C. tungurrut. Competition within genus Castanopsis occurred in the same habitat, though at a lesser degree which needs to be studied further. Dominance of many pioneer species (Oreocnide integrifolia (Gaudich.) Miq., Ostodes paniculata Blume, Cestrum aurantiacum Lindl. and others) at tree stage had been evident. This implies that the Cibodas remnant forest is still in the process of succession towards a more stable climax state.

 An analysis of the growth dynamics of a 1-ha  (100 m x 100 m) permanent plot was carried out in the Danau Bangko Protected Area (DBPA) in March 2020. DBPA is part of the industrial plantation forest concession of PT Rimba Hutani Mas (PT RHM) in Jambi Province. The study aims to determine the dynamics of vegetation structure and composition between 2018 and 2020 in early regeneration forest. All trees tagged in 2018 were remeasured in 2020. Trees that had not been tagged previously but were 10 cm in diameter at breast height (DBH) were identified as a new recruit and tagged with a new number. Observations and data analysis were carried out on three stages of growth phases, namely in the tree phase ( 10 cm DBH), sapling phase (10 cm DBH), and seedling phase (height 1.5 m). The results showed that the number of species, genera, and families within the tree and sapling phases were high, but were low in the seedling phase. The dominant species in the tree phase in 2018,  Alseodaphne bancana,  had been  replaced by Archidendron bubalinum  in 2020, whereas the dominant species in the sapling phase (Rothmania sp.) and seedling phase (Aporusa microsphaera) remained the same from  2018  to 2020 . Mortality rates in all growth phases (tree, sapling and seedling) together is 4.67%. Recruitment into the tree phase from 2018 to 2020 was 2.67%,  consisting of eight species, eight genera, and seven families. Within one hectare permanent plot, all members of each tree species were distributed randomly. The vertical structure of the forest area is dominated by stratum C (4-20 m height). The results of hypothesis testing for each phase (tree, sapling, seedling) were different, however overall the results showed that the plot structure and composition had changed. Studi dinamika hutan dilakukan di Kawasan Lindung Danau Bangko (KLDB) pada Maret 2020 dengan menggunakan pendekatan plot permanen seluas satu hektar (100 m x 100 m). KLDB merupakan bagian dari konsesi hutan tanaman industri PT Rimba Hutani Mas (PT RHM) di Provinsi Jambi. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui dinamika struktur dan komposisi vegetasi antara pengukuran tahun 2018 dan 2020, khususnya pada areal dengan tutupan Belukar Tua (BT). Diameter semua pohon yang telah diberi tanda nomor pada tahun 2018 diukur kembali. Pohon yang belum diberi tanda sebelumnya tetapi diameternya 10 cm setinggi dada (DBH) ditetapkan sebagai rekrutmen baru dan diberi tanda dengan nomor baru. Pengamatan dan analisis data dilakukan terhadap tiga tahap tahap pertumbuhan, yaitu tingkat pohon (10 cm DBH), tingkat pancang (10 cm DBH), dan tingkat semai (tinggi 1,5 m). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa jumlah spesies, jumlah marga, dan jumlah famili pada tingkat pohon dan pancang tinggi, sedangkan pada tingkat semai rendah. Jenis dominan pada tingkat pohon pada tahun 2018 adalah Alseodaphne bancana telah digantikan oleh Archidendron bubalinum pada tahun 2020, sedangkan pada tingkat pancang (Rothmania sp) dan tingkat semai (Aporusa microsphaera) merupakan jenis yang dominan baik pada tahun 2018 maupun pada tahun 2020. Angka kematian pada semua tahapan pertumbuhan bervariasi dengan rata-rata 4,67%. Rekrutmen di tingkat pohon 2,67% yang terdiri dari 8 spesies, 8 marga, dan 7 famili. Secara keseluruhan, semua spesies tersebar secara acak. Tinggi tajuk pohon didominasi oleh stratum C (tinggi 4 m - 20 m). Hasil pengujian hipotesis pada setiap tingkatan (pohon, pancang, semai) berbeda, namun hasil penggabungan semua data menunjukkan bahwa telah terjadi dinamika.

