The mangrove ecosystem holds a lot of potentials to be utilized by local communities in the Riau Coastline. Therefore, this study was carried out to assess the biodiversity of flora and fauna in the Riau Coastline mangrove ecosystem and its impacts on local communities. The transect was performed to identify soil conditions, distribution, and the dominance of flora species, while field observations and interviews with residents were conducted to determine the presence of fauna and discover the ecosystem’s benefit to the local community's economy. Based on the results, Rhizophora mucronata and Rhizophora apiculata has the highest relative dominance (RDC) and important value index in all observed stations. On the other hand, the fish/water biota species has the highest diversity and have economic that mostly serve as a catch for local fishermen. Ecotourism is also encouraged to boost the community's economy and aid ecological learning for sustainability purposes. The mangrove ecosystem's existence remains sustainable because fisheries are the main commodity, however, logging is less desirable as a source of income.

Abstract Survival of mangrove seedlings under flooding depends on their tolerance and adaptation. This study investigated the effects of flooding on rhizosphere conditions: porewater dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, and soil oxidation–reduction potential (ORP) and photosynthetic and antioxidant activities (superoxide dismutase [SOD] and guaiacol peroxidase [POX] activity and glutathione [GSH] content) of Rhizophora mucronata seedlings. The experiment lasted 20 days with three treatments: control (with drainage), waterlogging (10 cm of water above the soil surface) and submergence. Our results demonstrate that waterlogging and submergence resulted in a reduction in porewater DO, pH and soil ORP from day 5 into the treatment. Submergence resulted in lower maximum electron transport rates, lower saturating irradiance and higher light utilization efficiency from day 5 onwards, but stomatal closure was detected in both flooded treatments. POX activity and GSH content in the roots were increased by submergence. On day 5, submerged plants showed higher root POX activity than the other two treatments and higher root GSH content than controls. However, these parameters decreased on day 20, so that no difference among the treatments remained. As persistent flooding was shown to hamper the physiological performance of mangrove seedlings, extreme weather events and sea-level rise should be closely monitored.

Abstract The bark extract of Rhizophora mucronata (BERM) was recently reported for its prominent in vitro protective effects against liver cell line toxicity caused by various toxicants, including ethanol. Here, we aimed to verify the in vivo hepatoprotective effects of BERM against ethanol intoxication. An oral administration of different concentrations (100, 200, and 400 mg/kg) of BERM prior to high-dose ethanol via intraperitoneal injection was performed in mice. On the 7th day, liver and kidney sections were dissected out for histopathological examination. The ethanol intoxication caused large areas of liver necrosis while the kidneys were not affected. Pre-BERM administration decreased ethanol-induced liver injury, as compared to the mice treated with ethanol alone. In addition, the pre-BERM administration resulted in a decrement in the level of ethanol-induced oxidative stress, revealed by a concomitant increase of GSH and a decrease of MDA hepatic levels. The BERM extract also reversed the ethanol-induced liver injury and hepatotoxicity, characterized by the low detection of TNF-α gene expression level and fragmented DNA, respectively. Altogether, BERM extract exerts antioxidative activities and present promising hepatoprotective effects against ethanol intoxication. The identification of the related bioactive compounds will be of interest for future use at physiological concentrations in ethanol-intoxicated individuals.

Abstract Mangrove forests are tropical and subtropical forests that grow typically along the coast or river estuaries. Black mangroves are a type of mangrove found in South Sulawesi, precisely in Maros, Pangkep, and Barru Districts. The decline in black mangrove populations overcomes the threat limit to germplasm which can lead to reduced genetic diversity in black mangrove plants. To reduce the incidence of extinction in black mangroves, information on genetic diversity using one of the markers is required, namely morphological markers in taking samples of tree parts taken, namely the leaves, stems, and roots which are then for monitoring carried out in the Biotechnology Laboratory and tree breeding. The method used in this study is based on the literature on the development of the Tropical Fruit Descriptor information system. The results of the three studies proved that there is a difference between the evidence and the interprovenencies. The very close morphological kinship between them proved to be found in Pangkep. Pangkep’s provenance has a high coefficient compared to the proof of Maros and Barru, which is at the time level of 70%, while the proof of Maros has the lowest coefficient compared to the proof of Barru and Pangkep, which is at the gathering level of 64%.

Abstract The purpose of the study was to determine the species vegetation and carbon stock assessment derived from abandoned aquaculture ponds. Analysis of plant (tree, sapling, and seedling) was performed at Pulau Sembilan, Langkat, North Sumatra, Indonesia. The stage of the seedlings, saplings, and trees was analyzed from four transects. Each transect contained 100 m in length. Each estimated plot of a total of four transects comprised of 30 plots. The abandoned pond was dominated by Rhizophora apiculata and Bruguiera parviflora, the lowest on the species of Morinda citrifolia and Rhizophora mucronata. The diversity index of Shannon-Weiner was 1.44-1.72. The total biomass in the pond was 4,557.43 k/ha with a carbon potential of 2.10 tons/ha.

