Abstract This study focuses on the adsorption of hazardous Cr (III) and Cu (II) ions from aqueous solution by applying modified waste polypropylene (PP) fabric as an adsorbent. Pre-irradiation technique was performed for grafting of sodium styrene sulfonate (SSS) and acrylic acid (AAc) onto the PP fabric. The monomer containing 8% SSS and 16% AAc in water was used. Graft yield at 30 kGy radiation dose was 390% when 4% NaCl was added as additive. The prepared adsorbent was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA) and dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA). The influences of different parameters including pH, contact time, temperature and initial metal ion concentration were also investigated. The equilibrium adsorption data were better fitted to the Langmuir isotherm model with maximum monolayer adsorption capacity 384.62 mg/g for Cr (III) and 188.68 mg/g for Cu (II) ions. The kinetic data were better explained by pseudo first-order kinetic model having good matching between the experimental and theoretical adsorption capacity. The adsorption process was spontaneous, endothermic and thermodynamically feasible. Furthermore, investigation of desorption of metal ions and reuse of the adsorbent suggesting that the adsorbent is an efficient and alternative material in the removal of Cr (III) and Cu (II) from aqueous media.

Abstract Roads are utilized by many vehicle kinds and heavy vehicles among these may be seen as the most essential for cargo loading, causing paving failure and increasing expenses for rehabilitation and maintenance. In this study, in analyzing a finite element employing Abaqus 6.14, composite effects for wheel loads and temperature were addressed. The asphalt layer was designed as an elastic material, while the base and sub-bases were modeled according to the Mohr coulomb model like an elastic material. And studying the impact of wheel loads on flexible pavement settlement and the main output of analyzing pavement structure is almost represented by the vertical stresses and the surface deformation which are considered as the critical response point. A truck type 2S-2 was tried with two thicknesses of asphalt layer 140 mm and 250 mm and considering that base and subbase layer thicknesses remained constant so it does not affect the variation of displacement. It was found that the increase of asphalt layer thickness from 140 mm to 250 mm leads to a decrease in the vertical displacement of about 0.59% and studied the effect of modified asphalt with polymer and how it effect pavement vertical displacement with an obvious reduction from 0.590 mm to 0.265 mm under the repeated load of 36 ton and The vertical stress decreased from 5.036 kPa to 1.899 kPa

A single type of thermoplastic polymer is easily recycled through a mechanical process, but this way can’t be followed in the presence of mixed or contaminated plastic. In this case, one of the main followed solutions is a thermochemical process and among them, microwave-assisted pyrolysis is one of the emerging technologies. This chapter offers an update of the microwave-assisted pyrolysis of mixed or contaminated waste plastic as a very promising example of chemical recycling. Furthermore, some unpublished results in this field will be reported such as the pyrolysis of waste lead containing polyethylene coming from end cycle batteries or the pyrolysis of waste polypropylene from facemasks used for covid protection. Finally, some examples of pilot plants will be described and commented as well as several industrial cooperations.

The global demand for fiber-based products is continuously increasing. The increased consumption and fast fashion current in the global clothing market generate a significant quantity of pre-and post-production waste that ends up in landfills and incinerators. The present study aims to obtain a new waste-based composite material panel for construction applications with improved mechanical properties that can replace traditional wood-based oriented strand boards (OSB). The new composite material is formed by using textile wastes as a reinforcement structure and a combination of bi-oriented polypropylene films (BOPP) waste, polypropylene non-woven materials (TNT) waste and virgin polypropylene fibers (PP) as a matrix. The mechanical properties of waste-based composite materials are modeled using the Taguchi method based on orthogonal arrays to maximize the composite characteristics’ mechanical properties. Experimental data validated the theoretical results obtained.

The demand for a better performing pavement and the need to convert the ever-growing polymer waste into beneficial use necessitated the need to develop and characterize a polypropylene modified concrete for use in pavement construction. This research focuses on characterizing the strength of concrete produced with waste polypropylene waste as modifiers for pavement construction. The materials used in this research are fine and coarse aggregates, cement and polypropylene waste chairs (PWC). Tests were performed on the aggregate and fresh concrete to determine their suitability and characteristics for use in concrete for pavement. Two concrete grades 1:2:4 and 1:3:6 was produced into 200 mm, 400 mm and 500 mm long paving stones on which compressive and flexural tests were performed. Results obtained showed that 400 mm 1:2:4 grade concrete has the highest compressive strength of 27.36 N/mm2 at 10% polypropylene composition. The 200 mm 1:2:4 concrete grade paving stone with 10% polyprpopylene composition has the highest flexural strength of 12.90 N/mm2. The 200 mm at 10% polypropylene composition correlation coefficient has that the highest value of 0.98 which better explains the compression-flexural strength relationship and validates the 200 mm length at 10% polypropylene composition paving stone as the most adequate length of paving stone for pavement construction. It was concluded that the 200 mm long 1:2:4 concrete grade paving stone at 10% polypropylene composition is the best length of paving stone that can give an adequate flexural strength which is the most important requirent in concrete pavement requirement.