Critical posthumanism is an invitation to think differently about knowledge and educational relationality between humans and the more-than-human. This philosophical and political shift in subjectivity builds on, and is entangled with, poststructuralism and phenomenology. In this paper we read diffractively through one another the theories of Finnish architect Juhani Pallasmaa and feminist posthumanists Karen Barad and Rosi Braidotti. We explore the implications of the so-called ‘ontological turn’ for early childhood education. With its emphasis on a moving away from the dominant role of human vision (knowing and seeing) in educational research we show how videoing and photographing works as an apparatus in an analysis of data from an inner-city school in Johannesburg, South Africa. We are struck by children’s seeing with the ‘eyes of their skin’ (Pallasmaa) and ‘seeing’ with/in the world (posthumanism), as their obvious distress is felt when a small tree sapling has been mowed down in a nearby park. We analyse the event with the help of a variation on Deleuze’s notion of ‘becoming-child’: ‘becoming-little’, and Anna Tsing’s ‘the arts of noticing’. ‘Becoming-little’ as a methodology disrupts the adult/child binary that positions ‘little’, younger humans as inferior to their ‘bigger’ fully human counterparts. We exemplify ‘becoming-little’ through 4 and 5 year-olds’ learning with the little tree and adopt Barad’s temporal diffraction to ‘see’ what is in/visible in the park: the extractive, exploitative, colonising mining practices of White settlers. These are still part of the land on which the park was created but are in/visible beneath the ‘skin’ of the earth.

The research entitled Autecolgical study of Areca vestaria in Sub-Montane Forest Lore Lindu National Park at Toro village area has been conducted from April to May 2016. The objective of the research was to know the biotics and abiotics factor arround the habitat of Areca vestiaria. The results showed that The highest important value index (IVI) of tree, sapling, pole and seedling species wereFicus ampelos (68.69%), Aphanaximis polistachy (40.01%), Ardisia lateriflora (31.73%) and Ardisia lateriflora (19.23%) respectively. The insects  actively interacted with A. vestaria were black ant and bee. Based on soil analyzed indicated that pH  of soil 6.6 while N, P and organic matter concentration  were 0.26, 0.207 mg/g and 76.1% respectively. A. vestaria grew under light intensity of 540.4 lux, humidity of 76.1% and average daily temperature of 24.4%.

Anticipating how boreal forest landscapes will change in response to changing fire regime requires disentangling the effects of various spatial controls on the recovery process of tree saplings. Spatially explicit monitoring of post-fire vegetation recovery through moderate resolution Landsat imagery is a popular technique but is filled with ambiguous information due to mixed pixel effects. On the other hand, very-high resolution (VHR) satellite imagery accurately measures crown size of tree saplings but has gained little attention and its utility for estimating leaf area index (LAI, m2/m2) and tree sapling abundance (TSA, seedlings/ha) in post-fire landscape remains untested. We compared the explanatory power of 30 m Landsat satellite imagery with 0.5-m WorldView-2 VHR imagery for LAI and TSA based on field sampling data, and subsequently mapped the distribution of LAI and TSA based on the most predictive relationships. A random forest (RF) model was applied to assess the relative importance and causal mechanisms of spatial controls on tree sapling recovery. The results showed that pixel percentage of canopy trees (PPCT) derived from VHR imagery outperform all Landsat-derived spectral indices for explaining variance of LAI (R2VHR = 0.676 vs. R2Landsat = 0.427) and TSA (R2VHR = 0.508 vs. R2Landsat = 0.499). The RF model explained an average of 55.5% (SD = 3.0%, MSE = 0.382, N = 50) of the variation of estimated LAI. Understory vegetation coverage (competition) and post-fire surviving mature trees (seed sources) were the most important spatial controls for LAI recovery, followed by burn severity (legacy effect), topographic factors (environmental filter) and nearest distance to unburned area (edge effect). These analyses allow us to conclude that in our study area, mitigating wildfire severity and size may increase forest resilience to wildfire damage. Given the easily-damaged seed banks and relatively short seed dispersal distance of coniferous trees, reasonable human help to natural recovery of coniferous forests is necessary for severe burns with a large patch size, particularly in certain areas. Our research shows the VHR WorldView-2 imagery better resolves key characteristics of forest landscapes like LAI and TSA than Landsat imagery, providing a valuable tool for land managers and researchers alike.
