Abstract Zinc oxide optical ceramics with hexagonal structure doped with 0.6 –5.0 wt% Yb were fabricated by uniaxial hot pressing of commercial oxide powders at 1180 °C in vacuum. The ceramics were characterized by X-ray diffraction, SEM, EDX, X-ray and optical spectroscopy. It is shown that Yb3+ ions are distributed between C-type Yb2O3 sesquioxide crystals and ZnO grain boundaries. The Yb3+ doping of ZnO ceramics enhances the near-band-edge emission of zinc oxide. ZnO:Yb optical ceramics are promising for optoelectronic applications.

Undoped and Mn-doped ZnO ceramics were theoretically and experimentally investigated using specular infrared reflection method. It was shown that infrared reflection spectra can be modeled using the parameters explored for ZnO single crystals. For ceramic samples, it was shown that ZnO grains with orientation of the C-axis along the normal to the electric field ( ) give the main contribution to IR reflection spectra. It has been ascertained that the surface roughness is manifested in these spectra mainly within the range 450…550 cm–1 giving negligible effect for the frequencies above longitudinal phonon frequency. This allowed the electrophysical parameters of ZnO crystallites to be evaluated. In the case of undoped ceramics, the obtained results were found to be consistent with the values of direct current measurements. This finding supports the utility of infrared spectroscopy for determination of the electrophysical parameters of polycrystalline ceramic materials. For Mn-doped ceramic samples, the conductivity value measured using the direct current method was found to be essentially lower than those determined from simulation of infrared reflection spectra. This phenomenon was explained by barrier formation at the grain boundaries in Mn-doped ZnO ceramics.

ZnO, as an important semiconductor material, has attracted much attention due to its excellent physical properties, which can be widely used in many fields. Notably, the defects concentration and type greatly affect the intrinsic properties of ZnO. Thus, controllable adjustment of ZnO defects is particularly important for studying its photoelectric properties. In this work, we fabricated ZnO ceramics (ZnO(C)) with different defects through spark plasma sintering (SPS) process by varying sintering temperature and using reduction environment. The experimental results indicate that the changes of color and light absorption in as-prepared ZnO originate from the different kinds of defects, i.e., oxygen vacancies (VO), interstitial zinc (Zni), and Zinc vacancies (VZn). Moreover, with the increase in calcination temperature, the concentration of oxygen defects and interstitial zinc defects in the ceramics increases gradually, and the conductivity of the ceramics is also improved. However, too many defects are harmful to the photoelectrochemical properties of the ceramics, and the appropriate oxygen defects can improve the utilization of visible light.

The sintered zinc oxide (ZnO) electro-ceramics are a brittle class of hard-to-cut materials such that shaping them with the post-finishing operations necessitates careful handling and precision machining. The conventional machining approach using the grinding and lapping processes represents limited productivity, an inability to produce the required geometries and frequent uncontrolled chipping of the edges of the final products. This study thus investigates the turning performance of dense sintered ZnO varistors and chip formations to obtain the parametric range (cutting mechanism) which causes the chipping or the trans-granular/sudden failure in these brittle materials. With the analysis of the cutting tool vibration in relation to the machining parameters (f and VC), the vibration-induced chipping correlations are made and interlinked with the occurrence of grain pull-out during the turning operation. The results show that the reflected vibratory motion of the tools is directly correlated with the chip formation mechanisms in the turning of ZnO ceramics and thus provide robust measurements for quality assurance in final products.
