A Comparative Study of Fruit Battery Voltages with Different Types of Fruits using Different Electrode Combinations

The objective of the present research on fruit batteries was to compare the voltage produced by different fruits with different electrode combinations, keeping the cathode material unchanged (copper). The electrode pairs selected for the purpose are copper-iron (Cu-Fe), copper-zinc (Cu-Zn) and copper-aluminium (Cu-Al). The fruit acted as an electrolytic medium providing continuity to complete the electrical circuit. The potential differences created by each electrode pair were measured using a multimeter. From the results obtained, it was evident that the different fruits produced different voltages. The nature of the fruit is an indisputable criterion which decides the fruit battery voltage .The most important and relevant observation was that there was an increase in the voltage with increase in reactivity (oxidizing tendency) of the anode material. This observation was found to be true for all fruit batteries which were subjected to investigation and the result obtained could easily be explained based upon the positions of electrode materials in the activity series or electrochemical series.

A competitive activity-based protein profiling platform yields cell wall synthesis inhibitors active against replicating and non-replicating Mycobacterium tuberculosis

ABSTRACTThe identification and validation of a small molecule’s targets is a major bottleneck in the discovery process for tuberculosis antibiotics. Activity-based protein profiling (ABPP) is an efficient tool for determining a small molecule’s targets within complex proteomes. However, how target inhibition relates to biological activity is often left unexplored. Here we studied the effects of 1,2,3-triazole ureas on Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). After screening ~200 compounds, we focused on two inhibitors active against both exponentially replicating and hypoxia-induced drug-tolerant Mtb that form part of a four-compound structure-activity series. The compound with negligible activity revealed potential false positive targets not addressed in other ABPP studies. Biochemistry, computational docking, and morphological analysis confirmed that active compounds preferentially inhibit serine hydrolases with cell wall and lipid metabolism functions and that disruption of the cell wall underlies biological activity. Our findings showed that ABPP identifies the targets most likely relevant to a compound’s antibacterial activity.

MOTIVASI WARGA DALAM PELAKSANAAN PROGRAM DEMPLOT URBAN FARMING DI KAWASAN KAMPUNG MARUNDA KECAMATAN CILINCING JAKARTA UTARA

Demplot urban farming program is a part of some activity series of MURIA (Marunda Urban Resilience in Action) focused on the effort to introduce urban farming to Marunda village residents in order to improve environment and economic aspect. The objectives of the study are to: 1) To analyze the motivation of Marunda village residents on demplot urban farming program implementation, 2) To identify affecting factors of the motivation of Marunda village residents on demplot urban farming program implementation. Analytical descriptive method was used as basic method. Sampling method of this study usedsimple random sampling with total respondents were 60 people residents of Marunda village who’s join on demplot urban farming program. Proportion statistical test and multiple linear regression analysis were applied for data analysis. Research results showed that Marunda vilage resident’s motivation toward implementation of demplot urban farming program reached level at 73,33%. Marunda vilage resident’s motivation was significantly affected by attitude, role of the supervisor, and availibility of infrastructures.

Direct observations of solar activity are available for the past four century, so some proxies reflecting solar activity such as 14C, 10Be and geomagnetic variations are used to reconstruct solar activity in the past. In this present paper, the authors use rectified wavelet power transform and time-averaged wavelet power spectrum to investigate long-term fluctuations of the reconstructed solar activity series. Results show obvious a quasi ~500-year cycle exists in the past solar activity. Three reconstructed solar activity series from 14C variations confirm the periodic signals.

Cartesianism and Intersubjectivity in Paranormal Activity and the Philosophy of Mind

Over the last century within the philosophy of mind, the intersubjective model of self has gained traction as a viable alternative to the oft-criticised Cartesian solipsistic paradigm. These two models are presented as incompatible inasmuch as Cartesians perceive other minds as “a problem” for the self, while intersubjectivists insist that sociality is foundational to selfhood. This essay uses the Paranormal Activity series (2007–2015) to explore this philosophical debate. It is argued that these films simultaneously evoke Cartesian premises (via found-footage camerawork), and intersubjectivity (via an ongoing narrative structure that emphasises connections between the characters, and between each film). The philosophical debates illuminate premises on which the series’ story and horror depends. Moreover, Paranormal Activity also sheds light on the theoretical debate: the series brings those two paradigms together into a coherent whole, thereby suggesting that the two models are potentially compatible. By developing a combined model, scholars working in the philosophy of mind might better account for the different aspects of self-experience these paradigms focus on.

Audience reaction movie trailers and the Paranormal Activity franchise

This article addresses the concept and growing practice of audience reaction movie trailers, specifically for films in the horror genre. Popularized by the Paranormal Activity series of films, these trailers primarily utilize green night-vision video footage of a movie theater audience reacting to the film being advertised, yet also consist of webcam recordings of screaming fans, documentary-style B-roll footage of audiences filing into preview screenings with high levels of anticipation, and close-up shots of spectator facial expressions, accompanied by no footage whatsoever from the film being advertised. In analyzing these audience-centric promotional paratexts, my aim is to reveal them as attempting to sell and legitimize the experiential, communal, and social qualities of the theatrical movie viewing experience while at the same time calling for increased fan investment in both physical and online spaces. Through the analysis of audience reaction trailers, this article hopes to both join and engender conversations about horror fan participation, the nature of anticipatory texts as manipulative, and the current state of horror gimmickry in the form of the promotional paratext.