Kawasan hutan mangrove memiliki keanekaragaman hayati dan biota yang beragam, kawasan ini potensial dikembangkan sebagai kawasan ekowisata bahari. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mengetahui indeks kesesuaian wisata, daya dukung kawasan, dan daya dukung pemanfaatan ekowisata mangrove di Desa Taddan Kecamatan Camplong Kabupaten Sampang. Metode pengambilan data mangrove menggunakan transek garis dan plot (Line Transect Plot). Hasil penelitian mendapatkan jenis mangrove di lokasi penelitian adalah Rhizophora stylosa, Rhizophora mucronata, Rhizophora apiculata, Sonneratia alba, Avicennia marina, dan Aegiceras cornitulatum. Kesesuaian kawasan untuk dimanfaatkan sebagai kawasan ekowisata bahari kategori mangrove untuk semua stasiun pada kondisi sesuai bersyarat. Daya dukung kawasan menunjukkan hasil kemampuan suatu kawasan dalam menyediakan ruang bagi pemanfaatan sebanyak 199 orang per hari, sedangkan untuk per trip sebanyak 25 orang per trip. Daya dukung pemanfaatan dengan mempertimbangkan persentase kawasan untuk konservasi sebesar 10% maka diperoleh hasil sebanyak 20 orang per hari

Background : Pain is an unpleasant emotional experience that illustrates ongoing tissue damage. Excessive use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can cause peptic ulcer to gastric mucosal damage and perforation. Indonesia contains the largest area of mangrove forest in the world. There are 45 species of mangrove found and one of them is Asiatic Mangrove (Rhizophora mucronata). This type is easy to find and rich of alkaloids and flavonoids which can be used as analgesics. Method:  This study used post-test only control group design. The number of mice that used was 25 mice, divided into 5 groups. Which were given different therapies aquadest 10mL/KgBW, acetosal 150 mg/KgBW, extract of Rhizophora mucronata 250 mg/KgBW, 500 mg/KgBW, and 1000 mg/kg bw. The pain was induced by 0,7% glacial acetic acid at a dose of 10 mL/KgBW.  The writhes of the mice was being calculated with an interval of 10 minutes in 30 minutes. Result:  The results of the analysis showed the decrease in writhes of mice  in acetosal group dose 150 mg/kg bw, Rhizophora mucronata leaves extract dose 250 mg/kg bw, 500 mg/kg bw, and 1000 mg/kg bw. There was a significant difference in the results of the Mann-Whitney U test with p<0,05 in the aquadest group and the acetosal group with the Rhizophora mucronata leaves extract group dose 500 mg/kg bw, the difference between the acetosal group and the Rhizophora mucronata leaves extract group dose 250 mg/kg bw, and the difference between the Rhizophora mucronata leaves extract group dose 500 mg/kg bw and the Rhizophora mucronata leaves extract group dose 1000 mg/kg bw. Conclusion: Rhizophora mucronata leaves extract dose 500 mg/kg bw can provide analgesic effect and can reduce the writhing frequency in mice much better than acetosal group.

Mangrove species, viz., Avicennia officinalis, Avicennia marina var. acutissima, Avicennia marina (dwarf), Rhizophora mucronata, Sonneratia alba, Aegiceras  corniculatum, Kandelia  candel were chosen for measurement of height of the tree and girth or circumference. The sampling was random and at least 50 records were made. The girth is measured by the tape. The measurement of the height is made with the help of abny level. The Tables 1 to 8 records the values for girth, height and canopy cover as well as for correlation coefficient (r). There correlation between girth and canopy in all the species studied however in case of Avicennia officinalis and Aegiceras corniculatum girth and height show more co-relation than girth and C. cover. The positive co-relation observed between girth and canopy is more or less 0.7 except Avicennia marina (dwarf) Excoecaria agallocha and Aegiceras corniculatum. The co-relation is observed in girth and height is difficult to explain. This case is observed in Avicennia officinalis and Aegiceras corniculatum.

Abstract. Suwanto A, Takarina ND, Koestoer RH, Frimawaty E. 2021. Diversity, biomass, covers, and NDVI of restored mangrove forests in Karawang and Subang Coasts, West Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 22: 4115-4122. Indonesia has been recognized as the country with greatest diversity of mangrove species with significant amount of carbon sink and biomass. In few recent decades, mangrove forests have been deforested significantly. One of the solutions to deal with mangrove deforestation is through restoration. West Java north coasts are one of the areas that have experienced deforestation, however and mangrove restorations have been conducted mainly in Karawang and Subang coasts. Correspondingly this research aims to assess the mangrove diversity using index and biomass resulted from restoration program in those coasts. To assess the mangrove diversity in each coast on June 2021, 6 sampling stations containing 3 replicated sample plots of size 10 m × 10 m were located. In total 8 species with 1549 trees were been sampled. In Subang the order of mangrove species from common to less-common species were Avicennia marina > Rhizophora mucronata > Sonneratia caseolaris > Acanthus ilicifolius > Bruguiera gymnorhiza. While the order in Karawang was Avicennia marina > Rhizophora mucronata > Rhizophora apiculata > Sonneratia caseolaris > Bruguiera gymnorhiza. The mangrove diversity (H)’ was significantly different (p = 0.000, F = 2.216) with diversity in Subang Coast (average H' = 1.326, 95% CI: 1.15-1.5) was higher than in Karawang (average H’ = 1.063, 95%CI: 0.934-1.2). Estimated restored mangrove covers in Subang were 3.612 km2 and 0.46 km2 in Karawang. R. mucronata was mangrove species that has the highest biomass with the value of 1337.91 mg ha-1 and the lowest was A. marina with value of 14.3 mg ha-1. The results suggest that restoration areas in Subang and Karawang have significant contributions to maintain mangrove diversity, biomass, and covers.
