Abstract There is a strong focus on improving the energy efficiency of machines. Over the last 20-30 years, one way to improve energy efficiency has been to reduce lubricant viscosity. This also has the effect of leading to thinner oil films between the machine’s moving surfaces and is likely to lead to increased mixed/boundary friction. Accurately predicting friction in the mixed/boundary friction regime is therefore becoming of great importance. The work reported here suggests that commonly used asperity friction models significantly underestimate friction in the mixed/boundary friction, and a new model, based on a logistic curve fit, gives a better estimate of mixed/boundary friction, provides good agreement with experimental friction data (from Mini Traction Machine experiments), and is much more straightforward for engineers and tribologists to apply for the estimation of mixed/boundary friction losses.

Lubricant has been widely applied to reduce wear and friction between the contact surfaces when they are in relative motion. In the current study, a nonequilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) simulation was specifically established to conduct a comprehensive investigation on the dynamic contact between two iron surfaces in a boundary friction system considering the mixed C4-alkane and nanoparticles as lubricant. The main research objective was to explore the effects of fluid and nanoparticles addition on the surface contact and friction force. It was found that nanoparticles acted like ball bearings between the contact surfaces, leading to a change of sliding friction mode to rolling friction mode. Under normal loads, plastic deformation occurred at the top surface because nanoparticles were mainly supporting the normal load. By increasing the number of C4-alkane molecules between two contact surfaces, the contact condition has been changed from partial to full lubrication. In addition, an attractive force from the solid–liquid LJ interaction between C4-alkane and surfaces was observed at the early stage of sliding, due to the large space formed by wall surfaces and nanoparticles. The findings in this paper would be beneficial for understanding the frictional behavior of a simple lubricant with or without nanoparticles addition in a small confinement.

In this study, to solve the problems of shock environment and shock isolation, about which there is still a lack of reasonable description, an isokinetic shock distinguishing method (ISDM), which can quantitatively distinguish between shock and forced vibration state, is presented. And the shock isolation performance of an opposed disc springs (ODS) shock isolator with pretightening under boundary friction condition is investigated. The static and dynamic stiffness properties of the ODS shock isolator are discussed. Relying on ISDM, a shock dynamic model of the ODS shock isolator with pretightening under boundary friction condition is established. The average method is adopted to solve the model theoretically. The shock acceleration ratio (SAR), shock displacement ratio (SDR), and relative displacement ratio (RDR) of the model are calculated using the numerical method and verified by experiments. Both numerical and experimental results show that ISDM is effective. And the effects on isolation efficiency of the number of disc springs, additional supporting force, pretightening force, load, and the shock velocity constant of the ODS shock isolator are discussed, which provide guidelines for its further practical application.

The authors deal with the task of technological maintenance of operability and reliability of packaging equipment at life cycle stages, including its designing, manufacturing and operation. To improve the wear resistance of the most loaded mobile nodes of the lever-hinged gripping device of a packaging machine, a new composite material with upgraded technological and operational characteristics has been obtained, on the basis of studying the physical model of boundary friction. The paper presents the results of investigations of the plasma coating from the developed material.

Friction units for automotive and special vehicles are designed to operate under boundary friction conditions. Modern vehicles contain friction assemblies that use friction materials. Currently, friction materials are actively used: based on thermosetting resins; pulp and paper-based materials; sintered powder materials; materials of carbon or carbon composition; materials with a ceramic matrix. The development of a unified understanding of the effect of the size and chemical nature of ceramic additives on the processes occurring in a friction material during friction is very important and can be obtained both on the basis of experimental and theoretical studies. The paper presents the results of a study of the effect of submicron TiO2, Cr2O3, AlN powders with a size of 0.2-0.5 microns on the tribotechnical properties of a frictional material based on copper intended for operation under boundary friction conditions. It was found that when using the addition of Cr2O3 powder, the greatest increase in the value of the friction coefficient is noted - from 0.042 to 0.082, a slightly smaller increase in the friction coefficient is shown by the use of AlN and TiO2 defects - 0.042-0.074 and 0.042-0.060, respectively. The least wear of the friction material was obtained when using 3.0 vol. % aluminum nitride additive - 2.1 microns / km. Increasing the addition of any of the submicron powders by more than 7 vol. % leads to a significant decrease in wear resistance. This is due to the formation on the surface of the friction material of a modified layer containing ceramic particles and the metallic phase of the friction material. For the friction material, an unstable value of the friction coefficient and increased wear were recorded

Abstract To extend drain intervals and improve efficiency, new engine oils with increased dispersant concentration and reduced viscosity are required. Low viscosity engine oils can increase the prevalence of boundary friction at low temperature and increase its severity at higher temperatures. As a result, combinations of organic and inorganic friction modifiers (FM) will be used to reduce boundary friction across a range of temperatures, also preventing damage to vehicle catalysts. This paper presents an experimental case study of such a new generation of fully formulated engine lubricants with varying concentrations of polyisobutylene succinimide dispersant, organic, and inorganic FM. Representative conditions pertaining to those encountered at the top dead center reversal of the piston compression ring-cylinder liner contact are created, and the generated friction measured through use of a sliding-strip tribometry. Subsequently, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is used to determine the composition of the formed surface tribofilms in order to explain the observed frictional characteristics. The key interactions and frictional behavior of the dispersant and friction modifiers are highlighted across a range of operating temperatures.
