A large-stone asphalt mixture (LSAM) is usually used as the base course of asphalt pavement to prevent the generation of cracks. However, there are few studies on the fracture performance and crack resistance of LSAMs. Under the monotonic tensile loading mode, the overlay test (OT) was explored to investigate the influence of different test factors on the cracking resistance and fracture performance. The study results indicated that a change in temperature and aging results in a variation in fractal dimension, the fracture energy of crack growth is higher than that of crack initiation, and fracture energy is increased to a certain extent by decreased temperature, an increased loading rate or increased aging. Finally, a constitutive model is established based on the disturbed state concept (DSC), and the proposed constitutive model is consistent with the test results.

This paper investigates the triaxial compression behaviour of Q3 loess soil and the construction of a constitutive model accounting for the structural effect of loess on the basis of the disturbed state concept. By analyzing the triaxial compression testing results, we have established a new disturbing function with respect to the volumetric and shear moduli parameters. A research into the evolution laws of the disturbing function was also conducted, followed by the construction of a constitutive model for loess soil as well as the verification of the constitutive model with model test results. The results indicate that the double-parameter disturbing function evolves in an exponential form, capturing well the effect of moisture content and confining pressure on the loess structural behavior. The parameters of the constructed constitutive model based on the disturbed state are easy to be obtained and have clarified physical meanings. Considering the effectiveness in capturing the structural behavior of the loess, the constructed constitutive model has a great potential to be applied in the engineering practice in the loess area. The constructed constitutive model based on the disturbed state concept provides new ideas for the study of the structural constitutive model of loess, which is theoretically significant.

This paper presents a simple but workable constitutive model for the stress–strain relationship of sandy soil during the process of tunneling construction disturbance in coastal cities. The model was developed by linking the parameter K and internal angle φ of the Duncan–Chang model with the disturbed degree of sand, in which the effects of the initial void ratio on the strength deformation property of sands are considered using a unified disturbance function based on disturbed state concept theory. Three cases were analyzed to investigate the validity of the proposed constitutive model considering disturbance. After validation, the proposed constitutive model was further incorporated into a 3D finite element framework to predict the soil deformation caused by shield construction. It was found that the simulated results agreed well with the analytical solution, indicating that the developed numerical model with proposed constitutive relationship is capable of characterizing the mechanical properties of sand under tunneling construction disturbance.

The mechanical response characteristics of large stone asphalt mixtures (LSAMs) are key factors in studying its fatigue characteristics during cyclic loading tests. Based on disturbed state concept (DSC) and viscoelastic continuum damage model (VECD), a series of tests using an overlay test (OT) were carried out to investigate the fatigue characteristics of LSAM. The results showed that disturbance and damage increased with decreasing frequency and increasing loading displacement and aging degree, while the asphalt content had no obvious adverse effect on the increase in damage. In addition, the disturbance and damage grew rapidly in the early stage of loading and reduced in the later stage of loading. On the contrary, based on DSC, the constitutive model modified with disturbance function (D) defined by external work could describe the mechanical properties, and the evolution process of disturbance function (D) could reflect the damage change in cyclic loading tests. The research conclusion can enrich the theoretical research on the fatigue failure response and mechanism of LSAM under cyclic loading and expand the application scope of DSC in the field of pavement.
